I always saw the relationship between Artemis and Selene and Apollo and Helios as something more akin to Hades and Thanatos. Hades is not the god of death but he is the god of the dead, he has a sort of bureaucratic control over hades the same way the twins drive their respective chariots but are not the sun or moon themselves.
@CrownofMischief3 жыл бұрын
There's a lot more examples, like Ouranos being the sky but Zeus being the king of the heavens. However I feel like it's also a bit of a succession story, with Apollo and Artemis inheriting the duties, much like how Poseidon took over the domain of the titan Oceanus while Pontus is the personification of the sea
@3ll3llyyy2 жыл бұрын
this is a year old but I've always loved this. Helios and Selene to me are personifications of the sun and moon. obviously when they're personified the sun and moon are still up (like how earth is still there even if Gea is personified) where Apollo and Artemis pull the chariots that move them
@xRosiesandPosiesx2 жыл бұрын
Same here
@sonofcronos7831 Жыл бұрын
Is not the same trough. All gods have their own chariots (Zeus pulled by winged horses, Poseidon by the hipocampi, Dionisius by panters, etc), the chariot of Artemis is pulled by deers, while Apollo is probably winged horses. But the idea that they pull the sun and moon dont make sense. The Sun temperature comes from the chariot itself, while his light comes from the crown that Helios is using (i am taking this from Metamorphoses). So Helios is the sun god because of his crown and chariot. This mean that the sun is inseparable from Helios, and he itself cross the skies, and this same applies to Selene, her chariot is the moon, and her horns and crown is the phrases of the moon. However, Helios and Selene were not that well know, so the most important Apollo and Artemis normally were the ones pulling the chariot instead. But we have to remember that the greeks and romans did not believe the sun and moon to be two "balls" outside earth in space. The sun and the moon were just a lith high in the sky, but not thousands of kilometers away. So Apollo and Artemis is the sun and moon, or is Helios and Selene, but it cannot be both, is not how that works.
@sonofcronos7831 Жыл бұрын
@@CrownofMischief is all different. Ouranos was the sky yes, but he was defeated and Cronus literaly rule his own father body if you think about, Zeus then took the sky. Zeus was not the sky, but he ruled it because the sky was literaly incapable of doing anything else. Poseidon never took the role of Oceanus, a lot of people mistake it because they believe Oceanus to be the salty Ocean, but Oceanus was a fresh water river that encircled the world, and was the source of all rivers. So Poseidon and Oceanos have different domains, and in the Iliad is stated that Oceanus only obeys Zeus, so Poseidon has funny enough, no relation to the Ocean (only later the word Ocean was applied to the open seas when the greeks discovered there was no such things as a ocean river). And Apollo and Artemis never took the offices of Helios and Selene, this is made up by Percy Jackson. Helios and Selene were the sun and moon, or it is Apollo and Artemis, but not both in the same "universe". Actually, Apollo was already a god of ton of sh1t (music, medicine, arts, reason, archery, plagues, prophecy), so why he would took the office of Helios? Would just be more work from him. His relation to the sun is because he is the god of day, not because he is day itself, but because he presided over the prophecies delivered during the day, thus the association with the sun. But in both greek and roman mythology, Helios the son of Hyperion was definitily seen as the guy thst pulled the sun chariot.

I think I know why Demeter appears as old in the games, and it's related to the myth about Persephone being taken away by Hades. In the story, before Demeter learns where her daughter had gone (usually from Helios, which is why I find it interesting that the dialogue in game has her deny what he saw), she goes on a journey while disguised as an old woman at the same time as she made the seasons stop at winter. This myth has Demeter become a nanny for a baby, partly because she was missing her daughter. She then attempts to make this child immortal/stronger than normal by holding him over a magical fire, which she did for months on end, but before she could finish the process, the baby's mother walks in and freaks out, angering Demeter, who reveals herself. She then tells the mother that she had been making her child powerful, and although the process wasn't finished, he would be strong enough to be a great hero. She then stops what she was doing, usually because someone cues her in (usually a young farmhand boy or cattle herder, who because of their help, Demeter makes them a minor deity), that she should ask Helios what happened because they thought they saw something strange.

Something that's pretty well hidden, so I'm not surprised wasn't mentioned in the Dusa section, is that if you summon Dusa while you have Athena's Greater Call active Dusa freaks out because Athena was the one who made her into a Gorgon in a lot of the myths.

It's also worth mentioning about Orpheus and Eurydice that Supergiant may actually have addressed the fact that their Orpheus performed with Eurydice while the mythological Orpheus did not. There is a line of dialogue where Eurydice complains about how all the credit has been given to Orpheus to music they produced as a team. Orpheus responds in turn that he has tried to correct people on this point but that the narrative of Orpheus as a singular performer has gotten out of his hands. Not only does this address the original myth, but it's some neat commentary on the way some things get revised away out of myth by the people retelling it, especially the role of women.

I know they're side characters but so was Patroclus and the fact that they were set aside and sidelined to fit their romantic narrative of Patroclus and Achilles and ignore the fact that Achilles is definitely and poly is downright dishonest. The idea that Artemis helps with childbirth might have something to do with the birth of her and Apollo. When their mother Leto finally could give birth, Artemis was born first. She immediately started to help her mother with the birth of her twin brother.
@GuiSmith Жыл бұрын
The fun ridiculous origin of that is probably because these two weren’t always twins. It’s very possible Artemis was originally meant to serve as how Hera discovered Zeus’s affair with Leto, and when round two happened and Leto fled, _that’s_ when the dangerous birth on Delos would’ve happened. Or, you know, logic doesn’t always apply to mythology. Artemis and Apollo still weren’t originally twins as far as we know, though.

I always pictured Thanatos with a scythe. In one of my german childhood books from Dimiter Inkiow about Greek mythology there also is a chapter about Sisyphus. As for his look, there is also a description given. ,,A black skeleton with red flaming eyes who has a silver scythe and a black bag that he caches souls with” And what is hilarious is the way Thanatos is captured by Sisyphus (especially if you read the scene while picturing Than the way he is in Hades game). As it is a story written by children it goes along these lines: ,,Death, also known as Thanatos appeared before Sisyphus and expected, that he would faint and his soul would be secured in his bag. But the king laughed and asked him if he had tasted ouzo, a alcoholic beverage, during his lifetime. Thanatos denied and three servants there told to bring it to them. They promptly fainted at the sight of Death, but the bottles were secured by the thick carpet. Sisyphus and Death drank a lot, then the latter curled up and fell asleep. Sisyphus tied him up and stuffed a cotton ball inside his mouth, lastly having him pushed under his bed.”

One detail I really hope they incorporate in Hades 2 is that when Melinoe defeats Chronos for the first few times is Chronos setting back time, giving a lore justification for sending Melinoe back to the start. But each time he does it, he gets weaker due to him taxing himself more for each defeat to finally be defeated for good after feeling that he’s simply delaying the inevitable, after failing to defeat Melinoe even using all of his strength. I remember as a young man, reading an article deconstructing Arthurian legend: Merlin’s sword Caliburn(the sword in the stone) and the Lady of the Lake’s sword Excalibur were both Celtic swords stolen from their final resting places by Arthur. The legends possibly derived from the celtic sword Claíomh Solais. The article went on to explain the Arthurian legend began as a Welsh tale built upon and romanticized over time by english authors and poets in the years after it was adopted by the english. The article stated, when a Celtic chief gave up their sword for whatever reason it was tradition to toss the sword into a body of water, conversely when they died in battle their compatriots would strike the fallen Celt's sword blade first into a cairn. As the ancient Celts were slightly better sword smiths than their anglo saxon counterparts, people believed the swords to possess magical properties and sought them out.

The "make peace with death" line in the phrase for the Gilgamesh aspect is not referring to the death of Enkidu. At least, not directly. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Enkidu's death gave Gilgamesh a fear of his own mortality, so he set off to find an herb that would make him immortal. He ultimately did find it, but it was stolen from him, and only after that did he come to peace with the fact that he would one day die, which is the conclusion and final moral of the story. As it would happen, he then went on to become one of the three judges of the Underworld for that mythology, an idea that later became adopted into Greek myth with Minos.

The bit about Demeter's parentage being changed to avoid implications of incest is interesting. I definitely understand why they did it, and it's probably for the best in the case of Hades and Persephone. I will point out that despite Supergiant's efforts it's just so hard to get anywhere without running into some godly incest. They may have accidentally created that kind of implication when it comes to Zagreus and Thanatos. After all, Nyx acted as Zagreus' surrogate mother while Persephone was absent. Meaning in a certain way Zagreus and Thanatos grew up as half siblings, even though they aren't actually blood related. I definitely can't hold it against them though, it just comes with the territory. I'm curious if in Hades 2 they might just have to have some dialogue akin to "gods just be like that sometimes". Especially if Hera appears for instance.

an interesting thing about Charon, in Byzantine times in Greece he had evolved into a mix of Thanatos and the medieval Grim Reaper, he spoke little to the people he'd take the souls of but he also had a weapon. For example in a poem, a legendary hero called Akritas, the strongest Byzantine soldier, refused to let Charon take him to the Underworld on his fated day (despite Greeks becoming Christian, Hades and the Underworld very much remained as the afterlife in Greek collective conscience, even today) and challenged him to a fight. But Charon's weapon and power is too much for even the strongest man, so Akritas dies in the duel and gets dragged to the Underworld as just another shade.

Chaos isn't stating how it was born, it's musing on how it "understood" the universe when it was born. (keeping in mind that it wasn't sure if it was born with, or the universe was born because of) Since Chaos has no reference to what was there before, it's knowledge of that moment lacks perspective and it's telling you that it could be X or Y or something else totally.
@sonofcronos7831 Жыл бұрын
In the most well know greek mythology, Chaos is literaly emptness, this is why he birthed Erebus and Nyx, who are not real if you think about, since they are just darkness and the "abscence of light" just like Chaos, who is nothing. In orphism however is stated that Chaos is a "creation" of Chronos (not the Titan god Cronus, but the Primordial of Time), and Ananke (Destiny). He was born alongside Aether/Acmon (the Soul and Celestial Fire). And from Chronos, Aether and Chaos sprang Phanes, the Primordial of Life and Creation, who them bringed order out of Chaos and created the world, including Gaia, Ouranos, Pontos, Tartarus, Nyx, Erebus and Hemera (Ovid actually gives a very interisting creation of the world and he speaks of Phanes indirectly in his first chapter). But Chaos represents more emptiness than the "confusion of matter".

In the really old mythology, in the Greece the Helenistic Greece called "Ancient Greece" Posidon was the big guy in the Pantheon as he was both the god of the sea and Earthquakes with horses to a Lesser degree of importance. The sea was important because trying to navigate Greece over land before modern roads was an ordeal. Earthquakes are pretty self explanatory in how terrifying they can be. I'm really not sure how Zeus ended up taking so much of the power in the pantheon, maybe his cult got a bunch of political pull at some point? The Aspect of Zeus shield is actually a reference to a fling that Zeus had before he had married Hera. The mortal's name was Metis, and in some mythology she even assisted in the start of the Titanomachy. Near the end, Gaea then curses Zeus with the patricide that had occured with Ouranos and Kronos. He then has a relationship with Metis where she ends up pregnant. Later on, he also teaches her to shapeshift. Knowing of Gaea's curse, he persuades Metis to shapeshift into a small bird of sorts to let her know the joy of flight. While she is enamored with the experience, Zeus turns into a large hawk and swallows Metis whole. None the wiser, Zeus then weds Hera and officially begins the Pantheon 2.0. While this is happening, Metis gives birth while being part of Zeus's being and raises her child, where she ends up perishing. An undisclosed amount of time has passed, where Zeus then is racked with an immobilizing migraine where he has Hephaistos split his skull to relieve him of the pain. The child then springs out of his head fully armored, weaponed, and aged. This is the conception of Pallas Athena. EDIT:probably very contrived, but it definitely seems to be a reference to his very first woman and technically his first child. Another thing to gather is that Gaea's curse had never actually lifted and what with all the gods not really liking each other, Athena was seen in the mythology to be a favorite of Zeus, as he saw her as the most dangerous of his offspring. Which is why she is seen as an advisor of sorts to the Pantheon as a whole in most media and seen as a sort of warden or keystone to the Olympean 'family' as a whole.

I actually think Demeter's depiction as an old woman is also symbolic of the passing of seasons. Since the only seasonal aspect we see of her in game is winter, she is depicted as old an close to dying, which is an apt depiction of the death and withering of plant life in winter. They might have also taken other inspirations of old women winter incarnations, like Frau Holle.

Late to the party but one thing I'll add to Thanatos' section - regarding the butterfly. Like the scythe, this is not actually based on ancient greece, but butterflies are actually associated with Death in japanese culture - supposedly, butterflies would usually swarm battlefields after the fighting was over, drawn to the fresh blood on the corpses. Other insects associated with death by the japanese include centipedes, which are indicative of stagnation, rot, decay, and death. given the other uses of butterflies in game, as mentioned in the video, the ancient greek "soul" association of the butterfly is probably the actual inspiration, but I think the cross-cultural convergence of themes/meanings is interesting :D

For those who don’t know, the Hospitalers were a religious order from the island of Malta, who were basically crusaders specializing in medicine and healing. This connection makes a lot of sense if Zag was a healer or life god in some capacity. I’m unable to find the original Greek version of the fragment, so I can’t verify if the translation of Hospitaler is correct or not. But if it is the association with a healing knight would line up pretty well with a life or blood god. Bit of a rant, I know but that connection stood out to me as something worth more than a passing mention.

On the same page with the minotaur; Deadalus, the craftsman who makes the cow-like thingy so the queen can get wild with the bull was tasked with building the labyrinth where the minotaur is imprisoned and where he and his son, Icarus (yes, thet one), were to be kept captive, in a tower, but he tried to make wind out of wax and, well, you know how it end for Icarus

"...But we'll ignore that, for the sake of making my argument look better." I might quote that.

This is a fantastic video. Seriously. I've been watching this off and on for, like, 2 days, now. It really helps fill the spaces, which is something that DEFINITELY helps with my depression.

One thing that I personally love for Achilles design, which is something most people don't notice, is that they decided to portray the cut off hair that Achilles cut off after Patroclus death. This piece of hair was meant to be cut off by his father once he returned from war, to make the joyful return something physical, but as Achilles knew that with his heart cold and his other half now on his way to Hades, he burned it on Patroclus' pyre. You can see the cut off strands of hair close to his face, and its something so specific that, and now I am speaking as an artist myself, I only would've drawn it if I knew of this specific piece of information. Insane. And thank you so much for this video, I am a huge greek mythology enjoyer, especially the Iliad and the Odyssey, and seeing this put together beautifully with my favorite game ever, is fantastic. I'm looking forward to Hades II, and if you make a video on it, I will be waiting happily.

this video is absurdly well polished and voiced, and I love the details like the matched fonts when placing sources in the in game dialogue box.

Just a note on Orpheus, his design was also inspired by Morpheus in the Sandman series, as in that series it's noted that Morpheus is the father of Orpheus.

Just finished the video- WOW!!!! Thank you so much for this masterpiece! I was the kid that grew up reading history and mythos books instead of fiction, and even then there was so much you brought up (and that Hades brought up) that I never knew!! Absolutely delicious video, you deserve a huge pat on the back. I know you had to keep it short, but even then as you said, there was so much more you could delve into with certain characters and items. Characters like Achilles and Orpheus could almost have their own videos!!!

Came back here to rewatch this in preparation for Hades 2. And also to ask for a video like this once that game is out. I can't freaking wait, but I know SGG gotta take their time.

35:08 As a classical philologist (Greek) who also once had to write a paper on Thanatos in university, I confirm that Thanatos hasn't been associated with scythes in antiquity. It's his weapon of choice in modern media, obviously referencing the Grim Reaper, whereas ancient sources portay him, if armed at all, with a sword. Euripides' drama "Alcestis" is a well-known example while also being the extant work of Ancient Greek literature where Thanatos gets to shine the most. The article on scythes in "Der Neue Pauly" (a scientific encyclopedia on the ancient world, written in German) even goes so far as to state that scythes were unknown in Ancient Greece. Sickles were the commonly used agricultural instrument and also heavily associated with Cronus.

Hearing Demeter woman-handling titans with bare fists, and Hestia going commando with an HMG is the funniest things I ever heard XD
