Can we discuss/ take a moment to appreciate Poirot referring to himself as ‘Papa Poirot’ in the earlier novels? Also, I really saw this book as Agatha Christie trying to distance Poirot and his methods from Sherlock Holmes

Glad to have found your channel and this series. I read most/all? of Agatha Christie in my teens but have never went back to them, and at the time I read them purely as the mystery books they are, but it's so interesting to hear you talk more about the background and the times they were written in and in such an intelligent way. Next time I'm at the library I'm going to pick up one to see if they still can hold my interest. Looking forward to it, and to following the rest of your chats.

I started reading again after getting more time from all the school work and decided to delve back into the Hercule Poirot series. Thanks for this really awesome perspective of the book! Loved the historical aspect as it really adds to the foundation of the book and the time period it is written from. I will definitely continue to watch your videos parallel to my reading of the books.

A very enjoyable read. I’m pretty new to Christie and I loved the French setting and the characterisations of the various French officials/law officers. It was a fun twist on the more common English setting. @bookslikewhoa, thanks for your analysis of the strong female leads, it really deepened my appreciation of that aspect of the mystery. I found Hastings more frustrating then usual, but on the flipside, it deepened my appreciation for Poirot’s tolerance and made both characters more human. If I have one complaint about this book it was that for a book with golf (links) in the title it didn’t include enough golfing motifs! 😂

Just read this and really appreciate your insight into the history of the time. That actually heightens my enjoyment of this read as I was coming into it originally without an indepth understanding of the time period.

This was my first Agatha's book 23-24 years ago and I got hooked. This remained my all time favourite book. I don't think it is the best one, but I have so much soft spot and given that my Agatha's love started from it, it just needs to remain on Number 1 spot. I cannot judge if I haven't read it first where I would put it, but definitely one of my most favourites.

Thank you! This is also one of my favorites and I hate that no-one gives it any love! Though my first Agatha Christie book was "Murder on the Orient Express," the complexity of the plot here is unbelievable. It's like a mystery within a mystery! Mystery inception! lol Plus, it's the first time Hastings meets Cinderella, whom I absolutely adored!

Some great insights there, especially the stuff about how the French have been historically perceived by the English and how the French Revolution ties into it. However, I have to disagree with you on one point: I thought Hastings was a complete idiot in this one. I couldn't understand how Poirot managed to put up with him!

Hastings was noticeably dumber than in Styles. “Poirot, I had the strangest dream. You accused so and so…” Just dumb.
