Notes: - The order of some events is changed compared to the game's plot. Namely, Amatsu appears WAY earlier, both for pacing and as a reference to the fact that it was at some point intended for Base Rise. - Everything said here about the Qurio and their lifecycle is canon, with one exception: It is not confirmed that Risen Elders are a precursor state to a full symbiosis - the game says nothing about how they fit into the process.

I like how the story plays out differently since the monsters the characters fight are so different than in the previous episode. For hammer boy, he was fighting the strongest monsters in the entire series (which needlessly to say was really unlucky on his end, and most likely ended in this death). Here the strongest monsters are more so standard final-boss level (with either Amatsu, Giasmagorm, or maybe Primal Malzeno as the strongest monster).

I like the arc the hunter went through. He was greatly dislikable at first, reminding me of someone who would be on r/iamverybadass. He didn't even bother to spell Utsushi's name correctly or even consistantly. Yet despite that rough start, he started feeling guilt for his behavior. He realized why he fights: to not think. Emotions are hard, and for someone as dismissive, arrogant, and walled off as he was, that guilt (an obviously foreign emotion he had rarely if ever felt before) from Utsushi's disappointment would be extremely unpleasant and difficult to deal with. He fights because it is a distraction from stuff like that. He turned that reason to fight into something beautiful. Now he fights to protect those he cares for. He fights to learn about the world around him. He went from brute to researcher because of that respect he gained for those he fought alongside, and the respect he gained from the world around him. He saw a grieving mother in Narwa wheras his previous self would have seen a paycheck. He saw a tragedy in Malzeno, and where he would have once not hesitated to kill it, he instead helped it. And now he lives with Utsushi, a man whose name he once didn't even bother to learn properly. What a beautiful arc. I love these videos. I like to have them on in the background while playing Monster Hunter, though I pause during more difficult hunts that require more of my attention so that I don't miss any parts. This is quality content right here.

Okay, so full review time. Good Gog, this is amazing. It blows anything else MH-related that you've done completely out of the water. -You not only explained the Forbidden Monsters, but wrote an extremely compelling narrative. The narrator gradually (and realistically) developed into a better person - going from a musclebound brute who valued only his own strength while viewing monsters as little more than challenges and potential trophies to an intellectual who understands the value of friendship, and that monsters are feeling creatures with their own wills and desires. -The MHW Forbidden Episode gave me chills , but this one gave me feels. The revelation for the Hunter that many of these elder dragons are not only sapient but deeply emotional was awesome. My particular favorite parts of this aspect were when you talked about the dragons' eyes in a given moment, and the emotion conveyed in them - Narwa's round eyes after the narrator sliced open her pregnant belly, and Primordial Malzeno's plea for help in its struggle to resist the Qurio. -On a related note, I like how you used eyes (particularly the closing of them) in a very compelling way. It's hard to exactly describe, but it was wonderful how you did it. -I like how these are not just fight scenes - even if those are the most interesting parts - but it includes some of the beats of the original story, albeit heavily changed. You also gave Utsushi a prominent role, and he probably deserved more of one overall. I even liked how you made them end up as roommates at the end (or possibly more). -The fight scenes seemed more realistic compared to actual gameplay - many of these fights were settled in as little as a single solid hit rather than a long struggle. I will admit that the narrator beheading the Apex Zinogre with one hit was pretty badass (albeit brutal, and Utsushi rightly reacted as such) but the Mezaporta Hunter essentially 1HKOing Flaming Espinas with ESPINAS DUAL BLADES was even more so. -I like how you made the exploding, rocket-propelled Dragonators feel a lot more effective than they are in game, making the fact that Gaismagorm still tanked them even more worrying. It makes me wish even more that we got a Hazard Gaismagorm quest - alas, the final two Event Quests are hunts against Malzeno+Magnamalo and Scorned Magnamalo+Primordial Malzeno. -I even like how you depicted the Qurio plague after Gaismagorm as a semi-realistic epidemic - first escalating with progressively more powerful monsters getting infected, then with cases dropping when Risen elders became the primary focus of the Anomaly Research Lab, until finally reducing their numbers to the point where they could literally see in the end in sight with Primordial Malzeno becoming the unwilling true host of the last batch of Qurio. I could see this not just being a movie, but a fully fledged animated series, with each "entry" coinciding with an episode or entire arc. For example: -An episode during the Qurio Plague arc where the narrator (and possibly a female hunter) finds some female Mizutsunes gathering in the Shrine Ruins, only for an Afflicted male to show up looking to establish a harem in spite of being in horrible agony, and the hunters having to slay him before the Qurio start infecting the females. -An episode featuring TeaCommonShark's OCs Reku (a smaller-than-average Rathalos) and Ahana (a larger-than-average, heavily scarred Gold Rathian). They get accosted by an Afflicted Silver Rathalos who is trying to drive away or kill Reku, and then forcibly mate with Ahana, but the hunters kill the Afflicted Silver to prevent the disease from spreading. In one scene, I imagine the grateful Rathalos allows the hunters to see its nest, and after some coaxing from her mate, Ahana allows them to see their hatchlings, which are a mix of regular Rath, metal Raths as well as halfway-between chicks. If Bahari is there, cue him losing his mind with excitement. Anyway, amazing work. 9001/420 stars, would watch repeatedly.

Kind of crazy how Malzeno's story is similar to the Demon of Razgriz poem "Amidst the eternal waves of time From a ripple of change shall the storm rise Out of the abyss peer the eyes of a demon Behold the Razgriz, its wings of black sheath The demon soars through dark skies Fear and death trail its shadow beneath Until men united wield a hallowed sabre In final reckoning, the beast is slain As the demon sleeps, man turns on man His own blood and madness soon cover the earth From the depths of despair awaken the Razgriz Its raven wings ablaze in majestic light." "When history witnesses a great change, Razgriz reveals itself... first, as a dark demon. As a demon, it uses its power to rain death upon the land, and then it dies. However, after a period of slumber, Razgriz returns, this time, as a great hero." I only realized how it connects since I remembered a dialogue that called Primordial the "Demonlord." And since Primordial was showcased at the Developer's Roundtable, Primordial was essentially the Demonlord of the Roundtable.

Ho boy, I knew this was going to be nice and long, but not Avengers Endgame-long! Anyway, I find it interesting that you went with this whole adventure starting out as a "punishment" for the narrator. It makes you realize that every Hunter has their own motivations for becoming one - our protagonist is just out for glory and the thrill of the hunt. Every Hunter has their own story that lives in the player's head. Also, the forced downgrade is a nice reminder that Hunters aren't that much more powerful than "normal" people - it reminds us how progress in MH is entirely defined by the strength of your gear (unless you're freaking Peppo). I've just started watching it, but I'm excited to see if and how the narrator changes as a person.

The scene with Allmother was...thought provoking. You never really sit there and think about it during hunts, these are beings that have their own thoughts own motivations of verying complexity, you could even consider Narwa and Ibushi to be sentient since we know they can transfer their thoughts through others. Its like killing another person but the thing is it was either them or us. We had no other option BUT to slay Narwa and Ibushi, a mother and father trying their hardest to bring their children into the world only to be slaughtered for their efforts at being good parents. Its incredibly sad but life isnt all about heros slaying the evil beast and saving the village its a muddy mix of greys and sometimes you have to do what needs to be done despite the moral quandaries that come with it

Really love your narrative content. I especially liked your take on Narwa. Between her and Xeno’jiva I’d say the devs have some grudges against babies. A bit too bad that you passed on a lot of content and didn’t follow the story close but with almost 3 hours of video, I well understand your choice. Thanks for the amazing story!

The final battle with the Qurio, fighting alongside malzeno brought me to tears. THIS is what a monster hunter is supposed to be.

my favorite part was you explaining the whole Qurio evolution process better than the game ever could and the narrative felt better mingled in with the ecology part than the last forbidden episode(not to say the last one was bad, this one was just better) I always look forward to these and will always do so even if the content isn't going to be monster hunter just because I like your way of writing

Amen to that. The idea of the Qurio actually evolving in response to loss of Gaismagorm is especially compelling. The new strain's collective idea of enticing potential hosts with power in exchange for symbiosis is a scary one. I used to think that the Risen Elder Dragons were individuals that had simply shaken off the Qurio - but the idea that symbiosis was still not out of the question makes their existence all the more terrifying. Imagine a Risen Shagaru Magala that had fully become a "true host". It could infect its new Qurio servants with Frenzy Virus, and have them spread BOTH plagues simultaneously.

I truly hope you're proud of the great work you've done with this video, as you well should be! You've done a lovely job making this character feel believable and his arc feel satisfying- I am usually sad when a battle-loving character hangs up their weapons, but you made it feel so natural for this character. Even in the early parts of his arc, but especially with primordial Malzeno, you made his emotional connections to the monsters feel like they could believably challenge him in ways he isn't expecting, make him stop and think about what he's doing for once...and then eventually, he finds thinking all the time even more thrilling than turning his brain off to hit lizard with stick. Thank you so much for producing this story, you did a wonderful job

I just cannot begin to give words to how absolutely perfect this is. Even after dozens of hunts, I still feel sad every time I see a primordial malzeno convulse in pain at the qurio warping it. This video is actually a work of art

OHHH THIS WAS SO GOOD. I have such a special place in my heart for Sunbreak, and the moment I was introduced to this hunter's perspective, I knew where this was going, but GOD was the payoff so delightful anyways. It's such a refreshing change from the standard portrayal of Hunters, an emphasis on what it means to really be a Hunter, that aspect of protecting and respecting the creatures of the world. I love how you presented the Anomaly, too, building out what's just a sort of funky endgame mechanic into what feels like a proper crisis. Your lore and world building in these story-esque videos is really phenomenal, building on the already heavy lore of Monster Hunter into what feels like a living, breathing world. And you really captured the emotional power of Primordial Malzeno. A shining knight, a paladin, fighting the forces of corruption, who you end oft everything not by slaying, but by fighting side by side. Plus, it's just a really good character arc for the Hunter you presented. I hope our Greatsword user can take a nice nap now and go hang out with his boyf- er, friend, Utsushi.

This story is absolutely moving and phenomenal. Your Monster Hunter videos are my go-to when I see "The biology of monster hunter" as I love the documentary-style videos, and yet I couldn't wait for yet another story-driven one... and it did not disappoint. This, along with your Monster Hunter World Redacted episode, almost feel like theyre opposites - with the comparison of many of those elder dragons to monsters, beasts, and horrid inhuman things. This one makes them out to not only be animals - but intelligent creatures, capable of thought and family and emotion. It's a narrative I greatly enjoy and greatly appreciate. Absolutely amazing episode

this is a fantastic piece of storytelling. the attention-grabbing protagonist, the way he chose to tell the story, and thus the story of MH Rise - i think "rise" is the perfect title for this video, and the hunter in it. really appreciated the references, & brought up a lot of different facets of MH that i love. epilogue was a really great bit of closure. this video definitely going on my relisten list until the end of time. bravo, absolutely, and thank you

Conclusion Beautiful. I would love to see more hunter and monster interaction in the next games just to add to lores and stories. Primordial Malzeno trusting the hunters is such a beautiful sight. Long live the hunter who became the most peaceful researcher known to the guild. Salute to the preservation of his weapon that mirrored who he was in the past. It's a great lesson.

I love the forbidden episodes so much. It just reminds me of the story I've built for my characters for each Game I've played. My Rise hunter was a jaded older version of my World Hunter who was broken after the Black Dragon incidents in the New World. Absolutely hated the beurocratic BS of the Guild. It became a long running joke with my friends that even translated over to our MH DnD campaign. I love your videos and I feel a kindred spirit every time I watch them. Thanks so much for these!

Got a crazy idea for a future hunter journal... Why not a frontier hunter who starts unsure of themselves in possibly the most dangerous hunting grounds as a sink or swim experience. Maybe even going a bit unhinged at the more terrifying beasts, followed by the serenity of how far they came. As it is, this was probably your best work yet, and I look forward to what the future holds.

I see what you meant when you said Primordial Malzeno impacted the writing, I kinda saw the arc coming, and honestly that was a pretty good one to tackle things on. *mildly* sad Violet Mizutsune gets such a short presentation, but at the point the story was at, there was no helping it. also props to Malzeno for litterally vaporizing some poor bloke, that's kinda how the demo one felt ngl.

I kinda want the script of this. The video, the story, and a narrative that follows a once arrogant hunter is simply beautiful. Edit: I honestly think that a story of an arrogant hunter that broke a major law of the guild, and punishes him by helping a village, learning valuable lessons along the way and right a journal about it is very fitting for a series, or even a movie. I would say, amazing job for this video.

Just finished the 6-hour full video for Rise, but I had to come here to leave a like and give special praise to this masterpiece. This has gotta be one of the best stories I've ever heard (though I might be biased because Monster Hunter), and I genuinely find the writing to be better than most media made today.
