Growing up, I was an avid Tolkien reader. I finished Lord of The Rings in the sixth grade, became obsessed with the MERP pen and paper RPG beginners set, consumed everything that was tangentially related to it. After Tolkien where else was there to go for a dorky kid in the early-mid 90's? After reading Dragonlance, Xanth and a few others I simply lost interest in fantasy for a very long time. Back in '09-10, a friend had loaned me this book. He was very patient, it was left on my bookshelf for months collecting dust. The day I started reading this book was also the day I finished reading the entire damn thing.

Arthur Hoffert Man, I could never do such a thing, when I was finishing this book I was so frustrated that it would end, I just wished it would have several hundreds of pages more and I controlled myself not to read too quickly and enjoy it as long as possible

Name of the Wind is the best world building I've read since Tolkien.
@Motavian9 ай бұрын
@@7A7ER It's been nearly 10 years since I've posted the comment and I still agree with you. If not the best world building, it at least has a believable world and the way information is conveyed organically through character perspective in conversation is wonderful. I know Rothfuss has burned away a lot of good will, but I still don't care about the contrarians being contrary, the first book is wonderful.

you didn't mention Bast now he is going to sneek into your room tonight and threaten you. bettter get some iron. This book shocked me, I didn't think I would like it so much. I cant wait for the third book.
@Mashal1273 жыл бұрын
You think iron will keep you safe? Hear my words, manling. Do not mistake me for my mask. You see light dappling on the water and forget the deep, cold dark beneath. Listen. You cannot hurt me. You cannot run or hide. In this I will not be defied. I swear by all the salt in me: if you run counter to my desire, the remainder of your brief mortal span will be an orchestra of misery. I swear by stone and oak and elm: I'll make a game of you. I'll follow you unseen and smother any spark of joy you find. You'll never know a woman's touch, a breath of rest, a moment's peace of mind. And I swear by the night sky and the ever-moving moon: if you lead my master to despair, I will slit you open and splash around like a child in a muddy puddle. I'll string a fiddle with your guts and make you play it while I dance. You are an educated man. You know there are no such things as demons. There is only my kind. You are not wise enough to fear me as I should be feared. You do not know the first note of the music that moves me.

It's really is an amazing book that I just randomly picked up. Then two years later I downloaded the audio book version, Narrated by Rupert degas. Even if you've read this book before I highly recommend listening to the audiobook. Degas' narration is truly brilliant and does the characters justice. Especially characters like auri and ellodine. Some comments on here say its badly written. They couldn't be further from the truth. As soon as you get to qvothe telling his story to chronicler you'll be hooked. Great review by the way. have you read the lies of Locke Lamora?

If you find the audiobook anywhere else make sure its the one narrated by Rupert degas. He's brilliant

One of the best fantasy I have ever read besides the axe and the thrones, Game of thrones And the magicians

I love these books so much, I'm about halfway through the wise man's fear (the second one) and it reminds me a lot of the power of one by Bruce Courtenay. I love how there's all of these tiny add ons to the lore (like the expression 'a span of days'). I hate Ambrose though. I also love how Kvothe makes all of these frustrating mistakes (even if they make you feel helpless and irritated) because they seem like mistakes people would really make. So yeah, it's a great series. :)

you will probably need several to wait for the next one. I suggest the stormlight archive only two of the books are out in that series as well.
@tovekauppi16168 жыл бұрын
+Jonathan Burns I was literally going to say they while I have never found anything quite like the name of the wind, stormlight archive is just as good in a slightly different way. It's less poetic, but the world is just as rich with culture, creatures and history. It also has a lot of depth and small details that I noticed when I reread the books. If you are familiar with 'wheel of time' it draws some inspiration from there (which makes sense as the author wrote the last three books in that series) but it is also it's own unique thing with an interesting take on magic.

Before I say anything else I wanna point out that I absolutely love this book. With that being said I wish I had his thousands of pages with all the things that he left out. For example when Kvothe sang for the first time and Denna was singing in the crowd we got none of the words he was singing and everyone in the book was awestruck which made me feel ... left out to say the least. And then Kvothe decided to leave out his trail by the iron law and the priests. Made me soooo angryyy! I don't know that's just me probably.

Hey Owl, quick question - is this book appropriate for an 11 year old to read? On a scale of "The Hobbit" to "A Song of Ice and Fire", how would you rate this for kids? Thanks!
@siberianflow13267 жыл бұрын
Bill Allan I'm not Owl but I'll try to answer. I'd say it is less kid friendly than the Hobbit but much more kid friendly than ASOIAF. There is some scary stuff involved and some things will probably fly over a kid's head (and my head too haha, I keep noticing new things on rereads). That being said, except for a number of things involving sex in the second book, I struggle to remember things that somebody may not find appropriate for an 11 year old.
@theherooffire0077 жыл бұрын
I'd say not. It's incredibly violent in some parts (enough to traumatize a young reader), and the themes of the book can sometimes get really dark and heavy - stuff you can appreciate better if you're a bit older. Most people categorize this series as "adult fantasy". I'd say its a book for late teens/young adults. That's just me though. Hope it helps.

From this video you'll learn how much characters play such an important rule, and how they are so important to discover and get to know them, personalities, what they like what they don't, their pride to be what they are, their relationships/ relations with their parents their tribes/communities and their beliefs their jokes if they have any their neighborhood..!! their glory. Their cowardice, All that is included in worldbuilding books as I can see

John Smith Pat has said that he doesn't like when stories drag on. That it can become too big and unwieldy, stale, and expectations, etc. Instead, he says he'll write Kvothe's story as a 3 book tale and end it there. He'd gone on to say, however, that there will be other stories/books in the Four Corners world, just that they won't be about Kvothe. We'll have new characters, likely new locales and an entire world to explore. Pat has really built his world, with mythologies, religions, currencies and societies that we haven't even heard of that already exist in his head in his world. He wants to explore more of it, but doesn't want to get bogged down with one protagonist. I'm just a really big fan who used to read his blog a LOT (still sometimes skim it, depending on content) and have watched/listened to a WAY too many interviews from him on KZbin and NPR, as well as following him on Facebook and I drove like 2-3 hours (each way) to get my books signed and listen to him talk for a few hours. It was awesome and if you ever know of him anywhere near enough that you CAN go, you should go. He's really friendly and grateful for his fans.

Since they are doing movies and a TV series I think they should make a movie about his time all the way to just as he makes it to The University and the last shots of the movie being Kvothe reaching the top of the arch of the Omethi bridge, seeing the top of the Archives for the first time then smiling as he walks toward it and fade to black with "The Wind Cries Mary" by Jimi Hendrix over the credits ;) then most of the TV series being about his time at The University.

I've listened to an audio book called The age of Myth by Michel J.sulleven and found my self really enjoying it so I might by the paper versions of the series but do you have any other recommendations?

May be a bit nit picky but it was bothering me the way you said Kvothe. Ive always heard it pronounced "Quothe"

I actually looked up interviews with the author to figure out the right way to pronounce it

yeah I watched some of his interviews as well and his pronunciation was actually closer to yours, so you're right!

+Martin Bryant i think you can pronounce it as you want, the story doesn't change.

+Martin Bryant He said you can pronounce it either way but the correct one is is "quothe" it says it right in the books

I'm pretty certain the book says its pronounced *like* Quothe, which makes sense then for the different pronounciation
