If you have been on the ride Hex at Alton Towers, you may have heard a version of this story. Well it turns out it is partly true, and there is an Oak Tree behind the park that has been covered in chains for centuries.

Hi - local author who has written much about this tree (both fact and fiction). My research didn’t turn up anything more than yours, other than the tree is likely 1200-1300 years old, and the chains were forged around mid eighteen hundreds. I wrote a piece for the local paper on why it may have been chained - my non supernatural theory is that Oak trees are notorious for making a moaning sound, akin to an uncomfortable groan, when large branches move in the wind. Could be that the placement of this tree (high in the valley, and not surrounded by larger trees to shield it) made quite the racket - so much so either the villagers complained or the Earl had had enough! Not exciting, but plausible. Thanks for documenting the tree!
@Coastsandcoasters
@Coastsandcoasters 25 күн бұрын
Forgot to add - rope wasn’t used because it would stretch and still allow movement. (Perhaps!)

Thanks for the extra info. Yes your theory could well be more plausible. Can't believe how little info there is on this.

The large bough had a large split in it for years before it fell. It was massively heavy and as it was chased to other branches it took a lage part of the tre with it. I've got photos of it a month before it happened. It was a very impressive tree before that. Unfortunately the chains caused a lot of damaged in the end.

Hey up Darren chain has been used to tie tree's together for a long time these days cable bracing is most common, it's done usually when a stem or stems have bad union to main trunk, nice video

Darren, I hate to say but this vid made me think of the famous tree that some "person" cut down just to do it, the tree was in the 1991movie Robin Hood --- Prince of Thieves, I think it was called the Sycamore Gap tree ???? Very enjoyable watch with GREAT drone work.

When the tree suffered a branch broken off a few years ago, I took a piece home with me. I had nothing but bad luck for the time I kept it. Eventually, I burned the piece on a barbecue. Oddly, it burned very quickly with a very orange flame. My life and health returned to normal after I disposed of the large splintered piece.

The chains where likely to support the branches in order prevent it from collapsing as ancient oak trees where/are considered statement trees. Hence the stairs as well. On the ‘old’ internet the Alton Towers formes used to refuse to give it’s location out, 12 year old me spent hours trying to find out where it was haha. 😅
