Watched this as an African and I felt a pierce in my heart. The documentary is beautiful, that is not a doubt. But it sheds so much information on how Africa is so rich, yet it benefits the least from all its resources. Half of this documentary is in Africa. Some of the places that had (in the past) gold e.g San Francisco are so developed right now, but all gold-rich sources in Africa are still struggling to even have power, healthcare, and education. Colonialists taught us so many things like religion, social interaction, their culture, but not good governance; and Africa is bleeding and being milked of all its minerals and resources for way less than it deserves. The South African gold mined in the 80's are probably sitting in colonial vaults right now, backing their economy. I couldn't help but feel sorry for our motherland. An informative and eye-opening film Idris.

I enjoyed this documentary about the history of gold mining, but I was disappointed that it didn't talk about the most important issue facing Ghana's gold mining industry: the damage it's doing to our water and forests. The sharp contrast between the developed countries and Ghana is a stark reminder of our corrupt leaders and how they are mismanaging our natural resources. But overall, I learned a lot from this documentary

The gold he’s wearing has been passed on for generations. If he sells all that gold, it won’t even match the amount of gold mined a day in Ghana. He’s actually a great King, and we respect him. What is interesting is that,especially on this one is, that a lot of people behave like the aliens in the story, 100% disregarding any other impression than their very own limited personal view,compelety revitalizing the aliens prejudice and speciesm that the whole story is about. To them, this scenic interpretation is simply "meat". Awesome .

Although this precious metal has brought a lot of misery over the past centuries; it's value today in manufacturing, especially in high tech applications far outweighs the harm. Modern mining techniques that were developed at a human cost over the past century have mostly eliminated the risk to the communities that depend on the mining for a source of income. It's all well and good to enjoy your electronics and EVs yet discount the efforts that it took to safely deliver an essential element in their manufacturing. If there's an issue with safety, it's with the people who oversee the mines, not the technology or the element.
@akuwiyadzeclifford5817

@@brianbenson9736 my dear brother, I disagree strongly with your assertion. Nothing 'far outweighs' the senseless waste of human lives. (I will take wild guess and say you haven't lived in war torn country). It behoves the companies who make use of these minerals to ensure that they are sourced in a humane manner that does not come at a cost to humans and the environment. With the net profits they post annually, they can ensure that conflict minerals are a thing of the past. Au contraire, it appears that multinationals prefer countries embroiled in chaos because they can get the minerals "cheaper". Even the globally touted Kimberly Process has been a massive failure in recent times (in my opinion). To dream of a world where indegenes are not slaughtered for what is underneath the soil they cultivate should not be farfetched. (I continue to dream)❤️.

Amidst all the concerns people have raised about this documentary, I wish you all could see how the foreign nations that had gold discoveries were able to negotiate and manage their resources adequately, and as well get the sites back to nature (as in the case of New Zealand). For how long will Africans stop blaming foreigners for their calamities. Imagine what Ghana is still celebrating in this modern world while the communities and nation at large are being ravaged by poverty. The people who came to open your eyes with their innovative ideas didn’t do bad, instead you didn’t and wouldn’t still put yourselves in order. This same thing is as applicable to every other natural resource that is found in Africa. Stop the blame and take responsibility. If you feel your government has sold your national assets, develop yourself and know what it takes to get into government to change the narrative. My thoughts though

@@six-gunThat’s not a fair way to judge the Asante Kingdom because Asantes don’t even live on the coast, and didn’t have first contact with the European slave traders. The blame should be on those tribes that were on the coast that allowed slavery to grow. Asantes did what they needed to do for survival. They either sell others or be sold. Infact, Asantes are the only tribe that opposed and fought against the European slave traders. The other tribes united with the British to fight Asantes.

I wonder how Gold trade has prospered the UK so much than African countries and communities like Tarkwa in Ghana where Gold and other mineral like manganese has been mined for over a 100years. Can you do a documentary on this subject as well please.

It is pretty simple. The UK offered the chief of each tribe the support of each ruler with munitions in exchange for a deed to the mines as well as a cut of the profits. No one said no worldwide 100 years ago.

@ebenezerlawsonasamoah9067, the culture is what I love. Plus, this is an African nation. Once we were rich, now because Nkrumah wanted a united Africa we had to try and help others out (the Asante region is the second richest region in Ghana. The poorest region in the one north from us. Funnily enough, they used to be quite rich too). Should've given us our independence by your logic. It would've been better considering the industrial output of the Asante region

As we speak, the spot price of a Troy ounce of gold reaches all time highs in Japanese Yen, Korean Won, British Pound, Kiwi Dollar, Aussie Dollar, the Euro. The Swiss Franc and the world reserve currency, US Dollar, are also inching to all time lows against gold in these times of global economic turmoil and war. Very nice docu, Idris made a wonderful guide.

As a decendant of gold miners I was very excited when you discussed returning the gold mine back to nature. Right then, I knew my hope of seeing home was about to show on screen. Thank you for connecting Aotearoa New Zealand, Reefton to this epic on gold and its significance. We must always however remember, to return to nature, Nature is the Gold we need to thrive, no person can survive on Gold alone. Imagine a day where a fertile farm is much more valuable than this metal? I can.

My oldest maternal uncle was originally a self taught uranium miner. He patented the first under water shotgun for sharks & loved the oceans & Earth. He established a sea turtle preserve in Belize many years ago. He became the chief environmental engineer of Fluor. He worked with mining & power plant construction worldwide. He also held patents on gold extraction & mining processes. We have a picture of him holding an enourmous block of gold weighing 80 pounds. He is straining while grinning ear to ear. We still extract gold & diamonds from several sources using a variety of techniques. It's thrilling & fun.

So lost in your own naivety… This wasn’t a beautiful documentary… he was nothing more than a con job created by the people who mine gold to con the universe into believing that they’re harmless… Most of these countries have profoundly corrupt governments and a few individuals get to pocket millions of dollars… while the average person is too uneducated and powerless to do anything to stop their countries from being stripped/destroyed… unable to stop enormous companies stealing their resources and leaving them high and dry… It’s criminal… yet rampant… and pure evil. … it’s nothing more than a con job… this doco is primarily created to make the mining companies look like good samaritans… while they steal billions of dollars worth of gold while decimating these beautiful countries and pretending to give a little bit back by spraying the bugs every now and then with toxic chemicals… one … colossal… con job… and Idris has sold his soul. This is nothing more than the marketing department in the production company selecting somebody who is idolise throughout the world to present the show… but more sinister a tactic… he’s somebody who detracts the attention of naive people who think “oh… it’s Idris Alba… one of us … he’s part Ghanaian… he couldn’t possibly be part of a scheme to con us out of our natural resources “…

Enjoyed it very much... especially the African piece. It seemed to mean the most... like it's part of them. Regarding the Iranian jeweler that rappers use... I always found it weird they'd spend that money outside of their community... makes little sense to me. Also, the gold chain thing is a reference to Mr. T who stated he wore as an expression/homage to the enslaved ancestors who hard and brutal metal chains by colonizers and enslavers. I believe this is why they, rappers, wore the chains... now... it means nothing to them.

The connections to tech, health, environment, and wealth around the world is inspirational. It inspires all to even buy gold!
