Just came across your channel and thanks for this review. I’m intentionally diving into Gothic literature origins so, of course, Radcliffe is on my list. Recently finished Castle of Otranto (a fast read!) and found it quite fun. I’m a slow reader compared to how quickly I read forty years ago, but since I now have more time on my hands, I guess it’s fine, eh? LOL I look forward to watching more of your reviews.

This was a great review. I agree that the characterization is very uninspired, and the pacing is quite tedious. When I first read it I thought it was pretty mediocre, but it's a book I frequently find myself thinking about. I remember it now as a lush, immersive read. Some of those descriptive passages are stunning.

The Mysteries of Udolpho is on my Classics I Might Read In 2022 List, I was glad to see it in your Fresh Read Kills segment! I appreciated your review. I agree with your comment on Austen, it sounds like a loving parody to me. I think oftentimes parodying something is a way of paying homage to it. (Granted, i haven’t read Northanger Abbey OR The Mysteries... 😂)
