She's not wrong. "I beg your pardon" in the US usually gets whipped out by someone in your parents' or grandparents' generation and almost always is an indicator you just said something that offended them.

As an American saying "what?" Is definately considered rude in certain situations instead of pardon though saying "sorry"or "excuse me" were the alternatives. That was definitely ingrained!
