Hello there! I'd like to give some information about the demo from the available knowledge. "We actually don't know if demo was shown off publicly". It was shown off publicly at the Sega booth. Two images are seen of it playing there, albeit one in terrible quality. The demo was indeed a self-running demo, confirmed by those images and an interview of Ohshima (an artist of Sonic 1, and creator of Sonic). A controller is seen connected to the megadrive playing it, but it's assumed it didn't do anything. The red Japanese text is generally believed to read "DEBUT APPROACHING", but it can also read "DEBUT IS NEAR". Thankfully the new screenshots discovered a few weeks ago showed this wasn't placed there by a magazine (although leads to new questions of how it showed up or displayed). That enemy seen in a few screenshots is unnamed, but does have a singular sketch from the "Nightmare world" plot. It's programming might've been very unfinished, and it may have not even had collision due to first time encountering it jumps over Sonic, and second time Sonic jumps over it. This is further followed by that Ohshima interview which said a single enemy wasn't finished. The clouds do constantly scroll, yes. At a very fast speed too. Quick history: in twitter, Oshima actually confirmed that the demo was was public, and was also a plan for Sonic Mega Collection™. But, due to losing the code, they never got to see the demo. and that's now lost. maybe we can all ask for a remaster for the demo.

Trust me, I've been playing sonic 1 since childhood, and I still consider a great title. If you do play it, I would suggest emulating it though, as it's a fairly unforgiving game at times.

I heard that in the demo version of sonic 1, he runs twice as fast, and he constantly stops at walls (and other objects), making the game unplayable since his speed is very hard to control.

Don't know about the double speed, but you might be confusing this with a prototype of Sonic 2, where Sonic stops and rebounds and falls off every wall.
