Matthew brings up a lot of valid points about Richard and the princes in the tower. Most people just want to condem Richard without facts or doing research.

There's a saying, " when you hear hoofbeats, don think of zebras". In other words, think of the most likely scenario. Motive, opportunity, benefit. It doesn't look too good for Richard.

Perhaps it was a similar situation to what happened with Henry II where his rant was mistaken for a direct order which resulted in the murder of the Archbishop Thomas Beckett, but in Richards case it would have been the two princes. It would make sense actually, and it would give him enough reason to try to brush it under the rug too, given that it was his duty to protect the boys. Plus I'm sure that Richard was well aware of what happened to Henry II after his words were taken out of context and how his reputation was damaged and even his own family started to turn on him.

I wonder if information can be mined from household accounts of the tower during the time the princes were known to be there? People did very little of their own upkeep in those days, including needing help to get dressed and undressed. There were no flush toilets, so chamber pots had to be emptied. There are records of the princes having a confessor. Can a trail of expenses or visits to the tower be found that ends at or around a certain date? Can a pattern be seen in servants who were dismissed or perhaps transferred north to Richard's castles? It seems the impostors tended to claim to be Richard. Was there tacit knowledge that Edward V had died? One thing I find curious is that it was said Richard grew up in Elizabeth Woodville's household and that they were a close family, yet the impostors never seemed to use such memories to support their claims. Thus the information about Perkin Warbeck is very interesting. Does that coincide with Henry VII perhaps confining Elizabeth Woodville to a convent? Or alternately, her choice to withdraw to a convent?

If my sons’ murderer became my son-in-law and king I do think I would retire to a convent too!

Over 1000 people worked in the tower. I think that, had the boys been murdered and buried within the Tower grounds, someone would have noticed.

Ok but skeletal remains were found the fit the boys ages. How many kids were killed in the tower

According to the modern forensic anthropologists who examined the 1930’s photographs, one of the skeletons was female. Both appeared to be far older than the 15th century, probably a foundation sacrifice.

The tower exists in a way or other since roman times, so there is plenty of opportunities for corpses to pile up

The skeletons were found way under a stone staircase buried around 10 feet deep. The staircase was built at the end of the 11th century. They were found when the stairs were being moved. It’s highly unlikely that anyone could have dug that far under the massive stone.

I have never believed Richard had his nephews murdered. It’s just totally unnecessary and out of character. I have no problem believing Perkin Warbeck was young Richard. However, I find it much harder to accept that Lambert Simnel was EdwardIV. First, I always read that he was a child of about 7. I also think that if he had believed Lambert to be Edward, he would have had him killed like he did Warbeck. I would love it if you could explain it to me. I’ve been studying this since my teens. I’m in my 70’s now. Daughter of Time got me hooked on Medieval studies in the first place. I got my BA, MPhil, and DPhil in the Middle Ages but my focus was much earlier.

Richard had his nephew murderd they would be a thorn in his side. If they grow up to be men or escape from the towers get there own solder challenging Richard for the kingdom he stolen from then.

Sounds like you really enjoyed the food best. Too bad the helicopter trip turned into such sn expensive experience. Ever since covid restaursnts and hotels hzve tried everthing to generate revenue. My lsst trip to Las Vegas, no free parking even at the timeshare, extra taxes on food which I think you could refuse to pay if you knew to do so. Almost all hotels there charge a daily resort fee which is $25:and up. The business class travel looked worth the expense for the long flight. Thanks for sharing your costs.
