Rishi Sunak says his parents put him into drama lessons so he could learn to 'speak properly' 'without an accent', avoid racism at school and fit in. As a linguist, I have some thoughts...

6:06 If in my village almost everyone wears a blue outfit, then I would say the person wearing a red outfit is wearing an outfit that actually has color, whereas most people are wearing a colorless outfit. Although my blue outfit would have color were I to wear in some other village. That's why we say some people don't have an accent. Put Rishi in Edinburgh/Dublin/Sydney and all of a sudden he will have an accent.
