The brain is a complex adaptive system that exists in a body, which moves around in an external world. This view is called embodied mind, and we can now measure what effects different types of movements and fitness exercises have on the brain.
Michael Mannino is currently finishing his PhD in neuroscience at the Center for Complex Systems and Brain Sciences, at Florida Atlantic University, in Boca Raton, Fl. He has a BS in astrophysics, a Masters in Philosophy, and teaches philosophy and critical thinking at Miami Dade College. Michael’s other main interests include all forms of fitness and exercise, and he has started an Instagram page called neuro_fit, focusing on what exercise and fitness do for the brain. He is saying great stuff right to start; not telling jokes or notes on all the publications he read to come up with this. Very very good. Thank you.

I love that this was actually very informative and original, and not just another offshoot of a John Ratey or Wendy Suzuki talk. Also, I love the fact that there wasn't a single plug for his products in the talk, and he kept it strictly informative. Bravo!

Michael Mannino keep up the good work dude. Can’t wait to see your work in the field. I’ll be in the PhD field for neuroscience before long myself

Michael this was a fantastic talk. Movement in the form of HITT has transformed my mind-body connection and it is incredibly compelling and fascinating to hear of the studies being undertaken today in the vital field.

Yes, this is very 'elitist' - if you have the freedom to move about. In the eighties, fighting a type pf depression from being in a 'police state', where two or three people could be arrested for gathering in a public space, I hitched around eastern Australia, used public transport and drove. I met people and enjoyed exploring the environment. Then, I was given three to five years to live, and while still well, looked for a rural region, near my family and friends that had rail-based transport for when I may no longer be able to drive. I found that place, met many people, did Taichi and could get to a cheap gym by the sea. I gardened and did a range of things - enjoyed music and dancing. From 1990, the New South Wales state government started reducing the only form of socially inclusive public transport, where older, younger, disabled, able, Indigenous and visitors from overseas etc. could be met - a regional railway with time and space to get to meet others, as I had earlier. First, they placed them in schedules useless for local travel, and with services that weren't good for long distance either. People couldn't put their car on board etc. Airflights were made cheaper from the Gold Coast. They then stopped services on the Murwillumbah line, that had brought people into the region to settle. I had to move west to live, but was still on the mainline to Brisbane, where I could see better medical specialists, family and friends, but the one service to Brisbane was at 2.46am, useless if you are unwell. Basically, rail services were sabotaged for vested interests. Now, the tracks were to be pulled up for 'rail trails' - elitist cyclists - often local councillors and local business people who wanted the railway corridor land. Perhaps it was closed for coal seam gas corporations and a pipeline to Byron Bay. Now, I don't get to the beach or gym. No-one visits an 'invalid' out west. There's no advocacy, and getting involved with transport groups, a political party and later monthly disability groups - all proved stressful - the people are parochial, infiltrated by psychopaths and some have borderline personality disorder - and kick you out of the group etc. It's against Australia's signing of the United Nations Convention for human rights for people with disabilities. People are like sheep, and can not form cohesive groups, as they are now even more segregated. We have no independent way of getting to our necessary environment and facilities. I rarely get outside - Im in constant air conditioning in an overcrowded [with diseased furniture and collections of things over the years]. My carer doesn't wake me early enough to get outside before dark. My vitamin D is extremely low, and my immune system is failing. I have multiple illnesses now. We certainly cannot live in cyberspace, but with covid-19, we can be fined $1000 for being in public - without a good reason. We talk with our doctors by phone. The only train is now cut. Queensland does not want us to cross the border - as if it were another country! It's very Orwellian, even without China's surveillance cameras. Emails are intercepted. I can't even be certain that AI is just gathering my data here. Yes, I certainly know about movement - and how this will help my survival. We are extremely neglected in our region of the Northern Rivers of NSW. I cry out to the world for support. I had attended workshops on psycho-neuro immunology. Older folk are just shut away, and die sooner from lack of movement and [social and environmental] stimulation. I escaped one police state for another much worse 50 years on. There is really little new beyond AI and Internet tech since 50 years ago. The 'middle class' [52% of NSW] have no idea of the other half. I want to move to a democratic place - but am now trapped in a small town without a way out.

Very cool, nice presentation. It does bother me this aphorism: we must percieve to move and move to percive ... Hmmm...just wandering what would be Stephen Hawking comments on all of this? Anomaly!?

perhaps he is referring specifically to movement, not just perception or awareness of the world, i.e. visual, auditory, and cognition. In order to move you must receive certain types of sensory information, process it, and then move. Look up kinesthesia and proprioception.... Lets your body know the position and speed of your muscles and joints. Essential for your body to understand where it is in space. Therefore in order to move, you must perceive... he is absolutely correct. In the typical body movement and interaction with different sensory information strengthens those connections involved in perception of movement.
