Carl F. Hostetter is a member of the Elvish Linguistic Fellowship, editor of Vinyar Tengwar, co-editor of Tengwestië journal, and now the editor of "The Nature of Middle-earth" in bookstores this September!
From HarperCollins's product description for the new book:
The first ever publication of J.R.R. Tolkien’s final writings on Middle-earth, covering a wide range of subjects and perfect for those who have read and enjoyed The Silmarillion, The Lord of the Rings, Unfinished Tales, and The History of Middle-earth, and want to learn more about Tolkien’s magnificent world.
It is well known that J.R.R. Tolkien published The Hobbit in 1937 and The Lord of the Rings in 1954-5. What may be less known is that he continued to write about Middle-earth in the decades that followed, right up until the years before his death in 1973.
For him, Middle-earth was part of an entire world to be explored, and the writings in The Nature of Middle-earth reveal the journeys that he took as he sought to better understand his unique creation. From sweeping themes as profound as Elvish immortality and reincarnation, and the Powers of the Valar, to the more earth-bound subjects of the lands and beasts of Númenor, the geography of the Rivers and Beacon-hills of Gondor, and even who had beards!
This new collection, which has been edited by Carl F Hostetter, one of the world’s leading Tolkien experts, is a veritable treasure-trove offering readers a chance to peer over Professor Tolkien’s shoulder at the very moment of discovery: and on every page, Middle-earth is once again brought to extraordinary life.
Carl's essay "Elvish as She Is Spoke", which was referenced at one point in the interview, can be read here: www.elvish.org...

The point about Elvish pregnancy is very interesting as Miriel’s experience may be an exception, depending on how you interpret it.

Interesting in the movie FotR , during the Council scene when Gandalf possessed the the Morgul blade and Galadriel spoke to his mind. The look on Gandalf’s face was oops, she heard me thinking, do I answer? He chose to answer and now I believe he could have shut her out if he chose to.

When C.S. Kilby spoke at Mythcon I, he said that his friend JRRT, then still alive, had expressed regret that it was not possible to copyright his Elvish languages. Kilby said that he suggested to Tolkien that he write a book in (and perhaps I am remembering incorrectly and he said 'on' and not 'in') Elvish and copyright that. Tolkien's reply was that this was an interesting idea, "but I don't know enough Elvish". Kilby mentioned the story to demonstrate that to Tolkien, the languages, and other elements of his created world, were a vital and living thing; but it also reminds us that 'neo-Sindarin' et al. are not Tolkien's work, but a form of linguistic fan fiction.

This has been , and it’s not done, a very informative interview. I purchased and have received my copies of VT and find them very interesting on different levels because there are many Easter eggs.

If JRR Tolkien's miscellanea is all published, how about Christopher Tolkien? I'd be shocked if he didn't attempt to finish some of his fathers Unfinished Tales.

Amazing interview, thank you so much! I could listen to you and Carl for ages discussing in detail every single writing in the book :D Btw, some unwanted advice for a potential reader. I suggest that you are already very familiar with the contents of the Silmarillion and the Unfinished Tales. I think it is also helpful having read volumes X-XI-XII of the History of Middle-earth, but it is certainly not strictly necessary. Although, the part called "Myths Transformed" from vol X of the HoME (Morgoth's Ring) is an extremely nice bridge between the Silmarillion (and Unfinished Tales) and The Nature of Middle-earth.

Good point! Morgoth's Ring in particular has some of the most interesting and wonderful material in the whole HoMe series.

I actually heard about this book ages ago from an interview with one of the editors, actually! I love how many people seem to just 'stumble' upon the series. I was also very early on fascinated with the languages. I never made the leap of going into and learning them, but I did look a lot into them. One of my cats actually hand a Sindarin word for a name. But I had no idea it had gone through such an evolution. Gasp such fandangled tech as a laser printer! I love it. I will never not be amazed by the power of fans that amassed before the age of the internet. True dedication and respect! That's so amazing that he had that respect and relationship with Christopher! It's so sweet! That is a very creative way to choose a title! Oh let's just ask horses, of course! Numbers go straight over my head. The thought that anyone could even do that... is astounding. ...I cannot say I can even picture any state bringing THAT much joy to want to be in it for that long. But good for trying to make things a little less frustrating for females. I love the philosophical perspective on corruption and self doubt. Awww... I want to know how to make lembas drats. Actually, I did make a random online recipe back in high school as part of a book project. Because, why not? My teacher was awesome. I LOVE the idea of the appendix! Ugh. I've gotta get off my bum and get a copy of this. ...Oh Dan.... the US is anything but the Undying lands. Though bless your childhood brain for thinking well of these shores. This was an absolute delight! Ironically I was meaning to message you the week before this came out that I might be able to put you in touch with one of the translators for this book through another youtuber if you were interested... and then bam this was waiting. I just thought I was onto something ;)

Great interview, I am so looking forward to getting stuck into this. On a minor point, thank goodness to hear "Lembas" being pronounced correctly as opposed to the Jackson revisionist wording, which seems to have crept into far too many channels.

Thanks Dan for this interview. I was 13 (1977) when I first discovered Tolkien's LOTR and wrote out the runes and Tengwar in a notebook, and developed my own set of 'translations'. This was way before there was the Internet. Years later, I found more material about elvish and it was so academic and way over my head. So I just invested in the histories and my interest in the language languished because it became too lofty. I hope 'now' will come the time when these will be made more accessible, maybe a vulgar elvish, a common version versus the Common Tongue we already use.

I was struck by a seeming inconsistency about Sindarin. Tuor at first had a rough time understanding the Sindarin spoken by the guards of the hidden city, which Tolkien explained as being due to the city's long isolation. But in all other references to contacts between ex-citizens of the hidden city and the outside world, there's no mention of any difficulty communicating. Is this not an inconsistency?

So interesting! This explains why Finrod "fell before the throne" because Sauron used fear on him to open his mind.

29:24 ... Its why I can't write. I constantly experience digressions and will end up at the top of a mountain when I was only writing about the bottom of the sea. At least Tolkien had the for sight to to write anyway.

Hey a familiar face! :) I haven't listened to this yet (saving it to my Middle Earth playlist) but I was reading through comments and yours stood out to me - I have exactly the same problem! I love to write, I _adore_ writing, but I always end up somewhere totally different than where I intended to end up: Ambling down some lonely mountain summit when I was originally intending to explore what was hidden beneath the warm stones resting in a little ravine nestled somewhere in the woods. Words are my curse, but also my passion. Tolkien was able to channel that tendency to meander with words and weave it into something so beautiful, so perfect, I am in awe every time I read his works. Even The Hobbit, which people say is a "kids book", often astounds me with the beauty, humour, and sheer brilliance of the dialogue and scene structure; when we see into the sweet confusion of Bilbo's mind or explore the twisted darkness of Mirkwood. Tolkien is a genius 💚
