Did you know that the old capitals of Bulgaria were more advanced for their time than a number of cities in Europe, including #paris? Foreigners looked at them with admiration and called them the stone cities of the Bulgarians. How they're built and why they're so admired, you'll find out in today's #theclashers video!
You know that in my travel series I like to show you places of interest and this episode is a bit longer than usual. You can get #food and sit down with #friends to watch it in one sitting. I guarantee that you will like the views of Pliska and Preslav.
Today, the journey takes us back to the year 681, when Bulgaria was recognized as a state by Byzantium. Asparuh founded Pliska, our first capital, about which every Bulgarian has read at least a little. It is located near the city of Shumen and today there is a National Historical and Archaeological Reserve that you can visit and explore. The place is refined, the roads are good and there is parking.
For two centuries from 681 to 893, this place here was #culture and #economy, but also mostly the political center of the newly created state. Few people know that Pliska is among the most impressive monuments of urban planning at that time in all of Europe. Its area is 23 square kilometers and since we took Paris as an example, around the year 900 the French capital is only 2 square kilometers. That is why Pliska is considered a symbol of medieval town planning.
Here the area is significantly more hilly and again the principle of outer and inner city is followed, but this time everything was compacted in an area of 5 square km. Preslav was intended to house the elite of Bulgarian society. Although smaller, larger palaces, public buildings and squares were built here. Defense was again needed and we can see the remains of the 10 meter high walls that defended the heart of the city. According to John the Exarch, the city was an architectural and artistic masterpiece. Sewage and water supply were built again, which was rare for the cities of that time. Perhaps it was also the #finance center of the state! Watch the full video!
I hope the Mysterious STONE CITIES of the Bulgarians - Mysteries of Bulgaria ep. 07 to like it! ❤️ Enjoy watching!
