If we're talking about randomly generated music, I'd like to mention "a mind is born", a commodore 64 demo of only 256 bytes. Despite this absolutely tiny size it generates a very catchy tune. The seed value of the generator was chosen carefully so the randomly generated tune sounds pleasing to human ears. This all from a program that's shorter than this comment.
@GSTChannelVEVO2 жыл бұрын
That's an extremely cool C64 demo but there's one really important distinction between that and crazy bus: the generator and its seed value were very carefully chosen

Don't forget what might be the first use of this sound in popular music, that being the intro and outro of "Mexican Radio" by Wall of Voodoo. That was done on an Oberheim OB-X8. From an interview: "The voltage-controlled amplifiers on the Oberheim were very unreliable - they hadn’t sorted out some of the voltage problems. But it was just the effect we were looking for.”

Thought you were going to dive into the history of non-tonal music and composers who avoid the 12 tone scale in this video for a second. An overview of modular synths was pretty cool too though .

So... hm, is the white noise aspect the reason why if you play multiple instances of the Crazybus intro at the same time, it eventually cancels out into a silence that you can kind of feel in your teeth?
@GSTChannelVEVO2 жыл бұрын
No, the reason that happens is that the most popular upload of Crazy Bus's music actually contains a DC offset, meaning that playing multiple instances will just choke out the sound instead of turning it into a mess of clipped distortion

@@GSTChannelVEVO i might be crazy here, but i can hear these little passages in the randomness that span 3 notes sometimes. the song is also always the same from start-up, so i reckon this merits deeper musical analysis!!

Shame you did not find my analysis of the Crazybus music before making your video; it’s not as simple as to be recreated with only oscillators and sample & hold. It is more interesting than that!
@GSTChannelVEVO Жыл бұрын
yeah true, lol I think I found your video shortly after I posted this one. it's really good! this one's extremely tongue-in-cheek, but I stand by it, or at least the part that says "crazy bus isn't some musical anomaly" :P

Wait, so is it seeded randomness or true randomness? If I were to rip this game's soundtrack multiple different times, would each one have a completely different melody
@GSTChannelVEVO5 ай бұрын
iirc, Crazy Bus used badly seeded randomness. so it's technically different each time, but incredibly easy to get the same seed since the console startup conditions are the same each time. I think if you press the reset button, you'll get a new seed.(?) it's been a while since I've looked into it though... 😅

And because it's random every time, you can't just rip the soundtrack for other mediums, the only way to hear it new every time is on the mega drive, truly ahead of their time. Kraftwerk wished they could put this on their next album but couldn't, they have been outdone.
@Bestmann3n2 жыл бұрын
what's the source of randomness on the megadrive? it for sure isn't true randomness.
