Dickering about the use of the word evil serves no purpose here. If the word evil is able to mean anything then it must surely apply to rapists, murderers and kidnappers. Evil as a concept is appropriate in this context because we're talking about the neurological basis of what we take to be moral or immoral acts.

Cause of behavior is difficult to determine by viewing brain activity. It's obvious that someone not experiencing empathy would show a brain not experiencing empathy. And the nature and source of consciousness is still pretty much unknown to scientists. Some think the brain is a receiver of consciousness not the producer of it at all.

If evil is based on predisposition and predisposition is genetically caused, and the science of biology tells us that genetic is beyond ones control. It, therefore, means that the act of evil, or some evil, is beyond a person control. This is in conflict with our religious beliefs, as well as our justice system. It is as if it's telling us that they're not responsible for their act of violence. This is hard for me to swallow.

No, not necessarily. Many are very self involved. And this would get in the way of as you call it 'logical decision making.' Plus logical does not mean moral or ethical, or necessarily even being a good leader. Also, arguably, as we are often guided by our emotions, it's relatively impossible to be 'logical' in decision making. Each of us are guided by our emotions and internal moral compass to make decisions, whether we're consciously aware of it or not.
@hkmorhsi
@hkmorhsi 2 жыл бұрын
You really can't think of a single example where your emotions are actually useful, and sometimes more than your "logic", your limbic system is also part of your brain. If your heartbeat, hunger, stress etc were consciously regulated, would you life be easier? Also you do realize that there is no one who isnt guided by their emotions, psychopaths have one or very few left and those are linked to their ego and need for superiority (killing, torturing, tormenting... if thats not emotionall LMFAO)

No. Psychopaths are " emotional people" They are anger & revenge magnets. Anger to them is like air. can't live without anger & drama in a day. A day without a fight is boring to them. Psychopaths are impulsive, easily offended + no regard to rules combo. Once angry, they will identify the person as an enemy & fight regardless if its is a parent or a friend. Once they " finished" being angry they turn into " charming version" & says sorry (this is a manipulation) These people will not sleep until they get their revenge.

So let me get this straight....The abnormal part is that the "breaks" aren't there or don't work, so the psychopath can't put the breaks on the impulse to kidnap kids...But having that impulse, that's normal?

It's perfectly normal to have all kinds of impulses and thoughts. Thinking of killing someone is not the same as doing it, and suddenly having the impulse to strike or kidnap or in another way hurt a child is not the same as doing it either. As we are animals we will have all kinds of thoughts and impulses that will contradict our culture, that's the struggle and at the same time the benefit of living in a society, it inhibits in order to protect.

What about when messages are functioning correctly and yet people still go ahead and act out on these awful crimes. This then makes the person with the supposedly normal functioning brain a hell of a lot worse than say a psychopath who doesn't have the capacity to stop these thought processes. Also, how is group therapy going to help psychopathy if the brain is challenged against certain emotions.
@metanumia
@metanumia 6 жыл бұрын
Therapy of all kinds scientifically proven to help psychopathy/sociopathy influences and shapes brain structure and function because the human brain is physically malleable even into old age. Neuroplasticity and epigenetic changes to coding DNA result from cognitive behavioral therapy and placement into the right type of environment. However, this therapy is especially difficult when started later in life, but it can be used to help reduce problematic behavior patterns and thoughts. It just needs to be intensive and in some cases mandatory and enforced. Also, anyone who was raised in a healthy, peaceful, non-violent society and develops a neurotypical brain that allows for successful integration into society won't go and "act out on these awful crimes" as you postulated. When persistent childhood stress and traumatic experiences influence brain development and result in violent/anti-social behaviors, or when a child is born with abnormal frontal lobe to limbic system connectivity/functionality/regulation that isn't later corrected through treatment, the result is *not* a neurotypical brain, rather if that child goes on to carry out remorseless acts of violence/anti-social behaviors that cause significant harm to others, then that's a psychopath, and brain "messages" are not "functioning correctly". A neurotypical person, who developed successfully/normally in society enough to live a peaceful, productive life, can sometimes be exposed to sociocultural messaging and environments that shape their brain in such a way as to decouple their behavior-regulating, decision-making, executive neurons in the pre-frontal cortex from their limbic system (among other changes to complex neural pathways) in specific situations. For example, U.S. soldiers in Vietnam who carried out the Mai-Lai Massacre after successfully integrating into society and following rules prior to the incident, or the Stanford Prison experiment guards, or German SS and Wehrmacht soldiers who didn't try to stop the genocide of innocent civilians. These are examples of situational sociopathy, and it can happen to otherwise "normal", socially-integrated, adults if they go down a certain path of events and social changes. In basic terms, psychopaths start off with unhealthy brain functionality, and sociopaths are "made" from typical individuals in certain social situations (like being part of the military in Nazi Germany).
@hkmorhsi
@hkmorhsi 2 жыл бұрын
@@metanumia no it's not just a story of neuroplasticity, because it's not just a cortical/pattern/cognitive thing, the amygdala and the limbic system is subconscious, and its what creates your behavior in the first place. you can't use neuroplasticity to change someone who haves almost no amygdala activity. Cognitive therapy is just that, cognitive, its about making people consciously limit their behavior, which is of course not successful in most, because behavior isnt cognitive....

We know the parts of the human brain and its chemistry with the electrical input that causes our behavior, yet it does not match the other animal behaviors, like deer testosterone levels causing aggression. so we are still at the model T stage with neuro-biology. We must compare the brain chemistry of other animals if we wish to find cures that are possible, if we open our minds and do real research, without outside contamination from special interest groups.
