In this episode of Blog & Mablog, Pastor Doug Wilson shows us why he's become the naughty boy of evangelicalism.
For more from Doug, check out his page on Canon+

"The Overton Window cannot be moved from inside the window.
That can only be done from outside the window, by people who are willing to say things that are outside the range of acceptable discourse.
Things that will be thought to be rude, crude, and unattractive by all the respectable people.
If the Overton Window is to be moved back in a more sane direction, it going to have to be done by someone very disreputable indeed."

I pastor a SBC (for now, much can change in June) and I have see all that you have presented. I’ve preached verse by verse through Ephesians and hold nothing back. Several families left, accusing me of being “winsome enough” and thinking I should “make the sermon more tailored for visitors”. But I refused, I will always continue to street preach, make disciples, and follow Scripture in all aspects regardless of popularity. Thanks be to God, because while we lost several families of either false-converts (based in their own testimony of conversion and fruit displayed over the course of time) or immature weak Christians, God replace them with twice as many mature believers who felt starved at their church and are now happy to be part of our family and local body of believers. Be a man, stand up and speak out, quit being a coward because God hates cowards. Tell the truth. That’s why people either love Doug Wilson (the false converts, lost, and immature believers usually can’t stand him) or they hate him. I love the guy, he’s awesome. I don’t agree with him on eschatology but I like him and his videos.

I’m so glad to hear fellow Christians saying what I’m thinking. I feel totally isolated much of the time because most of the Christians around me, friends and fellow congregation members, are all apart of the second group. Because of that, they capitulate to the culture in order to not make a stir in public, keep their piety well watered, and look toward the future only in the hopes of being raptured out of it all.

You’re not alone. Remember that. And remember that many abandoned Jesus at the most crucial point. Now that His work of saving us from sin is complete, we should have the extra confidence and boldness that the early apostles didn’t have. All that being said, I think one of the biggest factors pushing so many Christians into the second group is debt. Debt, monthly obligations, higher prices, and pressure to give kids a better life than we had has put many families in the situation of both parents working and being distracted or so heavily in debt (living paycheck to paycheck) that they can’t afford to fight any battles for fear of losing the war of providing for their family. If more people had abundant savings, paid off cars/homes, and low expenses, people would be more eager to defend what they know to be right. The world enticed them to chase wealth and are now finding themselves exposed and vulnerable, unable to fight, and leaving us alone so the first group can play whack a mole with those that do stand up and can take it.

A large percentage are practicing homosexuals or at least sympathetic to it, they don’t want to upset Caesar who hands them billions each year for hush money er, cough, I mean aid to the illegals poor. Or they are true believers who think this world is indeed perfectible by man without God. So it seems disciples of all denominational lines are all aware we are called the Church Militant not the Church Milquetoast. All I know is we’d better be at our posts when the Master returns.

I appreciate your insights, I think you’re spot on. This has reinvigorated me to keep preaching the gospel to myself and by Gods grace, courageously sharing it with others ( being a woman I would never attempt to preach to men in a church ) but outside of church, both in person and on social media to both men and women I do believe that is what our Lord Jesus Christ commanded and so that is what is needed most, the proclaiming of the gospel with an unapologetic calling out of what Gods Word says is sin, all the while continuing to strive for personal holiness and to repent of my own sins…. Anyway, thank you brother, your posts give me courage to fight the good fight of faith.

Churches accept voting behaviour as some kind of ethical exemption. According to modern church discipline, you are not allowed to be a womaniser, drug user, alcoholic, abuser, gambler, or gossip (mostly anyway). However, you are allowed to vote for socialism, gay marriage, transgender rights, racial policies, etc, as long as it is under the banner of "Politics" rather than righteousness. Furthermore, if your conscience is triggered by "Political" issues, you better zip the lip, or you will be labled "Divisive". You will be told to set your mind on heavenly things. Indeed, if we are to move the "Overton Window", we must be prepared to be persecuted by our own church. If you are not ready for this kind of betrayal and persecution, best just adorn your speach with pietistic drivel about personal relationship and being "Blessed". But, please avoid any relevant conversation about righteousness.

Yes, spot on. I am one, and my wife now also who, through reading and listening to others and verifying with scripture; have moved from category 2 to category 3. The biggest historical event that began catapulting me from cat 2 to cat 3 was studying the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. Seeing how much both the OT and NT point to that time, it dismantled the whole dispensational view, the pre-trib rapture, a future 7-yr Tribulation period, literal 1000 yr reign from Jerusalem, and a satan indwelt individual known as "the" antichrist. All that is replaced with post-millenial victory of Christ and the great commission being accomplished (not just attempted). That understanding naturally lead to a switch from the typical widespread Baptist Arminian views to a firm reformed Calvinist position on predestination, election, doctrines of grace, and most importantly the sovereignty of God. Some key players besides Doug and the goings on in Moscow ID, were Dr. James White, Jeff Durbin, Phil Kayser, Bruce Gore to name a few.

What I struggle to understand about the post-trib view is how for 2 thousand years after the kingdom was established, the world has only gotten worse and worse despite the church spreading (spreading across the globe even with numbers supposedly dwindling). Unless you mean to say the kindom rose and then fell to give rise to secular leftism, especially one where corrupt governments reign over the lives of people with an iron grip as seen in the past 2 years let alone the past century. I don't understand how this is the new Earth that Revelation mentions.
@twood6992

@@TheSergio1021 The world has not gotten worse and worse at all. Your only thinking of last several decades in modern context. Your chance of survival to your first birthday were quite low and overall they say 50% for making to puberty in the first many centuries, if that Then you had black plaque killing large populations. Lots of death was the norm. More than 50% or higher chance you would be a slave and nothing but property. Wars were common place. They say average life expectancy between 1500-1800 about 35-40. Do you really think that past was better? Today the rise of secular humanism in last 100-150 years has resulted in much of the godlessness today, but that worldview is rapidly disintegrating before our eyes. Certainly LGBT and transgenderism is not a victorious long term strategy. It will die just from simple biology but God judges it. Another example is the modern Olympics. Until 1900 it was unheard of for most nation states in the world to gather athletes for non-lethal sporting. Not praising the Olympics, certainly today's version, but it was the fruit of the Kingdom of God in the earth that such events were formed where many in a limited sense turned swords into plowshares. I believe what Hebrews says that over time the things that cannot be shaken (God's kingdom and church in the earth) will remain. We just need to better think long term, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

What a huge Word Salad......Jesus said concentrate on the soulution not the problem.... Then....the problems will be taken care of by Father.....starting with the greatest problem ....self... but that would take self sacrifice....sacrificing the self that lives to point out problems of others .... Live to be the answer ....not the sheriff ......or self appointed district attorney.... If you see the problem in your church...your denomination.....sacrifice your self in service to Them....learn to pray and intercede for them....BE the answer instead stating the obvious.... Break this stupid cycle of pointing out others problems......by being the answer through intercession... Take off your badges....gather your towel and water jug.....become the feet washer.. There’s a fourth category the Dominion Bros don’t like to admit exists. It looks very similar to the one described as Dominion, but it is fully aware that this world, every square inch of it, will have the carpet ripped up, the walls knocked down, the plates smashed and the clothes thrown out onto the street when the King really comes home. He’ll let the rot of sin runs its complete course, all the way down to the bottom before he does so. Then He’ll judges the whole earth, His image bearers at the front, before lighting the whole of Creation on fire and incarnating a new habitation for Himself and His people. Most of humanity won’t make it through that filter, yet His family will be populated with every tongue, tribe and nation. It’s Resurrection. It’s Harvest. What’s old won’t be remembered; and that’s not because it’s been a long time and we worked all the kinks out. It’s because there’ll be nothing left of it but those who’ve already died. It’s an outlook that calls us to be faithful but not fanciful. We build a life on the Rock, fully realizing our legacy doesn’t have a place in the world that’s coming. There’s just not room for it. We wholeheartedly rejoice in the attendant suffering we are given to as a result of humanity’s headlong rush to the bottom. We stop trying to build franchises and hoping something of ours might last. We look to the glory of eternity with our feet firmly planted in the muck; digging for pennies, looking for lost sheep, and welcoming wayward sons back into the family.

I think a bit harsh on group 2, or anyone premil. I appreciate the energy of your post-mil dominionist perspective, but it certainly has plenty of flaws. I would love more cordial discourse between groups 2/3...and by group 2, a return to the historical pre-mill position, not the one capitalized upon by folks raised on the left-behind books. There's the pure escapist head in the sand position, and then there's one that understand we will never rightly restore Earth without Christ's physical return, but are to be obedient in expanding the gospel so that all the elect and fullness of gentiles comes in in order to trigger the millennial reign. That's our job - we will not fully convert the whole Earth, but we are to be faithful to complete the work of sharing the gospel.

Premil is not biblical, I think it should be considered heresy. It an impossible position to hold since every bit of it contradicts scripture. It denies the full authority of Jesus which he proclaimed, it makes Jesus a liar, and is anti-great commission. Hebrews 10:12-13 (ESV): But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 1 Corinthians 15:24-26 (ESV): Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. Jesus reigns from His ascension until judgement day. There is nothing that “triggers” its arrival. That mustard seed was planted in the 1st century and will grow throughout time.

Amen, the Amillennialist believers reject the word of God. In the OT, God gave many prophecies concerning his earthly reign from the throne of David in Jerusalem. By rejecting the prophecies, and symbolizing everything they dont understand in the book of Revelation and the rest of the Scriptures. Amillennialist add and take away from the word of God, they are acting like a cult. Denying God's word is to call God a liar. Amillennialist deny that Scripture must be fulfilled. When is a lion going to eat straw like an ox, when is the wolf going to lie down with the sheep, and leopard lie down with the goat, and when is a person dying of 100 years of age considered a child, and when is a child going to lead them. When is Jesus Christ going to reign with the rod of iron. When if not in the 1000 years of reign of Christ just as the Scripture says in Revelation 20. Amillennialist are worse than Charismatics, they purposely reject God's word, Charismatics are deceived and don't know it. Amillennialist deliberately ignore the word of God, and to them all of the book of Revelation is symbolic. So they go around prophesying lies, they say there is no rapture but the word of God says in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18. For the LORD Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, the dead in Christ will rise first, then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and be with the Lord always. Paul says therfore comfort one another with these words. Amillennialist, like I said, they reject God's word of truth. They add to the word of God and take away from it, even though they know God's severe warning in Rev. 22:18, the still mock God and His warning, but they are fools I tell you, no one mocks God and speaks lies in His name and gets away with it, no, not even the word of God denying Amillennialist are going to get away with their blasphemy of calling God a liar. Repent Doug for calling God a liar, and stop sinning against Him and leading people astray with your Amillennialist lies. Stop it, or else you will find out that the warning to you and all Amillennialist in the book of Revelation 22:18, is not symbolic but literal just like 1Thessalonians 4:16-18 is literal. Amillennialist, must have their head deep In the sand, and reject Scripture continually. The Scripture clearly teaches that world and its evil is going to get worse and worse, but Amillennialist reject this truth also, they say no its getting better and better and we Amillennialist are going to make it better, so that Jesus Christ can come into the fullness of His kingdom. If you would only believe God's word the book of Revelation you would know that you are deceived and are deceiving many with your Amillennialist religion. Repent, or else you all will soon realize that God's warning to you in Rev 22 is real, no matter how much you symbolize it.

@@TheSergio1021 your question doesn’t really make sense. You are taking a present tense, asserting its past tense, as a counter to future tense. You know how God made promises to Israel and they didn’t believe him thinking the task was impossible? But God did it just like he said he would. Lets not doubt like Israel, scripture says: Isaiah 9:6-7 (ESV): For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. Great content as usual. I would that the entirety of evangelicalism woulds weigh in on the crisis as you have so eloquently described it; but alas, the largest part of that "entirety is so self absorb with declining membership, new building programs and other miscellaneous, and somewhat superfluous, issues that they have no interest in tackling the hard stuff. These issues are unfortunately ignored by most congregants for a number of reasons and one of them would be that the church leadership has failed to raise them to a level of visibility that might garner attention by those who might have a strong opinion. The last thing the local church want to do is upset the older members who generally care and the younger members who generally don't care.

But we're not opposed to tongues of fire. Fine with me. Presbyterian churches around here have revivals. At least they used to because I attended one. A brilliant treatise on what is, what is not, what should never have been, and what must be done. Just one complaint, stop calling the good guys "evangelicals." That term was coopted by the lefties of the early part of the 20th century to differentiate the genteel Christians (not really) from those ugly, smelly fundamentalists. Though it must be recognized that a great many fundamentalists went wacky with the big D (i.e., Dispensationalism) ... some very wacky. Regardless, the distinctives of modern-day Evangelicalism are compromise, compromise, and compromise...so count me out. I would much rather be part of the Biblical Christian party, if you please. You may have forgotten a fourth group: the "power religion" of those who believe (from a fairly broad reading of Scripture) that the present power of contemporary worldlings is an illusion, and that Christ actually holds all the power. The illusion may be a fairly impressive and convincing one at times, but it is merely an illusion. Christ holds all the power. It's therefore unnecessary to wrest the "controls" from the worldlings (i.e., "dominion"), because the worldlings' power is an illusion; what is needed is to patiently persevere under Christ's rule, making His disciples and pulling back the curtain for them on the illusion until he comes, visibly tears down the whole illusion and fully displays his power. There's that form of religion as well.

@@paulmelonas7263 Again - reread the great commission. It's a restatement of Genesis 1:28. Go, be fruitful, multiply, and have dominion aka make disciples. Discipleship and teaching in Jesus' time is NOTHING close to how we define discipleship today. Disciples in America are just people who are "preached the Gospel" and give mental assent. In Jesus' time, a disciple, known as a Talmid, was intended to BECOME the teacher. The teacher had FULL authority over the person and the disciple fully submitted to that authority living and breathing every second with them. This idea of authority over those who are disciples originates from Jesus, hence why he started the Great Commission with ALL authority has been given to me - THEREFORE GO. That's dominion language. When looking at poverty statistics in the U.S.of A., consider that in America one can be both overweight, have indoor plumbing, and be "poor". How does this affect me personally one might ask. My father grew up with an outhouse, I have a porcelain flush toilet, and if the next generation thinks they need a... Smart Toilet (automatic lid, self sanitizing, and cleans your butt for you)... I'd give 'em a shovel, some lumber and nails, and a bushel of shelled cobs. Sears catalog, maybe... after they used all the cobs.

Healthy choices are increasingly expensive compared to processed mass-produced food. Perhaps a bit of material culture related clarification... The Sears catalog was free, and toilet paper was an expenditure many could not afford. Newspapers were another cost-effective alternative. Prior to that, there were corn cobs. It was my father that transitioned to porcelain. Point being... nothing to do with effeminate... sanitary plumbing is a blessing. And a luxury... Great grandpa had none. Outhouse, and he thought nothing of it. Stinking hot, stinking cold, stinking flies. Just plain stinkin'. Don't forget to bang on the seat to drive off the black widows or brown recluse. Take a lantern at night. But hey, if you need a smart toilet, and would rather spend a few thousand bucks on that instead of an ordinary porcelain throne of contemplation, it's your money. The internet does not factor in this context. As for the "children of the internet", they will at least have enough real-life skills to wipe their own bum if the internet goes down.

CHRISTENDOM vs. CHRISTIANITY / ECCLESIA vs. CHURCH Gary DeMar: "Christianity used to be cultural. There was a time when Christians believed that Christianity was transformative...." What was Christendom (Christians dominionizing society on behalf of their King) in early 1600s America has tragically devolved into mere four-walled, stain-glassed, pewtrifying Christianity. It's the difference between ecclesia and church. No one was ever called to church. Christians are called to ecclesia. "...When you hear the word “church,” what comes to mind? For most people, the word “church” means one of two things, depending upon the context: 1) A building they frequent once, twice, or three times a week in which to pray, sing praises, and listen to preaching. 2) The people who allegedly make up the church, aka the body of Christ, who frequent a building known as a church to do the things depicted in Option #1. "What doesn’t come to mind is a community of believers in the fullest sense of the word-a biblical community established, not only on the Word of God, but also on the moral laws of God.14 When obedient to our ecclesia commission, these biblical communities will be established not on the Ten Commandments alone, but upon the Ten Commandments and their respective statutes explaining the Ten Commandments and their respective civil judgments enforcing the Ten Commandments and their statutes, adjudicated by biblically qualified men of God who are a continual blessing to the righteous and a perpetual terror to the wicked, per Exodus 18:21, Deuteronomy 4:5-8, Psalm 19:7-11, Romans 13:1-7,15 etc. "There is not a living person today who hears the word “church” and thinks of what’s depicted in the paragraph above. And yet this description represents the true meaning of the Greek word ecclesia, which has been tragically translated “church.” "With that, it should be obvious how the word “church” has contributed to the defeat of Christendom-that is, Christians dominionizing society on behalf of their King. Just think what America would look like today if instead we were ecclesias (fully-developed Christian communities) rather than merely street-corner churches...." A biblical ecclesia is what the Apostle Paul depicts in Romans 13:1-7. There are a plethora of passages (Exodus 1, Judges 6, Acts 4 & 5, 17:6-7, etc.) that dictate Christians reject any government mandate requiring them to disobey their Lord and King. Romans 13 is not one of them. Romans 13:1-7 has absolutely nothing to do with secular civil government. Rather everything therein depicts a biblical civil government, making it our commission for dominion over government and society. The one word "continually" or "devoted" (depending upon your Bible version) in Verse 6 (amplifying Verses 3 & 4) alone proves the point. And it's just one of ten contextual reasons proving the same thing. Unless someone's prepared to claim the Roman Empire (one of the most notorious for murdering Christians) was a government that *continually* blessed Christians and terrorized/punished the wicked, they best rethink their theology regarding this extremely important passage of Scripture. See free online book "The Romans 13 Template for Biblical Dominion: Ten Reasons Why Romans 13 is Not About Secular Government" at Bible versus Constitution dot org. Historic reformed is an amalgamation of post and a-mil (which is a variety of post-mil, although a post-mil would disagree). That's not to say that classic pre-mil position didn't have a place. In the final analysis, though, when Jesus says He has all authority in heaven and earth, I believe Him. So, the pertinent distinction would seem to be between power and authority, and not between eschatological views. We should be able to set-aside most eschatology debates and focus on the key assignment without distraction, just as Rutherford and his compatriots did.

This enables them to make high profits at the expense of consumers and workers. We see this in Amazon, Comcast, Disney, Fox, Paramount, Sony et al. “Equality of outcome would be to reward evil and punish good”… i mean really… do you really think the current distribution of wealth in America (700 billionaires, 40 million in poverty) reflects the distribution of good and evil?? “A worker is worthy of his wages” - Capitalism rewards the business-owner who can manufacture as cheaply as possible, who can prevent their workers unionising, and sweatshop conditions at home (Amazon warehouse) and actual sweatshops abroad (fast fashion) are a direct result of this godly institution.

@@aallen5256 If the driver at Uber doesn't like his job he can go find a different job, possibly in a different field. If Uber abuses its power too much, it gets kicked out. And it's not like Uber doesn't have competitors. A monopsony (a single-buyer system) does not exist for low-skill labor. Monopsonies are almost entirely a government problem. If you mean monopolies, capitalism tends to destroy monopolies; the ones it creates tend to be monopolies of merit (Standard Oil was one such- prices went up when it got broken apart). Even those tend to break fairly quickly due to man's fallibility or a new invention or such like. On the other hand, government intervention has a habit of creating monopolies by the score. Probably not (though wealth inequality is not an indication of injustice- in absolute terms, America's poor are quite well off compared to most other nations), but America isn't a capitalist nation. It's under a system of socialist crony capitalism. And of course capitalism isn't perfect. Moral buyers would solve the problem. And I don't recall socialist countries being particularly lovely places to work, at least not the ones that aren't coasting on cultural capital (Europe). Furthermore, the verse doesn't just apply to the laborer- it applies to the owner as well. What system do you propose to replace capitalism?

I appreciate Wilson and his boldness. He's a true soldier for Jesus. This analysis unfortunately has 2 obvious flaws that don't allow Wilson to see the full picture of who's actually fighting. 1. He spends little time talking about group 2 on his list. Not sure why, but what is very clear is that he doesn't give them NEARLY enough credit. I knew very few dispensationalists who are escapists. A real understanding of that position would come with it an understanding that escapism is actually in conflict with the idea. 2. With that, he praises group 3 in a way that exposes the smugness often present in reformed circles. Unfortunately that smugness prevents a clear eye on what other believers are doing in the fight. For example, he gives McArthur some credit for fighting but doesn't see how that fighting isn't McArthur briefly foraying into group 3 but is firmly tied to his dispensationalism. Love the guy but Wilson's analysis was lacking and he's missing half the army standing right next to him thinking he's almost alone swinging the axe.

If we can maintain that power can occur without authority (which is self-evident), the only thing that remains is to disciple as much. I wish he'd put that eschatology business on the back burner. I really don't think it's necessary.

Sorry Doug, but your "Reformed" eschatology may not be correct either.

Evangelical means speaking God's word to those who don't know God. Period.
