G'day Guys and Gals,
In todays video I show you an issue that I have been having with the vehicle over the last few years. Over the last 5 years I have replaced the battery twice. To me this doesn't seem like a very good life span out of the batteries. It would be great to find a reliable battery that can achieve 5 years at least. If you have any advice or any info on the battery that you are running in your 4wd It would be great if you could drop it in the comments so we can make this a bit of a talking space about the different brands of batteries and their reliability.
My battery issues in the Isuzu Mu-x started a few months ago when I noticed the vehicle was slow to turn over. It gradually got worse and worse and I had to jump start the vehicle using my Oricom Lithium Jump Starter. I then went and purchased a 2.5amp 9 stage battery charger from Repco to see if this battery charger could recover the battery. Unfortunately the battery wasn't able to be recovered. In this video I carry out a battery replacement on the Isuzu Mu-x. After having a Century battery in one of my other 4x4 vehicles fail after only a year and a half I decided to try a different brand. The battery I fitted was a Supercharge battery with a 50 month warranty.
When fitting a new battery to your vehicle it is a good idea to perform a charge rate check. This check is done with a multimeter between the Positive and negative terminals. Once you check the voltage of the stationary battery we can start the vehicle and check the charge rate from the alternator. If the voltage at the battery rises to anywhere between 13.6v to 14.5v then the charge rate is good. If it is below this then there may be an issue which requires further diagnosis.
After fitting the supercharge battery to my Isuzu Mu-x I checked the charge rate. The charge rate was sitting right on 14v which is perfect. I did have to clean up the paint under the battery due to the old battery leaking battery acid which destroyed all the paint. I cleaned it up and used some body cavity rust preventative wax to protect the area from any further damage.
Due to the harsh off-road conditions that batteries are subject to in our 4wd's I understand that the life span of the batteries may be reduced. I would like to make this video a bit of a forum or talking space to see how the battery in your 4wd has performed to see if this short life span is normal for all batteries or if there is some batteries that are just made to last.
There are lots of different batteries available on the market -
-AGM
-Wet Cell (Flooded lead acid)
-Enhanced Flooded battery
-Calcium
-Lithium
-Lithium Iron Phosphate
-Deep Cycle
Causes of battery acid leaks as shared by repairsmith.com -
1. An Overcharged Battery
Battery overcharge is one of the more common reasons for battery leakage.
When this happens, the electrolyte in the battery boils, causing acidic steam to flow out of the vent caps. The steam pools on the surface of the battery, making the unit look like it’s sweating.
The acid then contaminates the battery’s metal parts, causing battery corrosion.
This is also one of the easiest ways for your battery terminal to turn rusty.
In more extreme cases, the gases in the battery can build up and even cause it to burst.
2. Overfilled Battery Chambers
Unless your car battery is a maintenance-free battery, it will need a distilled water refill every now and then. Unfortunately, overfilling a battery cell with this water can cause it to overflow and spill.
3. Battery Plate Expansion
Hot engine temperatures or overcharging can create excessive heat that expands your battery plates. While this rarely happens, the electrolyte solution in the battery can get pushed out, as a result, causing leaks.
