I grabbed a schiit magni 3+ and I see that the magni has a cloudy top end with my setup while the atom amp is extremely detailed and clear but more forward sounding. EVGA Nu audio with Burson V5I OPAMP to schiit/atom to Senn HD650's. Good full sound on the schiit, just packing that oompf at the top end.

a b So you’re saying that there are no real differences in sound between the $100 Heresy and the $400 THX 789 outside of a bit of a speed difference? The soundstage and imaging are the same? The detail retrieval is the same? Dynamics are the same? Just because 2 amps both measure equally well and both sound perfectly clean doesn’t make them equals...unless they are equal in all of those other ways as well...which is hard to believe.

@@edwinramos4910 Sound stage is channel imbalance, dynamics are simply how linear the amp is, and SINAD is cleanness. They are pretty much the same, the only difference is build quality, power, form factor, and feature set. The 789 has more features and inputs, so it still warrants the price.

I made a pretty drastic change in amps. I had been using my Yamaha RX-V571 as both an amp to my Xonor DX PciE and as an AMP/DAC, and I switched to the Heresy. I am using DT-770pro250Ohm, M1060C, M300's, ATH-A700 Art Closed, and they all sound much better through the Heresy. The Yamaha had a warm sound which I really liked, but I get just as much bass now with the XonorDX to Heresy, so I don't miss the warmth. SUPER low noise floor. I can't ever hear it. This also works great compared to my LG V20. The V20 works really well on my easier to drive headphones, but it doesn't sound as good on my 770 pros.

I have the modi 3+ dac / magni heresy stack playing with my X3 coax output with 58x cans. I am in complete ecstacy as I have found "my" perfect sound...blown away. It took a couple of years to find the combo but I achieved it. I honestly think I will stick with this setup until things break hopefully many years from now. All included $600 +/-

@@hy7968 you should. don't forget to look at Schiitt's secondary items(cosmetic faults) to save some money. the link is on the left bottom of their page. the amp will be perfect except for perhaps a scratch here or there but you can save like $20 or $30 bucks. sometimes there is nothing really wrong. Think about buying a personal DAP like the Fiio X1 or X3. They are not expensive on the used market and they are built to last and they have great DACs in them. Save your phone. Of course your budget is everything. have fun.

Just bought the Hersey and Modi 3 based on this review. I am very happy with them. I am not a huge audio guy but man i am starting to be. Main reason i purchased was my HD58x did not get enough power from my phone and computer. Price was reasonable. Now the HD58x sound great much more detail and power. Now i am trying the Free 3 month HD music service on Amazon and its like discovering music all over again. Thanks Josh.

Perfect for my Bedroom system. I have an Asgard 3 with the 4490 AKM DAC board and the Focusrite Scarlett and the MOTU Ultralite mk.4 so I need another headphone amp in my editing bay like a hole in the head, but my bedroom needs a Magni. Which though. Discrete? Op Amp. Hmmm. I had a Magni before and it was meh. But if this is as great as you say and I have the Spark. I was meh on that one too. I may Magni 3+ or the Heresy. I had a fulla 2 once but it came with a terrible noise when moving the volume knob. I sold it since I am in Brazil and returning it wasn't an option. I bought instead a Fiio k5 pro and the build quality is superb. I don't know if I would risk another schiit purchase. Edit: for me it is 100% quality control fail, even if I buy another item and it works it would be 50% failure option.

I have the HD650's right now and I want to use them on my desktop PC. Right now I'm using the Sabaj DA3 as my AMP/DAC. So, I've been curious about headphone amps for a long time. Does anyone have an analogy, or a short explanation of the difference I would experience plugging my headphones into an amp like this vs just my laptop jack? I don't listen to FLAC files, but I do have a decent pair of Senn's HD598s that I've had for over 10 years. I used to use an Astro MixAmp for gaming, and the surround sound enhancement was pretty good. But just for music, how big of a difference does an amp make? Or would I need a set of headphones with bigger drivers to actually notice a difference? Great video!

Concerning the noise heard while maxing the volume with no signal: some op-amps have a muting feature in the absence of signal. I don't know what the Magni Heresy uses but it seems this may be a possibility. Great job! I'm a cheapskate so I like products that are great and cheap. this works like an audio interface (I assume you own or tried one as you play bass/guitar), however this is the amp section of it, your analog signal (guitar input) will be converted into digital and back to analog again = DAC. The main purpose of the heresy or other headphone amplifier is to amplify that signal into your headphones, which is needed if you have high impedance headphones. it will optimize the headphone's capability and performance. .
