La Mer, a luxury skincare brand adored by celebrities like Britney Spears, J.Lo, and Dwayne Johnson, has an intriguing and mysterious origin story. Dr. Max Huber, an aerospace physicist, rumoured to have worked with NASA, supposedly suffered severe chemical burns in the 1950s, prompting him to create his Miracle Broth. After 12 years of research and over 6,000 experiments, he developed Crème de la Mer, using fermented sea kelp and other ingredients. Huber's unconventional methods, including using sound waves and light pulses, reportedly enhanced the broth's potency.
Estee Lauder acquired La Mer in 1995, maintaining its mystique and luxury status despite controversies and high prices. Critics question the cream's value, with some comparing it to more affordable alternatives like Nivea. Despite this, La Mer's commitment to its unique process and high-quality ingredients continues to attract a devoted following.
But some people to this day question the validity behind this origins story. Did Dr Max Huber ever exist? Are the stories of his experiments just a drawn out c;ever PR stunt by Estee Lauder? Maybe even to justify the high prices?

@@adish1401that's a funny analogy to bring up to me because I'm sort of a freak of nature who can keep his eyes open in basically any body of water (except chlorinated saltwater pools - my kryptonite) without any discomfort or signs of irritation after, but my eyes sting like a bitch and get red if I get a little bit of my very gentle moisturizer in them! i guess my eyes just prefer overly concentrated chlorine water over a gentle substance with no actives

The next day, i woke up looking glowy. I had a very sensitive skin to begin with. I was using the Nivea or Pond's night cream that whole time. It's good yet a bit sticky on the face. But the facial cream they left on me that night was super rich and a bit light in texture compared to Nivea. It's sooo good. I had to ask them what was it. I came in that fancy bougy hotel with zero expectation that they're gonna change my mind to spend my money on those pricey things. But it's actually WORTH IT 😍. I still use the Nivea one tho. But i also bought the La Mer one and often go to a local clinical spa to have them slathered on my face😂 it's a bit weird. During my Vietnam vacation with my friends in November, we went to Sapa. My skin felt tight and super dry at night. Just La Mer, it helped alot during the trip. TOTALLY WORTH IT. Highly recommend.💕

I've never used La Mer, but years ago I fell on the fire door and seriously burnt my upper leg. I was on intravenous antibiotics as it started getting infected. It was bad, and after it healed the scarring was severe. But my sister gave me a little bottle of oil, made from seaweed, kelp, algae etc and I used it day and night until it ran out and I have no scarring at all. Only when it's really cold, it shows up faintly. But I was so impressed with the product. It was labeled for aging /dry skin., from a health shop,. So I definitely believe in seaweed, algae etc and what they do for the skin. I have products that contain these ingredients, and they don't cost anywhere near the la mer prices and in my opinion, they have much better formulas also. 🐙

@@sadmermaid no I can't remember. But it was something like marine oil or similar. Said it was for aging or dry skin. The ingredients were all seaweed kelp and algae etc, no fillers or other ingredients. I guess it had been extracted or fermented down to a potent little oil. But try a health food store as that's where she bought it from. It really was incredible. Burns are definitely nasty. I hope your dad makes a full recovery. And I hope you find the marine oil. 🙏🐙🐳

@@DeadKraken I've used the Heimish marine eye cream for years, and use it on my face too, since it's 30ml., the marine care cream toner is also nice but has a scent. So I stopped using it. The Purito hydra wave deep sea serum is awesome, and full of good ingredients from the sea. But I look for the ingredient called Laminaria Japonica Extract, which is the seaweed, kelp. It's in a lot of my products. Also look for red and brown algae. If you want, you can type those names into the "inci decoder", they bring up all sorts of products containing those ingredients. It's a really good way to find things that aren't advertised etc. But have been around for a long time. Korean and Japanese skincare has the best, but I've noticed it being used in western products now too., like Kora organics, Tailor skin and others. 🐳😊

This isn't cosmetic chemistry. It's physics. And I'm sceptical but we don't know enough about molecular physics to say the light and sound exposure doesn't change anything in the fermentation process, especially since they are dealing with live cultures. I'm curious to see some studies where they take a look at the cultures under microscope when exposed to different stimuli and if there's any affects on a molecular level.

I’m no longer an eye tech so as a well-meaning stranger… to anyone who’s deliberating, please don’t put stuff in your eyes thinking it’ll “fix” your vision (or at all, if not prescribed by an optometrist/ophthalmologist). Refractive error is not disease or injury (though it can be caused by both) and a home-brewed skin cream isn’t going to affect the curvature or thickness of your cornea, but there are non-zero odds such a thing would cause irritation to your conjunctiva and eyelids. It’s not worth it. Take care of your eyes, you only get two that work if you’re lucky- not only is there no functional replacement for the human eye, but most times when vision is lost, it’s permanent.

I’ve been using La Mer for several years. I can confidently report that the main reason to use it is anti-inflammation - if your skin is red or irritated, if you’re recovering from a cosmetic procedure, etc. It speeds up my recovery noticeably, and takes down my face’s redness to the point where I can tell when a selfie was taken based on how red my face is or isn’t. But it might not work that way for everyone. I tell people to try getting some free samples and taking before-and-after photos to see whether it works for them.

It also managed to get rid of my flaky skin one winter, tried every cream and oil I had, La Mer was the only products that got rid of the dryness/flakiness. There's a lot of German scientists with fuzzy immigration paperwork, perhaps some records missing from their Paperclip. Depending, it may even explain why NASA wasn't putting his name on their records. Although I'd bet that claim is more myth build-up or him letting stars make assumptions for marketing reasons.

I'm 61 years old and have great skin. It's always been very clear and I'm practically wrinkle-free. I have never used expensive products of any kind. Simple soap and water for my face, and plain white face lotions. I also like to use a rosewater & glycerin spray which is not at all expensive. As I've gotten older, I've added some drugstore-priced serums to add more moisturizing properties as I get drier with age. All of this is to say that it's more down to things like genetics, sun protection, hydration, and a regular routine, than it has to do with an expensive cream. However, I defend your right to buy whatever you like. Obviously it makes you happy, and you have good results, so that's fine. But I also have good results doing something much lower-end. So to anyone bothering to read this, just take care of your skin the best you can. Don't drink, don't smoke, stay out of the sun, and get plenty of rest and water. That will do a lot for your skin.

To La Mer’s credit, I am a 42 year old male who shaves every day since in my 20s because of my military service. I would break out heavily all the time and that sucks cause I shave every day because of my job. None of the aftershaves I’ve used worked. I was still breaking out Fast forward, I tried La Mer’s new treatment lotion at the time around 2014 maybe? And overnight I swear till now that I don’t break out after a shave. When I don’t use it, I would break out the next day so I tested it myself and for me, La Mer is worth it! I use a lot of their products and swear by it!

I used to work at the Saks Fifth Avenue call center back in the late 90s. We would get free products when a promotion ran, and one was a jar of LaMer. I was suffering from very bad hand eczema, my hands were red and peeling and itchy. LaMer calmed the itching and redness, and my hands started to look and feel much better. I can't afford it but years of using fragrance free drugstore lotion brands ended the eczema so luckily I don't need to waste hundreds of dollars on it. Whatever the questionable beginning, it worked wonders for me, and I'm one that side eyes these types of products.

Such a wild ride! I’ll admit I’ve tried La Mer several times out of pure curiosity and I genuinely wanted to dislike it. as somebody who has extremely sensitive, eczema prone skin who has tried everything to help it I felt like there was no way this could help. Great deep dive!! I knew the crazy production theory but you went so much deeper in that part of the story and gave so much info that I didn’t know! I got a free sample of creme de le mer so I can say I have tried it 🤣🤣. My limited ability to review the product from that sample, I can say it didn’t the texture wasn’t impressive and my one use didn’t make much of an impression. My skin felt moisturized but not in any memorable way. Obviously I didn’t have enough for a fair review but, for the price, I would have hoped that it would have felt nice enough to at least wish I could afford it!

Funny how the founder of Augustinus Bader tells the same story about the origin of their products. Remember that the cosmetics industry is not regulated in the US and the brands can make up any story they like. Your video is great but people need to learn about the ingredients in their products and not fall for well written stories about very expensive products. In my well educated opinion! D

I don’t have La Mer money, but a few years ago Sephora had sets with pretty nice deluxe samples of luxury products for $25 each. There 4 different ones and I managed to buy 3 of them. They did have different products, but all 3 had the original Créme de la Mer. I used all of one sample and hated it. I have normal skin that is sometimes a little oily in my T-zone. It was greasy when applied, but my skin would be dry the next morning. I gave the other 2 samples to my mother. She didn’t like it either. Maybe Estée Lauder did ruin it. I also received 2 samples of SK-II treatment essence. Now that is a luxury product I wish I could afford.

I’ve actually been thinking about Le Mer lately, and this video has put me off buying it (not that I would spend anywhere near that much on a skin cream!). I understand why people think the existence of the scientist may be a marketing ploy (and I’m not big on conspiracy theories). The whole playing music and psychic thing is madness, and the justification for the price tag is unbelievable. Surely there’s no way they’d actually go to that much trouble to make a face cream?! It all sounds like a fairytale to me.
