I had tears in my eyes when seeing this video. As a boy I watched news of how Chinese people going into deserts to plant trees and vegetation hoping to arrest the spread of the deserts, to preserve what was left cultivatable land and to fight back seemingly impossible against the law of nature. Millions and millions of Chinese took part and most of them never live to see their effort of today. The westerners never understand things like culture but in Chinese culture the older generations would do things for the new generation. This is incompatible with democracy where an individual's selfish interest is the most important priority. Democracy never works in China because Chinese people will sacrifice themselves just to ensure the later generations could have a better life in a better environment. The community interest is more important than individual interest. As long as the Chinese want to keep their own culture, root and history China can never turn into a selfish democracy like the west. In Chinese saying in doing a good deed one plants a tree now so that one's descendants could have shades against the sun in future. Thus Chinese are culturally taught to do things that are right even they may not be the beneficiary of their own actions.
Dayum, even desertification can be linked to democracy. Thumbs up for the creativity.

@@tonomoresorrow Because democracy is about individual rights and freedom. It is a selfish system everyone for oneself. No one in a democratic country world do thing for the benefit of the later generations in a massive scale. Can you name one country trying to halt the desert advance? let alone to turn it into a green field?

@@gunsumwong3948 Thanks for repeating it, that's exactly the kind of creativity I was giving compliment for. That is NOT what democracy is about. Sure, I am aware that some parts of the world may have a "different" definition of the term, but just because certain people think apple is bad for them, it doesn't make it a fact. I don't know where you got that idea from but you really should look up what it means yourself... You saying how democracy people don't think about future generations is like saying democratic parents don't care about their kids. Just think about it, whether from a benefit standpoint (less desert = more land for agriculture. construction, resources like sand and oil) or a detrimental standpoint (increased evaporation rate, sandstorm in cities, etc.) Getting rid of deserts is NOT easy, not to mention there are different types of deserts.. They exist because of the climate in that area so every desert is unique in that way, they continue to exist does not equate to countries not doing anything about it. Plus, think about what countries are next to these deserts, can they afford trillion and trillion of dollars dumped into fixing this problem overnight? Democracy and individualism are two different things.. and these really have little to do with desertification.. calling them out for not caring enough for the future is just complete horse shit. Really, ask in your heart, how can ANY country, be it democratic or communist, or whatever, not worry about global issue such as climate change, famine, and such? Let's be real now.
This is extremely long process to turn desert into other type of fertile land. The biomass has to decompose and fertile the land, then you have to introduce more biomass and nutrients that will then decompose and yet again increase the soil fertility. This is just the beginning of the road.
