Great review! You made a good point about lots of things in this show. One interesting thing is that Animal's love for bunnies is actually something Frank Oz established during one of his last performances as Animal

One of the things I liked with how they had Animal in this is that Animal isn't a use once or twice for big loud moments. We get to spend a lot of time with the Electric Mayhem and this allows us to see Animal in more normal and chilled moments.
@falcoskywolf10 ай бұрын
Agreed. The "inner lives" format inherently gives us a deeper picture of them as individuals, and just like most people who have a loud side, Animal hits low points, quiet moments, gets sleepy or frustrated. He's not a one-trick pony even though he's often used for such situations as comic relief- this feels like a natural progression after seeing him in anger management therapy in "The Muppets."

Honestly, I am way more in the "I love this wholeheartedly" area. And I've come to a simple conclusion over the human characters and why they need the focus. And I mean it for all modern Muppet projects. The characters are very much in the same vein, in a lot of ways, to the Looney Tunes. They're off the wall, wild, often in their own little worlds, and are usually at each others throats. And they don't work as well in a more grounded setting most of the time. Especially when it's more chaotic characters like the Mayhem. So not only is a straight man of the human variety needed, it's kinda required, especially in more pathos related scenes, like with some of what Janice or Animal were involved in.

Very well put! I personally loved the "Guard Dog" role Animal takes on woth his connection to Nora. It felt like a natural exploration of his relationship to women (and family in general) A very clever way to update his jokes that havent aged as well, imo. Floyd and Teeth being the emotional backbone of the band is also quite clever. Seeing as one was the frontman originated by Henson himself and the other was, arguably, Jerry Nelson's most famous non-Sesame Street role (aside from maybe Robin, but i digress. I did feel that it petered out in the last three or so episodes, relying too much on modern pop and internet takedowns that felt less like the Muppets and more at home in a Fox sitcom. But as harsh as that sounds, I'm so glad this series got made and hope we get more interesting obscure Muppets in the spotlight. Fingers crossed for a Sweetums and Robin buddy comedy 😂

While I didn't care for the love triangle or Nora's sister, I was interested in the idea of Nora and Animal being abandoned as children. I hope we go little more into that if we get another season. Human characters have always been a mixed bag for me. They can sometimes take too much screentime from the well known and flagship characters or their side story is generic or uninteresting. It's not just in the Muppets. But also in other franchises like Transformers, Godzilla and many others.
@dfanA113 Жыл бұрын
Okay, aside from the love triangle bits, I really enjoyed Muppets Mayhem. Some of the character moments, like with the Floyd and Dr Teeth flashbacks and Matt Vogels performance in episode 3, were excellent, and sure the humans get more screen time than they deserve, but they’re not bad characters and the actors give off good performances and straight man attitudes, which is needed for comedy when dealing with chaotic characters like the Electric Mayhem. So for me, it’s a 4 out of 5 stars for me!

I really enjoyed it! I've been a Muppet fan my whole life, and I really mean that, I was born two years after the first episode was shown here in the UK, and I still insist that it's a British production! I still have my first Kermit, which is bloody massive, so big that when I got it at around 4 years old it was bigger than I was! So the lack of anything truly Muppitational for so long has been very hard. So when this came out I was a bit sceptical, but by the end of the first episode I was hooked! It just seemed right. And better still my Mum loved it too! Which is always a bonus for me as we really do like to watch these kinds of things together as a distraction from all the god-awful reality TV rubbish that's on these days. We both hope there will be more and hopefully my favourite froggy will appear at least once! My main issue with it is that I had no idea who most of the guest stars were. Imagine my relief when I saw Danny Trejo and Morgan Freeman! Otherwise, clueless. As a quick aside, several years ago, on a show called Pointless (look it up, it's a brilliant quiz show), one of the questions was about the The Mupppets poster. Now, the premise of the show is that you want to find the least obvious answer. Basically they will show the poster to 100 people prior to the show and ask how many of the characters they can name. It's then up to the contestants to find the one with the lowest score. Obviously I knew *everyone* on the poster, the trick was, who was the least likely to be known to the great British public? The film had not long come out here so I thought, "Well, everyone's going to know Walter, he's the new guy!" so I plumped for Janice, She scored 1 point. Yay! I win! Except no, because apparently no-one had seen the movie so no-one knew who Walter was and he scored zero, i.e he was Pointless! So, so close to bragging I won Pointless that episode! 🤦🤣

Another great video! really enjoyed the series overall and always glad for new Muppet content, i totally agree with you about the Easter eggs being well handled. I think the series started so strong but the story lines with the phones wasn't my favorite, I like my Muppets to be real but not to be trapped in the real world. I real liked the introduction of Penny and thought she was a interesting design. Animal has never been my favorite character and it has always bothered me that he gets more attention than the rest of the band so I'm glad that other characters had the chance to get fleshed out. I really liked the character of Moog and Nora was good for the plot, although after watching your video it made me consider why scooter wasn't in the series considering he is with the band in the Muppet movie and that he was quite a big character in Muppets now. Hopefully if we get a second series he can replace JJ as the sort of industry tech expert as i feel that's kind of the role they have scooter in now as a great PA to Kermit. Great to see the band i full action and have an album to properly listen too, here's to more Muppets in the future.

I love the Electric Mayhem but I cannot see Muppets Mayhem yet, but if it comes to DVD, I will definitely buy it! I love how Lips gets more screentime. On a different, but still Disney note: Colin, did you know in one of the drafts for The Black Cauldron, Dallben was going to be a twist villain [it's mentioned on Disney Wiki so take with pinch of salt]? It seems like something to mention in your Horned King video. Honestly glad they didn't go with it, as not only would it ruin Dallben's character, but it would make the movie even MORE polarizing to Chronicles of Prydian fans. [I personally love The Black Cauldron, though that's just my opinion.]

It is not a new concept to let Humans take focus in a muppet movie.Muppets Christmas Carol does. Muppet Treasure Island does. But those are fantasy movies playing in a fantasy world. And still, most background persons are muppets too! Since the takeover and re-release it is Muppets in Real Life. Which can work, we had it is in the original muppet movie, but then the muppets MUST be the core. Do either one or the other and it is working fine, if you do "Smurfs in Manhattan" it is a waste of a good evening just watching it.

I'm surprised they didn't make a joke saying that Pimp My Ride stole from The Electric Mayhem, because in The Muppet Movie (1979) they pimped out Fozzie's Studebaker. Then again, I imagine "pimp" is a word Disney doesn't want to be uttered on a modern Muppet project. Go figure. Old School Muppet Show was aimed for adults but was kid-friendly. I know that sounds pedantic, but there's a subtle difference between something aimed for adults yet kid-friendly versus something aimed for kids but is adult-compatible.

I pretty much agree with you. This had it’s fun moments, and my feelings for it are mostly positive. In a lot of ways it was underwhelming. I actually enjoyed Animal a lot here, but I wouldn't have objected to more crazy shenanigans from him. One thing that bugged me though was the running joke about Nora's misunderstanding the Kiss lyric. It was funny for a minute, but no one bothers to show her a lyrics sheet? No one looks up the lyrics online to show her? No Gene Simmons cameo to correct her? The joke goes nowhere and makes Nora look a bit stupid.
@ColinLooksBack Жыл бұрын
It's really funny you mention the Kiss lyric. I thought about talking about that, but I was worried it would come off as nitpicking. The problem I had with that joke was that it's what they use to introduce Nora to the audience. She's supposed to be a music expert and know this kind of thing inside and out, but she's wrong about a super-popular, well-known lyric and refuses to admit it. No matter how knowledgeable we are on a subject, we can all get something basic wrong (I am very guilty of this sometimes), so it does make her somewhat relatable, but it's not a great first impression.
@megelizabeth9492 Жыл бұрын
According to Adam Goldberg in a podcast with Tough Pigs, the whole idea for the joke was inspired by a conversation he had with his son when he was little, about how the lyrics couldn't be "party every day", because it would be impossible to rock and roll all night and then go on to party every day, but they could do it "part of every day" and use the rest for sleep.

I agree that the human characters are a necessary evil on the show. Sometimes that necessity produces great moments and interactions with the Muppets, sometimes it does not. Nora is not a bad character, so to speak, but I got sooooooo weary of her "poor me" moments. Example: in the dessert with her "for better or worse" response when Moog asks her if she's back to normal made my eyes roll. She did it again in the van on the way back. It seemed she was always needing her validation revalidated. Her sister is hilarious, I thought for a moment it was the original 'Mandy" from "Last Man Standing" but obviously they are of different ethnicities. Moog is ok, I knew I'd seen that face before and then looked him up and realized he was Teddy on Full House (Michelle's "boyfriend") as well as Tia and Tamara's brother. He seems pretty one-dimensional, though, but that's to be expected from the Muppets. JJ seems to be unnecessary, Penny threatening to shut down the label is all the adversary that the band needed and the love triangle thing with he, Nora, and Moog was just distracting and predictable. The guest stars were "fucking awesome", to quote Lips. I don't know how they convinced Morgan Freeman to dress up like Zoot but I am so glad that they did. The Muppets: Loved them. Loved the backstories. Like the creator of this video I have "known" these guys for most of my life. The Muppets are the only thing I can remember loving before even video games or Star Wars (I was born in 77). Someone once said something like the Muppets had transcended celebrity to the point where people accepted them as characters and personalities rather than mere puppets. Track 5 and 6 are my favorites, with 6 edging out the top spot between the two. However, the "finding Animal" scene from Track 3 ("Baby song?"😭😭😭) is what got me hooked and wanting to binge the rest. The dessert scene is the obvious reason for loving Track 5. 6 is my favorite because Tina Teeth may be my favorite new Muppet since Bean Bunny. Her performer nailed it, and the way Teeth cowed and hunched down around his mama was so hilarious to see. Then, of course, the story of how Teeth and Floyd met is absolutely perfect. Floyd's personality is spot on, with how he's still polite to Teeth's parents. Lips is insane. I love him, Nobu. Nothing really more needs to be said. Janice was surprisingly interesting and her big reveal to Nora about being a twin was very touching. The sadness in her voice when she said "Somewhere.." was so moving. Animal, wow, he just keeps getting better. I no longer can say "mayonnaise" without "creative" in front of it. The "baby" scene in the dessert was hilarious, too. Zoot.. wake up Zoot. Hey. Rinsing, and brushing, and flossing each day.... 5 stars, love this show!

@bizzerdman2093 Жыл бұрын
Personally, while I like the majority of things they've done with the Muppets, they still have the problem on neglecting the IP. They seem to be more focused on Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar and remakes. Star wars has had 6 Disney+ shows (with 3 more on the way) with multiple Lego specials and Marvel 8 shows with two holiday (Halloween and Christmas) specials. The Muppets are being treated by Disney, similar to Mega Man being treated by Capcom. Nice content but so far in between.
