Make a charity stream of cliff just reading the story. Making it slightly different enunciation in each iteration maybe a missed or added word or 2 but that doesn't change the story. (like using the word "asked" instead of "commanded" or dropping the number "108"), or maybe just surprise people with a new language. For an entire hour or so while Numberphile fans donate to Charity. Of course lets not torture Cliff and give him a break every now and again but when he returns he continues from where he left off.

Twenty five years ago, whilst at college, I read half of a book called The Cuckoo's Egg by Clifford Stoll. I always meant to go back to it but never did. J Chen It's nice that someone tries to speak someone else's language. It shows respect for the people who speak it. I'm from a bilingual country and though the vast majority speak English fluently, some incomers have a go at learning the national language, if only a bit. We don't mind if they trip up, they *tried*, and that means a lot. I'm glad you feel that way. I've never tried to learn any Chinese language. Not out of disrespect but terror! I'm sticking to boring old European languages instead ;-)

the bilingual story is as recursive as the original one. and although it can be _generated_ by iteration, the _story_ itself is recursive, because it describes concatenated events (each iteration of the text corresponds to a deeper level of the story). i think this was just cliffs excuse to speak chinese. ;)

This reminds me of a nursery story that my parents and grandparents would tell me until I fall asleep. John Barth's "short" story Frame-Tale (from the collection Lost in the Funhouse, published 1968) is on a Möbius strip. He includes instructions on how to cut it from the page and assemble it. It reads "Once upon a time there was a story that began Once upon a time there...". You get the idea.

From programmer's point of view, swapping languages does note make it any more recursive. If you want a story that can not be expressed in a loop you have to branch it. For example: *Story* Once upon a time 108 rebels gathered by the lakeside. And he captain started a story: "... The rebels were attacked this night and all of them got killed but one got away. He came back to his family and told them this story: "... Insert a full story insead each "...". This can not be expicitly expressed in a loop and reqieres some form of recursion because the story includes itself twice. Classical recursive stories like one in the video however can because they have tail call recursion (it loops on itself once, and it's the last thing it does). To show it's not a normal loop let's expand the story (insert itself instead of every...) once: *Story* Once upon a time 108 rebels gathered by the lakeside. And he captain started a story: "Once upon a time 108 rebels gathered by the lakeside. And he captain started a story: "... The rebels were attacked this night and all of them got killed but one got away. He came back to his family and told them this story: "...
