Hedda Hopper went on to be one of the most famous legendary, vicious, nasty gossip columnists in Hollywood history. She dissed stars and may have ruined many careers with her nasty insinuations about various Hollywood stars. She had 35 millions daily readers when people actually read newspapers. She could also benefit a rising star with a favorable write-up. If you got on her bad side she would respond in her column with unfavorable reviews of your latest movie or with nasty insinuations about your private life. Although Hedda starred or co-starred in many films she never made it as an A list movie actress. So it seems logical that she would become a gossip columnist as she was well connected with the grease that oiled the Hollywood machinery as she had appeared in so many films. She knew where the bodies were buried. Being a gossip columnist also allowed Hedda to exact revenge on an industry that seemed to write her off as an actress. And then she became one of the most powerful gossip columnists of the business...How is that for revenge?

$250,000. In 1931 would be equal in buying power to approx. 5 Million in 2023 according to today's inflation rate ...say about 3% over 92 years? The figure is rounded off. A dollar in 1931would be equal in buying power to twenty in 2023. These older films just had everything! The model work was great and editing too! Well done from casting, script and Directing to desing ang ang and filming.

Diane Vitale He died of pneumonia in his '50s in 1970. He went into semi-retirement after Perry Mason ended on TV in 1966.

Thanks for the upload, PizzaFlix! I love the "mid-Atlantic accent" of the actresses even though I know no one spoke that way. I adore the fashions of the time. Those were real (for the wealthy). Gorgeous riding togs. Beautiful georgette dresses. Stunning combination underwear. I want to go shopping in these movie wardrobes. What a great sauce!

This was later remade in 1934 as a much better feature known as "Murder in a Private Car". It drags alot less and the railroad scenes are way better.

Hedda Hopper is buried in Altoona, PA, about a 25-minute drive from where I grew up. I found her gravesite last year on a trip back home and got some photos. There is even a sign in the graveyard pointing to where her site is located.

Since 'cheating techniques' were not there, it seems those days they had to have a good story, and good creative photographers, and director. It is all there in this movie. Don't miss the end part - quite thrilling the photography of the trains......If you think about it, you will see there are intricate 'ethical' undercurrents and questions in this 'flick'. In the hands of Dallas and Coronation Street producers, this little film would have filled a season! PizzaFlix! Here goes my thanks again! What a relief from the artificiality and stupid theatrical graphics-stunts, and emotions of the many many modern movies in HiDef!!!

This Was a bit involved plot& action seemed to drag some.Only actor I knew was Hedda Hopper& this is the third film I've seen her in so far.Thanks,PizzaFliz4 showing this movie.The actor who played the male lead,Nick Stuart? reminded me of Montgomery Clift to a degree,resemblance- wise in appearance.

An enjoyable pre-code film. I'm not sure that a detached railway car would have travelled that far the braking system should have stopped it but as i'm not a railway engineer i will give them the benefit of the doubt. Thanks for posting.

If the air hose is disconnected, the braking system would be useless. With regard to coasting any distance, that would depend on passenger weight, speed, curves, and degree of grade. It would be a parallel to a car in neutral coasting to a stop eventually.

Going canoeing in a three-piece suit. What a time. At that time, almost all the women and men actors were so svelte. In another film of the epoch I recently saw, one of the male characters was described as 6-foot tall at 160 lbs and the others in the film had a similar physique. In police films back then, a women searched by the police was regularly described as 5-foot 4 at 110 lbs. A curious thing, what happened to the Black porter? He was on the list of the survivors or the deceased. I also wonder if that train sequence was filmed on the old railway that went from San Diego to Arizona by way of Mexico. There are documentaries of it in YT.

" Well, it was the time of Jim Crow and racism was an ingrained thing in the national consciousness. Black guy was comedy foil to diminish the race and discourage taking what black people said seriously, like civil rights (30 years to go on that) and so on.
