I can't believe how much this review mirrors my own experience. I remember buying NFSSE when I was 12 years old at Costco, when we too did not have a PC with a fast enough processor (or a CD-ROM drive). I also remember staring at the back of the box so excited to play it. I begged my dad for a new computer, and behold for my birthday that year, a new computer with a Pentium processor at 133mhz showed up. Still one of my favorite games as a kid.

This takes me back. Not because I played the NFS games, but because it takes me back to that special time when you're a kid and you don't know the limits of a video game, it feels like this magical, open-ended world where everything can happen. Back in grade school, me and my best friends would swap stories about all the cool things we did in video games. Good times.

I remember playing this on an old packard bell. My brother and I would alternate trying to beat each others lap times. Was also the first time I used a racing wheel. The first time I actually played it was at a Playstation demo kiosk at a hills department store. It amazed me. Ill always consider this the best NFS game, no bells and whistles, just fun racing.

It was really awesome to hear you mention Jeff van Dyck and Saki Kaskas. These two guys put together explosive soundtracks for numerous games in the mid to late 90s, and more people should know who they are. They created music so amazing that I would sometimes just sit back and listen to playback during menu screens rather than fire up my next hockey game.

Man, this brings back memories. i LOVED this game. I had it on the Panasonic 3DO in my mid-late teens, and i could race my buddies on my 27" Zenith tube TV. This was the game that introduced me to cars i had never heard of back in the 90s. The NSX, Supra and the RX7. The point to point highway racing in traffic was bloody awesome. In the end my favorite car was the NSX and the 911 second. My buddy always made us race two 911's. God, great memories.

I never got around to try the Special Edition so some of this stuff surprised me, from the mods to the exclusive car and tracks, but the vanilla The Need For Speed was also my very first purchased CD-ROM game, at a time when my computer could barely play the FMVs without slowing down. The installation itself was mindblowing to me back then. Great stuff Clint!

Oh man.....watching this video of these racetracks and cars is bringing SO many memories for me right now. I'm feeling very nostalgic and getting misty eyed. I used to race the Viper on Alpine (I think). I would drive that car so fast down an open stretch of road and purposefully slam the Viper into an oncoming vehicle!! I loved the sound of the metal scraping against the concrete and hearing the glass shatter in the windshield!! Such good times back then!! I played in Knockout mode and the Tournaments to unlock the special tracks!! It was very stressful and I had to play over and over and over again until I finally won!! I would love to be able to play these on a modern computer with the right equipment. I had the first 3 or 4 NFS games, I had Driver and Driver 2, I had all the Crash Bandicoot games and I also had Road Rash and Road Rash 2. All of those games played on the Sony Playstation 1. I forgot what the graphics looked like from these NFS games. I have been so used to seeing these modern games with impeccable graphics and then to see the graphics from NFS was such a shock to the system!!!! Great review on this game. Wish I could play it again!!!

Never played the first, only had NFS2 special edition. Amazing game and i really miss the old Need for Speed games. I miss the creative maps, i miss that didn't finish a race within 3 minutes (as with the later hot prusuit games), i miss that it had shiny cars but didn't take itself to serious, and holy crap do i miss NOT HAVING A GENERIC CRAPPY STORY JUST LET ME DRIVE ALREADY GJEEES. EA is EA so we will never see the fun Need for Speed games back anymore, now it all has to be super shiny and way to serious, yet having stupid stories cause the people in suits hear that RPGs with stories sell well so hell they want a story in their racer cause if race fans like one thing it's a story about some wanna be street racer and all the super models and gansta rappers he meets on his road to become the best driver ever...yeah...way more fun then playing tag in splitscreen race mode (yeah me and my friends did that, playing tags with cars).

For me, it's weird and awesome at the same the fact that my experience with this game almost equals yours, Clint. As was the case with Phantasmagoria, a game in which I spent so much time just looking at those 7 (SEVEN!!) cds, reading the manual, taking care of the box and imagining how cool it would be to play it at night, I bought NFSSE before upgrading my computer with a multimedia kit back in 1996. It was worth the wait for the two games because they ultimately have a special place in my heart. It's very interesting to notice that some people, living in different parts of the world, happen to share similar emotional memories of a particular thing. The Need for Speed Special Edition still is my favorite racing game. I gotta try to run it in Windows 10 now. I also have NFS2SE, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the original. I'm looking forward the next video you've just announced. Thank you very much for this great trip down memory lane, Clint! Take care.

I wish I had known about the extra car and levels when I was younger! My dumb dog thought the CD was a tasty snack and I haven't been able to properly play it since. (For those of you wondering, yes my dog is okay, and he wasn't in any pain.)

I never played this one but seeing that track editor makes me wish i did. Looking back, I have fond memories of NFS 3. The music, the tracks and the 2 player cops vs drivers split screen mode I used to play with my sisters were memorable. Not to mention the menu, especially the car showcase which I barely understood at the time. That was amazing. Thanks for reviving such great memories.

To this day, every NFS fan has screamed for segmented tracks to be put back in the game, something that EA has refused to listen to and implement.

Great review! Very good memories. I too got the game before we had a decent pc. Played it at a friend's house before we got an IBM Aptiva that could finally play it. My favourite part were the car stats and videos. I've still got a cd rom with mods/tracks/savegames on it, it was a retail cd. Thx for this video, made my day.

ah, EA back then used to bring out excellent titles every single time. now when i hear about EA i cringe. things sure changed in the past 20 years huh oh and by the way Clint, you should totally make vids about the first three grand theft auto games (Grand Theft Auto, GTA London and gta2) people today tend to forget where grand theft auto really started off from... (including R* games sadly) and besides, it would be nice to hear your thoughts about how you've seen the franchise in its earliest days. i know i spent more hours playing the first grand theft auto than the hours i spent playing GTA4 and GTA5 combined (a number which is probably at around 1200 hours total, which then again is nearly nothing compared to my entire playtime on San Andreas which is probably easily over 10,000 hours - i was so addicted to that game it was basically the only thing i've played every day for a period of nearly two years lol)

Loved that game, i remember it also had poor physics. On the forest track with the bridge i ran into a car before proceeding over the bridge, i looked in the rear view mirror and i saw the car i ran into doing a pirouette on its front. Crashed a few seconds later because i was laughing so hard :o)

The Supra was totally broken in the game. Completely outclassed other C-Class cars, and could square up with other B-Class cars. The only ones that outclassed the Supra were the A-Class cars, and the Dodge Viper to a certain extent.
