I love Mountainsmith's attitiude - they make what they want regardless of trends. Cool stuff!

A cool pack for a cool dog! Nothing but the best for Wanda! She did well with her chill attitude on this video.

She's so easy to film with. She just sits there and hangs out, its almost like she knows the video is about her lol! So much easier then trying to film with Remi, as he wants to lick your face, and get scratches

wanda has some lab, retriever, shepherd, and probably 15 other breeds, she's a real blender of a dog lol. I've tried a bunch of different packs, and so far the mountainsmith has been our favorite.
@davidkang66633 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video, I had the ruffwear approach and for the same reason that the pack sit high and not adjustable, I'll give the Mountainsmith K9 a try for that adjustability.
@MattyOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
The Mountainsmith pack doesn't get enough credit, mostly due to Ruffwear being sold in many popular outdoor retailers. From my experience using both, the Mountainsmith is superior in many ways, and has become our go to pack for Wanda.

Definitely better for balancing, room and adjustments. Use with my dog. No more rubbing and tilt.Thanks for the review.

the adjustability of this bag is interesting, but there are two things that do not convince me. First, the shape of the panniers. It seems that much of the weight is on the dog’s bag. Inwould have shaped them the opposite, so that the bulk of the weight stayed more on the shiulders. But I don’t know whether this is really something significant. Second, Ruffwear Approach weighs 0.8 lbs in size XS and has a capacity of 427 cubin inches, while this pack weighs 1 lbs in size S for 366 cubic inches.

I find this pack actually sits better on my pups shoulders then her ruffwear, but i can see what you mean.

Great review Matty! I just ordered my new puppy a Pup Tent from Dutchware to hang from my hammock suspension. I am hiking the Long Trail in September without my puppy, so we will try out the little tent in October. Have you seen them? Happy Hiking!
@MattyOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
Firstly, I hope you and the pup have an absolute blast on your trip! It's alwayd a special time getting out with the 4 legged companion! And I have seen the pup tents! They were on my list of gear I researched when I was looking for a solution for Wanda when it came to our trips with my hammock. I went with the Pet Palace from cave creek though. I'll be really interested to hear how it works out for you!

I wonder if the Ruffwear pack cover would work on this.
@MattyOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
Im not too sure. I looked into one when she was using the ruffwear pack, but she lays in water too much, so it wouldn't have helped me out much, I just pack liner her saddlebags
@rmoran1132 жыл бұрын
Now that you had it awhile what’s your thoughts? I just got one for my malinois for our 10 day trip in winds. Definitely going to be a challenge getting 10 days food in it….
@MattyOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
I love it. It might be a stretch getting that much food in it for sure, but its far more adjustable, and a better made pack then the ruffwear. Only advantage to ruffwear is a bit larger saddlebags
@rmoran1132 жыл бұрын
Recently switched to Inukshuk dog food. They make a high energy kibble that’s over 700kcal per cup. Think I can come close with this. It’s dense and heavy but calorie dense. Last long hike of CT couldn’t keep weight on him using the freeze dried raw and pricy as hell!
@rmoran1132 жыл бұрын
You have any issues with rubbing in armpit area with pack. My pup is getting chaffed way to much after few short 1 Mike runs with pack. You have any close up pic how much clearance you have behind front legs.
@MattyOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
I don't have any photos, no. But no part of her pack or the pack harness comes in contact with her legs at all. If you cant adjust the front straps so the pack doesnt come in contact with the legs, you might need a size larger. I'd get in touch with mountainsmith directly, they have great customer support

Did the Ruff Wear Approach wear out or is the K-9 pack better? It looks like it goes on and adjusts better.

@MattyOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
Wanda is about 55lbs, and she generally carries a 7 or 8lbs for a 4 day trip. Most of her weight is food, as her gear is pretty lightweight, and I carry the bulky stuff
