The Mysterious Origins of Beltane

Though the word "Beltane" wasn't first referenced until the 900s AD, spring festivals with flowers, dancing, and fertility rites go far back into ancient times. We have records at least as far back as 2000-3000 years ago of strikingly similar celebrations from ancient Rome, Egypt, Persia, China, and others. This in-depth study of the holiday explores possible connections between ancient, medieval, and modern Beltane practices.

My ancestors were Brythonic and they spoke old Cymraeg / Welsh from Scotland to Cornwall. In the language of the time, ‘Bell’ or Pell’ (the double l is pronounced from the side of the mouth) means ‘far away’. .Tân, (with a long ‘a’) means ‘fire’. Easy really , Belltân,The Far Away Fire….🔥My father would also threaten me with a ‘peltan’ (smack) if I’d misbehaved ,but this was the 60’s …..
