Like the subtle juxtaposition of this sponsor with this show!! Based on what I saw in comments to Ms Banner's vid, using a VPN may be a useful side-route to access for this show, depending on what region you're in & how it's being aired in your country? 😉 (Gosh, wish we could just already be over this thing of DVD region restrictions, ebook DRM, international content-distribution wrangles & airing shows only on pay-per-view channels etc... 😣)

Your tangent on Frenchifying names just reminded me of that Friends episode when Monica and Phoebe spent all afternoon trying to recreate Pheobe’s grandmother’s secret cookie recipe from frozen cookie dough and Joey comes by and eats it all. They were so distraught and Phoebe mentions that her grandmother got the the recipe from her grandmother in France: “Neslay Tooloze.” Monica stares at Phoebe in disbelief. “Nesle Tollhouse?” Phoebe says, “No,” and emphasizes Neslay Tooloze in a very French accent. Monica opens her kitchen cupboard, grabs a bag of chocolate chips, and throws it at Phoebe. “Is this the recipe?”

I “almost” didn’t watch it because of Whedon...not just because of his problematic reputation, but because of his penchant for killing off main characters and/or loved characters. That being said, I did watch, and am hooked HARD. Not gonna lie, though, I’m happy he’s stepped away from it. The costuming is freakin’ AMAZING!!! And that split skirt...I made the hubs pause and back up so many times! I knew the faux girdle wasn’t period, but I’m so here for it! Thank you for the deep dive. By the problematic reputation theory, no one should ever watch Hitchcock movies or sports or _Smallville,_ and _Full House_ etc. The list goes on and on. Separating the person from their job/craft is really the only way to enjoy the entertainment value of what they created.
@monmothma33582 жыл бұрын
@@Buffy8Fan Yeah... I agree. People are a mix of good and bad sides. Not to trivialize what Joss Whedon did - I was a huge fan, and my heart broke when all that BTS stuff came out. I don't like mob mentality or when people take allegations as fact (investigations are there for a reason, and false allegations exist), but in Whedon's case there were just to many people who had the same story. I had to realize it was true. But hey, at least Whedon, Hitchcock etc, contributed something good too, right? I think that's they way to take it. We don't condone their bad deeds by enjoying their art.

On the Whedon issue, for all his personal faults & entirely unacceptable behaviour it has to be said that he knows his trade & has turned out some of my favourite shows over the years. Indeed its some what sad that because his personal faults & entirely unacceptable behaviour he won't be making any more. Can't comment on the costume beyond pointing out the old saw that clothing & gear earlier than the period is fine its just latter that's not, clothing and cloth where expensive & hand me downs where quite a thing even as late as my youth.

Ok, this show looks amazing, and now both you and Bernadette have recommended it, so I will definitely have to watch it. I am 100% sci-fi steampunk trash so I'm sure I'll enjoy it. I absolutely adore the amount of intense nerdery in this video, if you ever stopped doing niche historical deep dives I would be heartbroken! Also THANK YOU for the links to all those Delineator magazines! I'm about to start working on a Victorian Star Trek uniform cosplay, and I'm intending to use the Truly Victorian 1898 eton jacket pattern, so these are going to be SO helpful to figure out exactly what style and decoration I want. Of course there will have to be some deviations, not sure they went in for two tone jackets in the 1890s lol :-D I know your Lady costume is based on one of your antiques, but are there any patterns in the 1897 Delineators that are similiar, or that you've used as inspiration? Very much looking forward to the next installment of that! EDIT: OMG I hadn't realised how *chonky* those magazines were, I'm now even more impressed over how much stuff you looked through to research this video. I'm thinking this future jacket of mine may need some of this military inspired braid I keep seeing, it fits the context I'm making it for and it's super pretty. I'm also now having a giggle over the incredibly snooty Quaker Oats advert on page 256 of the January-March 1898 edition, so thank you for that.
@AbbyCox3 жыл бұрын
I'm using that purple bodice in this video for my Lady cosplay, and honestly, it's soooooo 1897 that there are loads of bodices that are close matches to it. I've used Margaret Blair for the bodice drafting, and then am going to use the antique for trimming and construction guidance.

I'm so glad I started following your channel a little while back. Though I'm not an expert in historical clothing (I can at least look at a piece and determine the general point in history it would have been worn), I totally get the almost incessant need to get into the details. Because the details inform much more than a fashion silhouette, or a specific food recipe, or a specific style handle for a weapon. Details speak to the culture and worldview of that specific time and place. It gives historians of all sorts the ability to determine the why and how of the details that speaks to the broader understanding of how people lived. And when we know how people lived within their worldview and circumstance, we realize that people across time are strikingly similar, and not much different at all.
@persiswynter63573 жыл бұрын
LOL! I'm here for the costume nerdery as well! I only caught the first episode (freebie from xfinity), but I loved it! We don't do that today, but apparently the Victorians didn't have time for that. 😃

Great show, as always. I quite agree with your point that just because something does not show up in a fashion book for one year does not mean that people did not wear it. Having lived through the '60's and suffered through watching many attempts by people who were not there do portray us (me being a tie-dyed in the wool hippy) I know that just because something was a few years "dated" does not mean that people (such as me) did not wear it.

Viewing Fashion Historian videos is breaking my wallet! Of course I had to locate my own copy of an historical Delineator magazine to add to my growing fashion/sewing library. Thoroughly enjoyed your video.

While I know you don’t typically check comments past a certain time, I have a rather large stack of early 20c Delineator magazines (the cover of Jan 1912 was so lovely but in poor condition so I framed it & put it on my wall where it is often a source of fascination. Now, thanks to you, I know a bit more about that publication! I’m an estate sale book collector so I don’t typically think about the magazines that I’ve accumulated by happenstance. I just try to keep them in as decent a condition as possible. Thanks for all of your work!

So, my Tudor history nerd heart is so over the moon in love about the Nord VPN thing because there is SO.MUCH. quality content offered in the UK for this topic that never makes it to the US. And my Victorian heart is here for everything else! ;)

Thank you for this dress history dive into late 1890's! I have just spent an *cough* embarrassing amount of time looking at delineator issues. For some time I have been trying to date a shirtwaist that belonged to someone in my family long ago. For a while I thought it might be from mid 1880's but having now spent lots of time peering at little illustrations in 1899 delineators, I think that these match the style more accurately. While I have a fantasy of locating the exact same pattern, I think I will have to be satisfied with close enough :). I will have to check out The Nevers!

Ha, ha! That whistle sound is just like what some of the roving vendors here in the Yucatan use. I had to turn my head and look to see who is hawking something now when I heard it. Surprise, no pedal cart vendors around. Tooot tooot!
