For teenage freeski pro Eileen Gu, the decision of a lifetime didn’t come easily, but she did what had to be done.
Having already earned her first World Cup victory at the FIS Freeski World Cup at just 15, San Francisco-born Eileen Gu looked to her mother’s birthplace of China for a new challenge ahead of the 2022 Olympic Games - to inspire a new generation of athletes far away from the celebrated ski credentials of North America.
Choosing to compete for China rather than the United States came at a cost for Gu, but she’s certain it won’t be long until the decision pays off - it’s already having a huge effect.

Congratulations to Eileen Gu! Fully respects her decisions and her support for the Chinese side of her. Sports should be about personal talent / interest and not politics. USA is supposed to be a free country, so act like one and let her do what she want and represent who ever she wants. So proud of her for taking a stand against all the bullies out there.

@@jlim003 I know plenty of people with parents with “shit English” but still only speak their second language at a “just okay” level, in everyday stuff like what they want to eat for dinner, where are they going today, etc. They may think they are “fluent” in their second language but to be able to give TV interviews in that language without peppering English in every other sentence is guaranteed not easy. Chinese Americans are not Chinese. An American-born Chinese is, according to the Chinese government, not an American. Her dad is neither. Her dad seemed to be an European American, and if that's the case she was a 100% American and 0% Chinese when she was born (as one of her parents has the nationality of her country of birth), but since she has joined Chinese nationality, she's 100% Chinese and 0% American. Either way it doesn't look like she wants to mention her father anyway. If her father wasn't with her at the time she was born and her mother held neither American nationality nor American green card, then according to the Chinese government she's a Chinese national by birth and her American identity (if there was any issues) will not be recognized (which means the Chinese government would not stamp anything on her "American passport"). Since the Chinese media called her a "naturalized Chinese", the latter case doesn't seemed to be true.
@yjk5737

"Chinese" is an ambiguous term in English because the same word is used for both ancestry/descent (族裔) and nationality/citizenship (國籍). It's important to clarify with context which meaning is intended. Maybe in English people should use "Han" instead of "Chinese" for the ancestry/descent term and it would be clearer.

Her difficult and brave choice to ski for China is admirable as she chose a more difficult route but it will allow her to influence a much broader audience in a country where there are no role model to lookup to and if she wins she will great impact the sport and grow the sport which will benefit all in the sport.

I can't imagine choosing to have any association with China(CCP) right now. It's not an exaggeration that wealthy Chinese often pay a lot to emigrate (flee) to the west. China is an amazing place and Chinese people are awesome but to many it's a much more surprising choice than an athlete choosing to represent Japan or Korea or basically any other country where they have roots and can find a good team and support system(Naomi Osaka comes to mind).

Possible reasons or representing China: 1)she chose to because her mother is born in China 2)she was born in China but raised in the US 3)too much competition to make USA team, less to make China team. We won’t know unless she says why. Other athletes do the same for different sports. For many, to be able to make it to the Olympics no mater what country they represent, is worth it. Some countries do not require you to be a citizen, possibly just ancestry. US ski team is notoriously hard to qualify for with limited space and limited sponsorship.
