James Raymond Jordan Sr. (July 31, 1936 - July 23, 1993) was the father of former basketball player Michael Jordan, and was the grandfather of former basketball players Jeffrey Jordan and Marcus Jordan.
Jordan was born in Wallace, North Carolina, on July 31, 1936. While attending Charity High School, he met Deloris Peoples (born September 1941). The two began dating and remained together for the next three years. Upon graduation, Jordan joined the Air Force and was stationed in San Antonio, Texas. In 1956, he transferred to a base in Virginia and married Peoples shortly thereafter. Their first child, son James Ronald "Ronnie" Jr., was born the following year. Jordan left the Air Force and got a job at a textile mill in Wallace. The Jordans had two more children: daughter Deloris, and a son, Larry.
In 1963, the Jordans left their children with Jordan's mother and moved to Brooklyn so that he could receive mechanic's training on the G.I. Bill. He studied airplane hydraulics, while Peoples found work at a bank. While living in Brooklyn, the Jordans had another child, son Michael. As crime began to increase in Brooklyn in the 1960s, the Jordans moved back to North Carolina to raise their children in a safer environment. Upon completing his 18 months' training, Jordan and his family moved to Wilmington, North Carolina. It was there that the couple's fifth child, Roslyn, was born.
A lifelong basketball fan, Jordan played a large role in inspiring his son Michael to become an athlete and traveled the United States to follow his son's career, first at the University of North Carolina and then with the Chicago Bulls.
Nonetheless, Jordan was also a very big baseball fan, having gone semi-pro himself. In his autobiography and in interviews throughout his career, son Michael recounted that it was his father's vision that he become a baseball star. Baseball was, in fact, the first sport Jordan had taught him to play. Michael recounted that this was a major factor in his decision to try baseball after his first retirement from the NBA.
On July 23, 1993, while returning home after spending the day playing golf, Jordan allegedly grew tired from being on the road so late, he pulled his Lexus over to rest about an hour into his drive. He stopped in the parking lot of a Quality Inn at the intersection of U.S. 74 and I-95 south of Lumberton, North Carolina (though some say his car was moved to the parking lot from the side of the road later). Larry Martin Demery would testify that he and Daniel Andre Green spotted the car Michael had recently purchased for him (a red Lexus SC400 with the North Carolina license plate that read "UNC0023"). Green shot Jordan to death while he slept in his car and then stole the vehicle. His body was found on August 3 in a swamp in McColl, South Carolina. As his body was in a state of extreme decomposition, Jordan was not identified until August 13 with the help of dental records provided by the family dentist; his body had previously been cremated by the coroner due to lack of storage space, but his jaw and hands were preserved for identification.
Green and Demery took other items from the car, including two NBA championship rings given to Jordan by his son. Green and Demery made several calls from Jordan's cell phone and as a result were quickly captured. After their arrest, Demery said that they had planned only to tie up their victim and that Green pulled the trigger for no reason. Both were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. The accusation was based only on Demery's testimony; Green did not testify. Defense counsel Woodberry Bowen said Demery had everything to gain by lying that Green was the shooter, and that Green's testimony put Demery closer than he earlier admitted. Jordan was buried at Rockfish AME Church in Teachey, North Carolina, on August 15, 1993.

Back in the 1990s, I was on the Eisenhower expressway driving into downtown Chicago in my 1988 White Porsche 944S to my job when all of a sudden I heard a driver next to me go “beep beep” I looked over and it was a very tall man with a golf cap on driving his white Porsche Carrera convertible with the top down. I looked over at him, he tipped his hat and smiled at me. I smiled back as I thought, wow, that guy looks like Michael Jordan. After he advanced, sure enough only 4 letters on the back of his license plate: MJ JJ. (Michael Jordan/Juanita Jordan). Just two Porsche owners saying hello to each other. Gave me a thrill to last a lifetime as I went to many a Bulls game at the United Center here in Chicago. Michael is not only a wonderfully skilled player, but seems an overall kind person. I am so sorry for what happened to his dear Father. Thank you for telling us the story, Scott.

Thanks for this video. I live in eastern NC (Greenville) and was in college when this happened. I've been an attorney for the past 23 years here, and started as a prosecutor--I say that because I got to know a couple of the prosecutors in Robeson County (where more murder cases are always filling the court calendar than any other district) who handled the Demery and Green cases. They were prosecuted under NC's felony murder statute--if someone is killed during the commission of a felony, it is first degree murder. And under the acting in concert rule, it doesn't matter who pulled the trigger--if two people were "acting in concert" to commit a crime, each individual who commits elements of an offense both commit together can be prosecuted the same. For offenses in 1993, there was still parole after 20 years for life sentences, which is why the eligibility. For offenses since 1994, life in prison carries no possibility of parole. The Supreme Court has subsequently ruled that individuals under 18 at the time of the offense cannot be automatically given life sentences, so Demery (who was 17) was resentenced (so it was not due to an error at the time but a subsequent change in law). Incidentally, as a long-time follower, it's always good to have you in NC (you were only a half hour from me when you and Adam did the Pepsi museum in New Bern).
@RickPersons
@RickPersons 10 ай бұрын
Matthewdavenport2490, obviously you are not aware that the "acting in concert rule" was waived by DA Johnson Britt who prosecuted this case. He presented evidence that Daniel Green and Daniel Green alone pulled the trigger that killed James Jordan. Larry Demery testified that he was merely an accessory after the fact. The jury subsequently found Daniel Green guilty of felony murder, however, when deciding on the sentencing they only found Green guilty of "reckless disregard of human life." They didn't believe the prosecution put on enough evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Daniel Green was the lone killer. Meaning, they didn't believe Larry Demery's testimony. Therefore, the jury verdict was unlawful. It is what Daniel Green is currently being prevented by Judge Winston Gilchrist from presenting in an evidentiary hearing. I believe if given that opportunity Green would prove not only ineffective assistance of counsel, but prosecutorial misconduct and newly found evidence all grounds for being granted a new trial.

I was actually in the gas station when the officers walked in and declared it part of a crime scene. On a family trip we pulled off the exit to get gas, After filling up the tank we went in to pay and get snacks. Next thing you know officers came inside and told everybody to evacuate. I remember my mom saying we didn't pay for our gas. The officers told her they don't care head towards the exit get in your car and leave the property. Later on we had watched the news find out what a small world it is.

I remember. It seemed unreal then and it still seems unreal today. My first time seeing a grave yard with concrete on top.

I remember when this happened and I was in shock. The Jordan family did not deserve this. So Dawson Jordan was Michael's great grandfather. Scott I do very much enjoy your videos. Stay safe.
