The Mukbang Psychology Simplified - Why do we watch people eat, and how does it impact us - Simplest Explanation Ever
Do you watch videos of people eating? Why are you being drawn to them? What are Mukbangs? Where did they come from? Why do millions of people watch them? Are mukbangs affecting society? Do they affect our psychology and well being? Are mukbangs bad? These are some questions that spring to your mind when thinking about this internet phenomenon.
We firstly look at what mukbangs are, and where they came from. We then look deep into the psychological reasons for people to watch them. We lastly look into the impact of mukbangs on the human mind and the human society. We then raise an important discussion to help understand where we are, and where we're heading.

It was back in 2020, peak of lockdown when I got introduced to mukbangs. I was trying to loose weight at the time and purposely use to watch it so as I feel an aversion towards high calorific foods, reminding me they are so bad for you. It was a torture to watch it while me eating only proteins and veggies 🤪 I still watch them sometimes and nice to get some recipes too:) Very nice video and explained in so much depth. I have seen any explanation around it. Hope you get lots of views and comments 👍🏽😊

Thank you for your appreciation. The lockdown angle is interesting. I am sure their viewership increased in general during and after the lockdown. And an interesting piece of research I read was the impact of the pandemic / lockdown on eating disorders! The impact is kinda obvious. But it's still interesting to get it ascertained by research.

Great video, and Excellent discussion point! I think it's interesting that not many people talk about their interest in mukbangs. I am always fascinated about the fact that my girlfriend watches them every now and again. And I've seen through other people's recommended videos that they watch. It's interesting why more people don't talk about being interested in it. Makes it all the more suspicious! As a society issue, I think it's ridiculous that people watch it, and it can't be doing people any good in an already fu***d up society. Not surprised it's related to eating disorders!

That's true. I also found it fascinating that people don't choose to talk about it. It might be because they find their draw towards mukbangs a bit out of the ordinary, and hence keep it to themselves.

About the discussion, yeah i do watch them occasionally because i am interested in the unique food that they are eating but i do not feel any emotional connection with those creators. Do they affect our society? Well yes but i would argue that every piece of media does that so yeah interesting video, enjoyed it :)

That's true. Every type of content has some sort of an impact on us all. But the addiction potential of this type of content was what made it fascinating for me. It's interesting that you don't have much of an emotional connection with the streamers. You probably fall somewhere between the entertainment and possibly a 'curiosity' category. 🙂

Living in a destitute condition with a little access to delicious food made me hook to mukbang videos. I feel like I can taste, smell and savour what they're eating. 🍜🥢

I hope you do get access to real, delicious food soon, buddy. And once you do, it'll be interesting to see if nostalgia will make you go back to mukbangs every now and again, or if you dislike watching them entirely.
