This episode is basically the Deep Purple family episode :-) : Jimmy Bain, Sarzo, Bob Daisley, JLT, Bonnet, Doogie, Romero, Hughes... BTW, the 2 drummers in Mother's Army are Carmine Appice and Aynsley Dunbar. Great show!

And yes he seems to be a truly nice guy. I sent him an email in regards to his book about his time with Randy Rhoads and he sent me a personal response. Others I think of are Jeff Pilson and Jason Bonham.

I grew my hair from the age of 12 to 21 and then fancied a change. I went to my hairdresser with my seriously long hair and unwisely said he could use his judgement as to the style. He decided that a pageboy look was what I needed. Wrong. So I then instructed him to give me a skinhead 'number one' cut. Looking at the mountain of hair on the floor I decided it would be a shame to waste it. So I took it home, put it in a Jiffy bag and mailed it to my ex headmaster at school. He'd broken my balls for 5 years about my hair so I thought he'd appreciate it.

Saw Wild Horses at St Andrews Uni Union think on their first tour in 78. Those guys had bottles and pint glasses of the hard stuff on the amps, which was consumed! Good gig, remember Brian with his ciggy stuck into the guitar head between drags, looked very cool! We always thought they would make it big and it was exciting as both Brian and Jimmy were Scottish, but it seemed to take forever to get an album out and there was so much interesting new wave sounds coming out in early 80’s to compete with.

I am Pete’s age (a year older) and I can still grow a huge head of hair (I’ve kept it short for years though). During the shutdowns when I couldn’t get a haircut, I went about four months without a haircut and it was kind of fun to grow it out again. But at the end of the day, it’s a pain in the ass to manage and I have a job where long hair is not really appropriate so short hair it is…

The word "great" should be an exclusive tag, but in today's culture, it is thrown around with alarming frequency in sports, music, television, and movies. Two of the individuals (e.g., Doogie White and Joe Lynn Turner) mentioned in this Hired Guns episode have, IMO, been provided with the rare double whammy of being underrated vocalists and criticized for not being in the class of the all-time rock vocalists. White and Turner, however, are clearly very good vocalists and they have occasionally put their big toe in the greatness pool. Prime examples are White's vocal performance in Cornerstone's Human Stain and Turner's vocal performance in YM's Rising Force.

The number one person I thought of during the last episode was Rudy Sarzo! I think Ronnie Romero has spread himself too thinly. And I do not appreciate that he has taken over for all living Rainbow vocalists (Doogie White and Graham Bonnet with Michael Schenker and Joe Lynn Turner in Sunstorm). I would’ve loved to see Michael Schenker ride into the sunset with Michael Schenker Fest, or a regular variation between the four vocalists in that project (White, Bonnet, Robin McAuley and Gary Barden). You would think three bands - Rainbow, Lords of Black and Vandenberg - all bands where I think he deserves a place, would be enough for a guy! I can appreciate his vocals and I think that he’s a good fit with Rainbow, and I get that Ritchie wanted someone young fresh. The problem in Rainbow seems to be that the band isn’t very tight or heavy, the recordings I’ve heard sound quite thin. I also thought of Doogie White during the last episode. He’s not in Tank anymore, ZP Theart (from Dragonforce, later went to Skid Row) took over for Doogie, but David Readman (who took over for Doogie in Pink Cream 69!) is Tank’s current vocalist. I saw an interview with Doogie and there doesn’t seem to be any concrete plans for another album with Schenker, but they might do one sometime in the future. Doogie’s also been doing various Rainbow/Deep Purple cover bands, Demon’s Eye like Pete mentioned, and the one band I’ve seen him live with - the Norwegian Purple/Rainbow/Whitesnake cover band Come Taste The Band, which he also did an album with (Glenn Hughes, Graham Bonnet, Bernie Marsden and Joe Lynn Turner has also done tours or shows with them). That band is sadly over now. The last project he was on was the Frontiers project Long Shadows Dawn (I saw an interview with Mitch Lafon, I believe, where Doogie said that it took a long time before Frontiers and him saw eye to eye and were able to do a project together, but he was still not happy with the promotion and music video for this project). Graham Bonnet, Joe Lynn Turner and Glenn Hughes are also good picks - loving the Rainbow/Purple/Schenker-related talk! Other guys I thought of: Don Airey - the ultimate hired gun on keyboards? Rainbow, Michael Schenker Group, Phenomena, Ozzy, Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Brian May, Gary Moore, his own band and guest appearances. Russel Allen, from Symphony X and then he’s just done a lot of supergroups and pompous power metal-y projects. But he’s a good vocalist. And then there are the bassists: Neil Murray (Black Sabbath, Brian May, Queen + Paul Rodgers, Gary Moore, Phenomena), Tony Franklin (a lot of projects with notable hard rock musicians - most recently Joel Hoekstra’s 13) and Marco Mendoza (Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy, The Dead Daisies, Bill Ward). Also, Bobby Rondinelli. Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Doro, Quiet Riot, Blue Öyster Cult and Axel Rudi Pell. Vinny Appice, with Back Sabbath, Dio, a handful of supergroups and projects with famous musicians. And to a lesser extent Carmine Appice. And Cozy Powell. Maybe you mentioned some of these in the first episode, I don’t remember anymore! 😄

@@JIF882 I would seriously doubt it,buddy. I heard that when Ozzy first listened to Tony Iommi playing the riff to Iron Man he said something like,"that sounds like an iron bloke walking" or something like that and then Geezer took it from there, but that's not enough for me to say Ozzy wrote that. You see,i don't actually hate Ozzy, he's his own person,it's just that I firmly believe in giving credit where credit is due. Would you not consider all session players hired guns? Leeland Sklar (bass) and Leon Russell (vocalist).

Leland has a great YT channel. He's played on more albums than most people have heard.

Vocals - JSS, Goran Edman, Jorn Lande, Ripper Owens, basically anybody who has worked with Yngwie honestly.... Dino Jelusick is the new breed but I hope he can really establish one band that he leads for many many years...

I kind of disagree with characterizing some of these guys as hired guns. It's all arguable, just depending on your definition of hired guns. I think of hired guns as the kind of solid players that bands pick up to fill a need for an album or tour and then they move on to someone else. Rudy Sarzo vs. Jimmy Bain is the perfect example. Rudy filled in for a bunch of bands, but Jimmy was in a bunch of bands, but was he ever really a fill in guy? I think the deciding factor is that a hired gun joins an existing band. Super groups and one album Frontiers projects aren't the same thing. Or, I guess, you could argue that every one album Frontiers project is nothing but hired guns.

I interpreted this as well travelled musicians who have been in a lot of different bands and projects as opposed to ones you associate with one or two particular bands.
