The Mouse Tower in Kruszwica is not only the most valuable monument of the city, but also an unwritten symbol. This brick, Gothic tower stands alone on Castle Hill, on the Rzępowski Peninsula. Its history dates back to the 14th century, when the defensive castle was built on the initiative of King Casimir the Great around 1350.
The castle in Kruszwica performed a key strategic function as a stronghold on the Polish-Teutonic border. After the conclusion of the Second Peace of Toruń in 1466, the castle lost its military role and began to serve mainly administrative purposes as the seat of the castellany and the starosty.
The building was built of brick on a plan similar to a rectangle, and was surrounded by a defensive wall 11 meters high. In the north-west corner there was an octagonal tower, which was an excellent observation point and the last shelter for defenders. The castle was surrounded by a moat, which was protected by an outer rampart.
Unfortunately, the castle was haunted by fires and the passage of time, which gradually led to its ruin. In 1657, the retreating Swedes destroyed the town and the castle.
In order to save the surviving fragments of the walls and the tower for future generations, efforts have been made to protect them. In 1802, restoration work was carried out, and in 1896 the tower was strengthened and adapted for sightseeing.
From that moment, every tourist visiting Kruszwica can climb to the top of Mysia Wieża, which is an excellent vantage point. From its top, there is an unforgettable view of the picturesque bays and islets of Lake Gopło, the city and the vast Kuyavian plain.
