Mind the Game Pod w/ LeBron James and JJ Redick

Ай бұрын

Welcome to Episode 5 of Mind the Game with LeBron James (The Los Angeles Lakers) and JJ Redick, where we talk all things NBA Playoffs and welcome in LeBron's high school coach, Keith Dambrot. Our full episodes are available on KZbin, Spotify, Apple and wherever you get your podcasts. First, we open with JJ's brief explanation of concepts like Icing, Top-Locking and Motion Offense. Then LeBron and JJ open up about the difference between regular season basketball and playoff basketball. JJ asks LeBron about his first ever playoff game with the Cavs (Cleveland Cavaliers) and his big game winner in 2009 against the Orlando Magic. Then the guys talk about the mental toll of a 7 game playoff series and JJ highlights some of his own mental mistakes in the playoffs. We also have a deep discussion about the role of luck or chance in the playoffs and talk about THE SHOT from Ray Allen in the 2013 NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and the San Antonio Spurs. Then we bring in LeBron's high school coach, Keith Dambrot to talk about what it was like to coach LeBron at such a young age. Keith provides wisdom for all coaches at any level about working with stars, role players and more. This is a special one so let's get to it!
Subscribe to Mind the Game with LeBron James and JJ Redick today for more NBA insight, analysis, highlights and more.

I started watching basketball in the pandemic season when Lebron won the title with the Lakers. Over the past few years my love for the sport has grown. My country does not have basketball courts commonly but still I do love learning about the sport a lot while simultaneously enjoying what analysts had to say. I really loved seeing JJ talk on espn and religiously listen to his podcasts. But this podcast has completely blown everything out the park and made me wanna actually start playing. Thank you to Lebron and JJ for making this happen. Love from Pakistan

This is not hyperbole; This podcast RENEWED my interest in watching basketball. I'm one of those people that DO NOT enjoy the way the game is being played right now. I prefer the game of the 90s and 2000s when the game was more physical. JJ Reddick and Gilbert Arenas have been championing the high skill level of today's NBA players, compared to previous generations, as an explanation for the high scoring and difficulties in defending in today's game. This podcast has allowed me to see basketball in a way I never had before and I find myself enoying the game a lot more now. I feel dumb saying this but I never thought that this much planning/execution has happening on every play. I still prefer the NBA from 20-30 years ago but at least I'm actually wathing basketball again. And I'm grateful for that.

The guys today has way more options when it comes to offense. People always say guys today don’t play defense but if most of them watch this podcast. They will learn that’ it’s much more to it than they think.
@BlakeC552
@BlakeC552 Ай бұрын
When you learn to understand the game and see what’s going on it starts to make sense that teams and players score more and easier. There’s only so many plays out there. There’s only so many ways to defend a play. Coaches have seen these a million times so they have counters for everything now. Almost nothing is new. It takes time to get ahead. Right now the offensive game(thanks in part to rules) is just ahead of the game defensively. There’s no good way really to defend anymore. You can’t leave guys wide open. You can’t guard these elite scorers 1 on 1. It’s just tough.
@staywoke9172

Many athletes who have competed at the college or professional level will tell you being on a sports team is not about the sport. It’s about life, and the sport is just an outlet for stress. @markdorsey5150 because most other sports are "win or go home" for every game. That's what makes the playin so interesting, Detroit could beat Boston on a random mondey, and if that game decides the title, then Detroit are champions. And you can afford to make a few mistakes in a 7 game series and still win the title NFL, Tennis, FIBA/FIFA/RUGBY World Cups all come down to a single game All motorsports can come down to a single development mistake, and your car/bike won't win for a full season. I'm not saying the NBA title is easy, it's very difficult, but just not close to the most difficult. In my opinion at least
@MarcusTheJR

@Podrick- a 7 game series, guarantees the best team always wins. Many Superbowl teams weren't better than the losing team. The 2007 Giants, for example. The same goes for NHL and MLB. The best team always wins. You have time to fix mistakes and adjust to make sure the best always wins. Imagine one bad night, and the other team has the trophy. They weren't better than you, just caught you on a bad night

As a middle and high school basketball coach, what Coach Dambrot said at the end needs a whole discussion in its own: "You're going to hit some rough moments, but you gotta battle through... These young people need advice as to how to handle adversity, because what happens a lot of times is they get bailed out of adversity now. Nobody really teaches them what to do when they hit it, because we’ve all been there… Just when you think things are going great, something happens, and if you don’t know how to handle it, it’s really difficult.” - Coach Keith Dambrot Too often am I seeing kids who are so used to things being done for them, things going their way, them not being able to handle adversity on and off the basketball court. This is a great message for coaches, but an even BETTER message for parents and leaders of young minds. Thank you Coach.
