You don't need a repair invoice, but at least a stat deck from the person who repaired it stateing that they repaired the damage (itemised) to the best of their ability. Stat deck must include vin number etc. You also need the original receipts for parts with vin number of donor car if used part(wreckers should do this anyway). Need original receipt from where ever the last owner bought it from included with your purchase receipt from where ever you bought it. wouldn't be hard at all to get back on the road if you can contact the last owner.

Speaking of regretting selling a car. I spent a year building my Evo back in 2013 and then got laid off from my job in 2014 and I had to sell it, I missed it every single day since. So last year I got the chance to buy it back from the friend I sold it to. He only put 14k miles on it in the 6 years he owned it. I paid cash for it this time around so it's not going anywhere this time! 😁

I live in North Queensland and I had a prang in my 94 NC2 Fairlane, it was raining I was on a 4 lane street with centre parking and a Land Cruiser turned from the outside lane to the centre parking space right in front of me and smashed the left front of my car. He tried to blame it on me so I got the cops involved and he ended up paying a fine and my insurance claim, I was able to buy my car back for $200. My car was sent to the panel shop and they wrote it off saying that the chassis was bent (which it wasn't all the damage was above the bumper and in front of the shock tower). I went to get photos of the damage and I noticed the panel shop had a NA Fairlane with right front damage, then I realised they wrote my car off to use for parts, I got it out of there as soon as I could. My Uncle learned from his neighbour who was a retired panel beater, I bought another Fairlane for parts and a year later my Uncle, my dad and I were able to repair the car in about 10 hours by replacing the radiator support and the sheet metal in front of the shock tower (measuring diagonally across the engine bay it differs by almost 2mm). We repainted it all and got roadworthy inspection and passed, the hardest part was getting it taken off the write off list, the inspector asked a lot of questions and had a bit of attitude and you can't watch while he was looking over it, but I was able to register my car again.

Nope that is not how wovr inspections work . The person inspecting the car in Queensland is not some mechanical guru or even a person trained to look at repairs or safety . They are simply looking at the receipts and the car to make sure it looks repaired and that the parts are not from a stolen car, you don’t leave any panels or anything off for the inspection you get a roadworthy certificate first then you drive it to the inspection station they take a quick look at it go through the receipts and ether tell you all good issue it inspected and passed or decline it and tell you the reason. Only time I’ve ever been told to go away and come back was on a tesla he wouldn’t pass it until the Takata airbag was changed as he could see it was on the effected vin list.

Back in my misspent youth. I worked in an auto body repair shop, which specialized in buying wrecked salvage cars and getting them back on the street. They would buy two of the same make, model, and year, with damage to different areas of the cars. We could drill out the factory spot welds and end up with enough undamaged parts to put one back together. They went back together pretty quickly because the robot done spot welds would be in the sam place on both bodies. So, all we had to do was weld the holes we had drilled shut. While the engine and transmission were out of the car, we would paint the completed body. We could strip them down and put them back together in two 24-hour shifts.

Purchased the car 7 and spent 10k and time and effort, probably arguments with family/missus and only sold it for 9 for a loss of 8k and all the time and effort. My guess is something happened to the person between the time span of fixing the car and registering it, or buying and fixing this car was a mistake that ruined that man’s life as he couldn’t get his money back or register it. Some people don’t got 9k spare. I’m lucky to save 100 dollars a week, that would set me back 2 years of savings. That is so freaking awesome! I had a similar experience with a 85 300ZX I bought. It popped up on FB MP for $700 bucks and was in pretty sorry shape and the lady said it didn't run. I went out there and was able to jump it and get it running, just a dead battery. The title wasn't in the persons name and I said if she could get the persons signature I'd pay what she was asking. When I went back to pick it up the signature was obviously forged and I talked her down to $300. I ended up searching the dudes name on the title and found him on FB and seen photos of the car on his profile! I sent him a message to see if I could mail him the documents for transferring the title to me and he was completely down for it! So in all I had a registered and driving 85 300ZX for $300 bucks! The interior was pretty torn up but ran and drove great after some service! It had the digital dash and would talk to ya! Loved that car, it is missed!

Seeing as you'll be modifying it anyway, could you buy aftermarket parts and use those receipts to register it? Then sell the OEM parts to help cover the cost

Not likely they need receipts to match the parts listed on the report on the written off vehicle register. Mostly body panels, windscreen, new airbag, possibly radiator support, front bumper reinforments stuff you generally don't modify.

The reason the repairer tried to sell it to the original owner, is that a WOV can be reregistered without any receipts if you owned the car for 28 days before the right off. The rule is there for people who own collectable vehicles . The dodgy repairer found he could not register if himself so tried this loop hole. The original owner would probably have succeeded in getting registration. I bet the parts for this car repair came from stolen cars.

Buy another wrecked BRZ to "take the parts off" to fix your car. The paperwork will explain where all the parts came from. Even if you have to pay another $4000, you will double the value of the car. Paid $15000 for the white car and parts car, to have the white car be worth $30000

Owned it for a few years, bigger turbo and whatnot, was awesome. Years after I sold it one of the owners after tried to register it as it was unregistered at one stage... And it couldn't be done for some reason, even though it was rego'd in nsw for ages. 🤷🏻‍♂️. I hit a roo in that as well lol.

And that's exactly the reason for these laws preventing registration. Lots of people here giving tips on how to bypass the rules without any regard as to why the rule is there in the first place. If you buy stolen vehicles or vehicle parts, you are directly supporting the thieves. Always make sure the used parts you are buying have a believable backstory, even if it's just going on the track.

When I lived in QLD I had to do a similar process with a 4x4 Pagero. Sadly, I forget the details of what needed to be done, but I remember being shocked at how easy it actually was, considering how much legal red tape there is around it. I took it in for the inspection, filled in all the papers, payed the fees, and registered it. Jobs a good one. It seems that a formal Statutory Declaration might help you out in this case and is far more legal than fudging the documents, although both might actually work. I now live in the very strict country of Austria and the Statutory Declaration (Erklärung) trick even works here. I was able to register a motorcycle which was missing some documents simply by writing up an official declaration. Worst case scenario is that this car becomes a track-only car which does not need to use street-legal mods. That would still be a cool build for your channel and you could build some exhaust bits in-house to make this car MAD.
