They are too scared of doing it because of what happened to SMU for 3-4 decades after it

I think it was due to the Southwest Conference folding. They're afraid of that happening to other conferences especially their precious SEC.

@@johngonzalez6690 could you imagine the uproar if an SEC school got the death penalty? ESPN and CBS would be scared shitless.

The Death Panalty is defcom five for the NCAA. The reason that it has only been used once was because what SMU did was so outrageous they had no choice. However, the one thing that keeps them from using it is not only will it effect the school put on it but the other universities in a particular conference. In fact, many people blame SMU getting put to death for the demise of the Southwest Conference twelve years later.

Probably. The Southwest and Big 8 being separate was so much fun. All the Texas schools (not including Arkansas since they went SEC) battaling for bragging rights was so cool. Houston, SMU, and Rice were actually competitive against Texas and AM. Such a fun time

After Penn State didn't get the death penalty. I'm convinced it will never be used again! After what happened at SMU 25 years ago. It had a much bigger impact they could've ever thought possible!

I dont advocate for the Death Penalty often but Colin is 150% right here. Baylor literally allowed and dismissed rape just to win. That said Penn State didn't get it for Sandusky.... so it's hard to give a school that now when that one got by. But both of those cases, perfect examples of justification for the Death Penalty.

OU is so much better than Baylor when it comes to these types of causes.

The Death Penalty only serves to punish current and future athletes there who had nothing to do with the crimes. It does virtually nothing to punish those actually responsible. The equivalent of arresting the whole neighborhood for a single person stealing a rake.

The same people who try and say Briles was only there to win football games and excuse him purposely overlooking character concerns and red flags... Probably don't realize that essentially they have no problem with Briles for all intents and purposes, making women on campus potential prey by ignoring character concerns so he could get the players in question. I wonder if they would be fine with their daughters going to Baylor and becoming potential prey if they knew about Briles...

What is this whole SMU death penalty thing can someone plz explain
@martinkorlie

Showtime_Kick123 Basically a lot of colleges at the time were using a lot of illegal practices to recruit players ( i.e paying them to play for them). Smu was the only one that got caught doing this and the Ncaa decided to make an example of them by banning them from all football activities for 1 year, from playing football to using their tranning facilities. The effects were so bad that they couldn't field a football team for two more years after the ban. 3/4 of the players transfered. SMU used to be a football powerhouse, competing with the likes of Texas and Oklahoma. But after the ban SMU did recover but never again to it's former glory. ( look up it's recent seasons). Seeing the effects of it's ban, the NCAA now seldom uses the penalty, even for the worst cases.

No, the Death Penalty was created to curb what was happening at SMU, Texas A&M and some other Southwest Conference teams in the 1980’s. And they realized it was like a nuclear bomb, and will hopefully never have to issue it again. It took SMU over 20 years to even get to and win a bowl game again.
