@5tale_5kittle53 ай бұрын
I’m pretty sure what he meant by impractical was that it was not only tedious but also difficult to manufacture in-house. So much so that he required outside help. And needing to find someone else with the proper equipment to do so certainly wasn’t free. And outsourcing on a small scale isn’t cheap. Paying someone to provide their services greatly effects the bottom line and profit margins. He’d have to either buy the expensive machines or continue to pay someone else to do it. Either option means less money made for each ball produced or him charging more for each ball which means less money in your pocket and also less people purchasing it due to its higher cost and goes back to less money for him at the end of the day yah know lol

I work with both an Industrial Waterjet (a 2015 Flow Mach 1000) and an Industrial Laser Cutter (a 2002 Trumpf TRUmatic L2530). They're equally as accurate, but waterjets severely struggle with super soft materials, such as leather. They make up for this by being able to cut things that lasers can't, such as composites, ceramics, quartzite and granite, and have a much easier time cutting glass. However, the laser is much better for quickly changing your cutting beam diameter, and can process thin materials stupidly quick.

WAIT! YOU LITERALLY MADE SPHERE INTO A 2 DIMENSIONAL SHAPE! You could probably try to create the first correct world map!!!
@pizzlerot27303 ай бұрын
Not really, since the final 2D surface still needed to be stretched into a sphere by inflation. It's literally impossible to turn a sphere into a truly representative 2D surface (at least given the physical laws of our universe), because there will always be a third dimension of curvature on any section of a sphere no matter how small, and that simply can't exist in 2 dimensions. Truly "flat" sections of a sphere must be infinitesimally small, meaning there is an infinite number of them; and since this is a single piece, then you'd end up with an infinitely long, infinitesimally wide map - not terribly practical 😂 In other words, even using this pattern to map the Earth onto a 2D surface would still produce loads of scale compression in some areas. It's just the nature of geometry.

@Foefii Basically, this way of constructing a sphere only works because the material can stretch. If it were entirely static and non stretching, you could not induce the curvature along multiple axis needed for it to become a sphere.

If you had peeled an orange in one peel you would have already understood this concept! 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤠🤠

Did you know, the internal organ HEART is also one-panel? You could use this knowledge on the naming.

This is awesome I was just thinking about this sort of thing from one of your other videos. I’m behind the curve. Awesome work!

We used to practice peeling oranges that way. Peel the entire skin in one piece. I don't recall the peel matching your shape, but when you've got no other entertainment...
@MDuarte-vp7bm4 ай бұрын
You don't have to follow any specific pattern to do that. I do it just to keep the peel in 1 piece so it's easy to clean up.

And then if you're careful you can put the peel back together again into a hollow orange.

I would want one of those 1 Panel Balls to put it as decoration in my room.. Maybe thats not what its supposed to be but the spiral shape on it is very beautiful and satisfying to see ❤

You should make a brand out of this, they are elegant vintage style balls and I think people would buy it, even for sitting on your office as decoration, like me!

This may not be very "useful" or "practical for actual ball production, but I am quite curios on the implications of this method applied to mapping, specifically UV mapping for blender. I also love the idea of being able to make an incredibly accurate flat map of the globe using that pattern where all land masses are at their accurate scale.

Waterjet cutters can certainly be quite accurate, around the same as a laser cutter. The problem with this cut was that they use quite a bit of force and so when cutting soft materials they can push the material around a bit during cutting, losing accuracy. For rigid materials this isnt an issue

0:27 The first try you did when you attached the panels together and were opening and closing the ball in your hands, my immediate first thought was how much that looks like a large version of when my dog rips up his tennis ball.😂
