If you are buying this is for hunting or pest control go for it. If your buying this for SHTF, save your money, image intensification has gotten much cheaper in the last 2 years. You can buy a PVS14 Gen 3 Autogated white phosphor monocle for under 3K. 3K is alot of money but in a shtf situation you don't want to be beaming IR in every direction you look. Most of you know that. I am saying this for the folks that will be giving the enemy a very bright target that happens to be their head.
@DavidSchwartzjr
@DavidSchwartzjr 6 ай бұрын
Really good point that you bring up regarding the IR beaming constantly from this or any external source. I agree, in SHTF I'd much rather have the real deal, but I do also feel that this gives an advantage in a defensive position. I'd imagine most civilians won't have any source of night vision, and if someone is going to try and be an "operator" clearing houses and going on the offensive in a SHTF, they'd better have the best damn gear available and training to go with it. For me, if the lights go out, I like that this is offering that "something is better than nothing" option. Thanks for the comment, I definitely plan to one day get some really nice NVG devices.

I do agree something is better than nothing. You could set up remote solar powered IR emitters around your perimeter that you intend to survey but again, any one serious is going to be almost invisible to you with a digital IR rig. A PVS 7 is just over 1K and we kicked the shit out of Iraq with those back in the day. If you can acquire it, thermal is best for threat detection and NVG is best for threat identification. With high res thermal you can still only make out shapes and little detail, not enough detail to confirm that its a bad guy or a good guy. The nice thing is that you can detect them from long range, so you know they are there and ID them with NVG when they are close enough. @@DavidSchwartzjr

My IR light is on my rifle. Also, the Nightfox I have can see very clear at night even without IR. It's not NV at that setting, but it's clear than my eyes. With decent judgement these can be very effective for poors. They helped me put away the last group of bad guys before I had to retire. Just my two cents.

I think the most applicable scenario for these is straight up home defense. You know the layout of your house better than anyone else, especially an intruder who’s there for the first time. If you put these on, you have a double advantage. Assuming they don’t have nods on snd see the ir illuminating off your head lol I think this is definitely a good option. Most ppl don’t care to see hundreds of yards out super clearly, as long as you can see your immediate surroundings

I think it’s fantastic for the average dad trying to have the advantage in the dark. Keep it in your get home bag, in the truck or just in the house when something strange pops up at night. No need to go around turning on lights. Will it survive combat or extended SHTF ? Probably not. People don’t know how advantageous it is to own the night. Even with cheap NV.

Digital is definitely getting better, but a con I think should be mentioned when comparing to analog is that the refresh rate of digital can make it tough for some to use while in motion, walking, driving, etc. This same "lag" can create eye strain quicker than analog.
@DavidSchwartzjr
@DavidSchwartzjr 6 ай бұрын
That is really good feedback, when I do my “in use” video I’ll be showing the lag, it seems to only really happen with there’s not enough light and the sensor is adjusting to brighten the image (more grain) but when using the IR (built in or external) I don’t notice much lag personally. There’s noticeable eye strain after hours of use though that is for sure. Thanks for the comment! 😎👍

@@DavidSchwartzjr can't wait to see that part. Definitely hoping that digital continues to improve, at least to have less expensive options for "secondary" purposes. I think balancing refresh rate, gain, sensor size, etc. will continue to be a challenge, but if the market demands it, we may get there.

Completely fair and I agree. That being said, if it's a choice between this and no night vision at all because a PVS14 is too expensive to justify on the budget, I'll take this.

Yeah I will plan to get some footage of this one out and about both in wooded areas and with 850 vs 940 to give a good idea of the performance. I think I’m going to also put an action camera next to it to get a “dark” footage just to show how much of a difference there is.

I don’t see myself being able to drop 3k crisp bills on a set of nvg’s. What I might have in a couple months is an extra Benjamin or two. And if the shtf before I can get ahold of some quality Milspec nods, this setup would 100% be better than the guy who has none at all, and seeing how I literally know NO ONE who has any type of nvg, im pretty sure ill be okay.

940nm only, and an excellent weapons-mounted 940nm light. Love this cheap device. Get me similar in thermal in this price range, and I am all in. And yes, try to find anything I can afford not made in China. Sure, you can get great products for under 3K. Let me know if anyone wants to gift me 3K to buy one. Until then, this was the best I could find for the money. Also, have a ballistic helmet that costs $150. Live within your means, folks. It even has been adjusted for use with the CM-7M mask. Takes some getting used to, and I would not recommend you use it for driving because I know some are thinking about that. Maybe a bike. No matter what, IR or no IR, you are screwed in SHTF coming up against an enemy using thermal. But being realistic how many bad guys are packing good expensive gear? I thought many had Hi-Points? But will do thermal when I can afford it.

@DavidSchwartzjr
@DavidSchwartzjr 5 ай бұрын
According to some of the other comments, it would be like looking at the sun, just a big ass beaming white light, lol. I don't have PVS-14s thought so I'm not sure. Would be an interesting video if someone with them would buy a Prowl and show us how it looks from both devices when looking at the other one while running an IR laser or external IR light device like a PEQ

People talk about lag time, how come none of these units use the same camera systems as used in the fpv racing drones? Lenses aside drone racing have no lag so it is possible, is it a matter of price? Cameras with faster refresh rates are more expensive? Is it a way to keep the poors at a disadvantage vs a military with access to pvs14 and better nvgs?
@HaveYouMetMyFist
@HaveYouMetMyFist 6 ай бұрын
The lower the refresh rate the higher the brightness. Low light cameras achieve the exposure they have by sacrificing refresh rate.

I ended up buying a MDT ELITE MUZZLE BRAKE but i modified it. I drilled 2 holes in the top to stop the muzzle rise. The brake felt great but there was some muzzle rise that i didn't like. Made it hard to see the trace and strike. Once i drilled the holes it was perfect. I can trace the round all the way to the target. I'm shooting a Savage 110 tactical in 6.5 PRC.

Thanks, so only the IR illuminators are built in. The IR Laser featured in this video is a stand alone unit mounted to my AR, as well as a separate IR flashlight that was used in some of the shots. My follow up vid with a field test shows the differences that the external IR light and laser allow with this setup.

@@DavidSchwartzjr So, I can understand this more comprehensively, You don't need anything additional, but it helps as shown in your comparison. NVG's are the one item I know the least about. I have 2 PC's, Suppressors, SBR'S, and had a legal select fire for a bit. I know the military Nodz setups are elite,but also $20K. I'm a civy. I don't need $20K NVG. The cheapest intro I've ever seen was $6K for a Monical, mount and a Peq of some type. I know thats not this, but for the price I'm going to try it. What extra accessories do you have helping it achieve its potential? Brands and part #'s if your able. This was a timely video for me!

That’s actually a really great suggestion for Nightfox. Strangely, the adjustable rail arm mounts are machined from metal but the dovetail is hard abs plastic. I agree a metal one would be ideal since it could be the Achilles heel of the design.

Nothing digital will compare with even a blenished, green gen 2 tube. But I am ery curious about the new offering from Sionyx "opsin' as it could be the first to meet that bill. Bit i doubt it would compete with comparably priced optics with a gen 3 tube or two.

I can't really make the recommendation over one since I have not used the Swift 2 Pro, yet. From having used the original Swift and the Red, I would lean towards this one just for the fact you keep one side of your face open to peripheral vision and to quickly shift from NV to ambient vision in case you're walking up/through rough and uneven terrain.

I in no way mean this in a negative way but I like the way the title of this video and the actual content clash kind of puts me off the video. (I still watched the entire thing and thought it was really good for someone who is actively looking for digital night vision) in the video you talk about resolution and pixels but for someone who wants to get into night vision that probably doesn’t mean a whole lot (for me it doesn’t anyway) I went into this video hoping you might talk about latency I was glad you mentioned the fact that you could turn off the ir light and just use weapons lights.. I was hoping to see how well you can actually move around and track things as they move around you.. not as much about what kind of ports it has..

Yes, this was more of an unboxing and going over the specs but I will do an in depth video soon showing the screen resolution and motion delay/lag in the various settings outdoors in woods/field surroundings. The tl;dnr is with more IR/ambient light the motion is much smoother and clearer. With less the sensor compensates by increasing iso rating and frame rate drops producing some noticeable lag and grainy image. Stay tuned please for that vid!

I was waiting for months to see if this would be better than my top pick for digital night vision brands but it seemed to be more expensive and still inferior to what I am using right now. I am using a 1080p resolution monocular with a circular screen display like the pvs14 and has a good smooth refresh rate and it uses an integrated VCSEL (laser) IR illuminator, which is zoomable, instead of an LED IR illuminator. And it only costs 82 dollars here in my country. Not to mention it is also water resistant unlike this unit. Thank god thats the case or I would be jealous of this 😅

I understand, I should have put in more clips showing it in action but I’m saving that for when I do actual testing out in the woods and open fields. A good example of the difference is the laggy spots are when there is no IR light source like at 1:50 with just the IR laser and the sensor compensating for lack of light, compared to when there is an IR flashlight on at 5:01 (no lag) or 8:24
