"Ladies, from now on you'll never see one of those men without the other three." I like the idea that, upon singing together, any group of four composed of a bass, a bari, a tenor, and a lead would immediatly become inseperable.
@guibox3 Жыл бұрын
That is definitely the mentality of a good quartet man. The guys I sang with in highschool, college and later on in community quartets...we were ALWAYS looking for a chance and opportunity to ring some chords.

@@elfmirfkin1 I know it's been 6 years lol but just popping in to say completely agree. It's extremely straining not just on the voice but on the abdominal muscles to sustain a note that high without switching to falsetto. I respect anyone that can sing like this man. I'm also a bass but I tend to really enjoy harmonizing in a low register too, but I was tenor 1 in my high school years

My dad wrote these arrangements. These guys were the best amateur barbershop quartet, and told him they could only sing their own arrangements. He said if they didn't like his they didn't have to use it. The rest is history...

Award winning SPEBSQSA (Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America) barbershop quartet The Buffalo Bills is the group in the film, following their appearance in the Broadway show for a year. The tenor was Vern Reed, who, along with lead Al Shea, were the two quartet members during its 1947-67 lifetime. The almost hysterically long SPEBSQSA name and acronym has been shortened to the Barbershop Harmony Society. Originally formed for men's quartets, it now has women & other than quartets as members.

I will always regard Robert Preston's work as superb--a special gift and self presentation all his own. But not only that. I met him in 1974 and he had the same charm then as well.He was so gracious to me, a fun person and I wouldn't trade that experience. I will always be grateful for this.

Let's all be perfectly truthful here if you heard this out in the street you would not just walk away saying "Man those guys are nuts." You would sit there and listen to this harmony and wish you could sing like that, that's the beauty of the old days of movie and music. Timeless classics and viewtiful (even better than beautiful) music combined into a century, I may not have been even been born for another few decades but I still can appreciate this sheer beauty. Can you?

Barbershop..... the beginning stages of group harmony. Without Barbershop there would never have been a Rhythm Boys, Boswell Sisters, Mills Brothers, Merry Macs, Four Hits & A Miss, Modernaires, or Pied Pipers or a few years later, Skyliners, Platters, Crewcuts, or Four Freshmen. A Important detail that should be remembered.

One thing which gives a barbershop quartet such an amazing sound is a little part of musical theory called "just intonation". Because the human voice is more flexible tone-wise than almost any musical instrument (e.g the piano can only play 12 discrete tones per octave, while the voice can bend one continuous note across more than two octaves), a good quartet can produce purer harmonies than any piano. Most instruments have to compromise intonation, but the well-trained voice does not.
