It seems a let down for this 2.0L engine to require premium fuel given those output numbers. Almost all manufacturers have the 2.0L turbo engine in their lineup and they usually recommend premium fuel to tap into all the power but you could put regular fuel in for a small decrease.
@stuntmonkey005 ай бұрын
Yeah, especially when then EA888 in the GTi can run on 87. But if you do it's probably pulling timing, so MB probably figures you've got more money and don't care.

My Volvo PHEV 2L 4 cylinder has 312 hp and does require 93 octane. (10 more hp and the same torque as the Mercedes AMG version.) But expensive fuel doesn’t matter much when you only average 8.6 gallons a month to go 900 miles a month. (This engine is loafing most of the time because the first 143 hp I need comes from the battery and electric motor.)

I find that MB is blurring the differences between regular and AMG. It used to be mainly a massive performance difference; now trim level details are mixed between the two. I used to have a 2012 C63 and the AMG differences were very obvious between it and the regular C Class.

Great review and it does look classy. However, GLAs are pretty have a particular pipe/tube that regularly breaks/leaks and is located in an area that is labor intensive to replace - basically not easy on the wallet. So if you lease and/or have extended warranty, go for it unless you have a trustworthy balanced cost effective mechanic outside of the 3 point star dealership. If you finance it, best get rid of it once your warranty is out. Remember, parts are VERY expensive if you have tp pay out of pocket

I recently rented the GLA 250 in Boston and it was a nice and fun small SUV. However, the car had 35k miles and the tires noise was incredible. They look the original tires but makes me wonder if the problem is the tire choice or the insulation. Neither one is acceptable considering the luxury image of Mercedes.

Looks like a decent little crossover, but I don't get the "mild hybrid" powertrain. Doesn't seem overly powerful nor that great on fuel (for a hybrid). What exactly is the "mild hybrid" doing here?
@michaels30035 ай бұрын
Makes it smoother to drive at low speeds. Improves MPG a little bit. Improves acceleration from a stop. I expect this will be a standard feature on most vehicles in the future.
@jeffer11015 ай бұрын
@@michaels3003 The eCVT in my Toyota Hybrid gives me all of that and it gets much better fuel economy. If this had 300 HP or used 6L/100km, I would understand. Instead, it only has 2 more HP than my Toyota and has a considerably more complex and expensive transmission (8 speed DCT). If they wanted to improve low speed driving manners (a common complaint with DCT), they could have used a conventional automatic and saved a fair amount of money, complexity and weight. As it is, I'm not sure why they bothered with the "mild hybrid". It's not really making more power and it's not really that good on gas (premium gas too), so the only thing it really helps is smooth out the DCT characteristics, which they could have avoided if they used a conventional automatic in the first place. Reminds me of the stupid choice Hyundai did putting a DCT in the new Santa Fe (which ended up resulting in them all being recalled due to numerous failures). These brands need to be more intelligent about the choices they make. Just because they can do something, doesn't mean they should. The should think more about the vehicle, the demographic and what people are asking for in certain classes. There's been a lot of strange decisions in the automotive landscape the last few years.
@michaels30035 ай бұрын
@@jeffer1101 , I think the top management is unhappy with depressed stock prices (very low P/Es) and low net profit margins, especially when seeing what Tesla has done. Hence, the large number of changes recently. Also, governments and people now decided to care about the gas mileage, so "old technology" like V6 engines is being phased out. High MPG wasn't a concern several years ago. I don't know why they chose DCT transmissions, but it had to be a reason. A lot of decision making is done in secret, so we will never know. A lot of them are attempts to lower the cost (Ford was unable to ship cars due to shortage of the "blue oval" ornaments made by a supplier - true story). This is a difficult business to be in (expensive materials and labor) and there is the looming competition from China. Allegedly, there is a Chinese curse: May you live in interesting times. We are.
@MrWelfarehater5 ай бұрын
Mild hybrid does a few things. Smoother start stop system, power from stop added to turbo charged small engines, allows accessories to work while your car is turned off during the engine off at a stop start system such as lights and air conditioning, minimal few economy, and the starter and alternator are replaced by the mild hybrid electric motor giving a cleaner area under the hood.

I’d be looking at a Genesis, Lexus, Lincoln and Cadillac… or even a Mazda (premium package level) or maybe even more ‘fully loaded’ regular (American/VW/KIA/Hyundai) CUV. We are after all, talking about over $60,000! (for a low level Mercedes-Benz with an overpriced AMG ‘appearance’ package)… really?? I think the pricing at MB is getting rather cheeky. It would not at all surprise me if an exceptionally high number of them are Lease deals… that has to be their logic. Thanks for the video.

I wonder if Mercedes can fix their terrible reliability on these things. My friend had brake pads replaced - $2,000 for mediocre brakes that last 40,000km. I know I know but Scotty Kilmer did a whole video illustrating how bad the brake design is on Mercedes which are deliberate to wear through pads faster. My issue with Mercedes and some other German brands is that you are often paying double or triple over say a Honda or Toyota and that's fine - you are paying for "luxury" but shouldn't you get EVERYTHING a Toyota and Honda gives you first? Namely reliability. And then for your additional $30,000-$60,000 you ADD handling and power and noise reduction and premium leather etc. I guess that if they did that then they would have a "perfect car". Lexus is probably the closest - it retains reliability and longevity, has a lower cost to repair and maintain than the Germans, and is quiet but has yet to bring the "fun." But let's be honest - SUVs are NOT sport Sedans - none of them are as good at FUN as a Miata - so buy a Miata AND a Subaru Outback or RAV 4 or CRV etc for a bit more than a GLA. Sure you pay a bit more now - but they will last - and retain their value far better and over 7 years you will come out ahead. The Miata is way more fun to drive so you win there - and the Outback is better at utility than the Mercedes so you win there. And you have a second car in case of emergency if one of them winds up in the shop - which will likely be 1/5th as often as Mercedes. I look at this the wrong way - if you have enough money to buy a Mercedes then you have enough money not to worry about replacing $15 parts and paying $2,000. Having money shouldn't mean you are willing to be bent over by the dealer and manufacturer. When I see a Mercedes that logo doesn't impress me - I don't think wow those folks are special. Well, not that kind of special anyway. I think "what a bunch of suckers." It's "pretend rich" or in Canada we'd call them "Posers" - Mercedes, BMW and Audi are not the kind of luxury labels that IMPRESS me. These are dime a dozen in Hong Kong - no if you want to 'impress" people with your luxury (read how much money you have) then wearing a piddly Rolex or driving a piddly Mercedes isn't going to cut it. Drive a Rolls Royce La Rose Noire Droptail. Wear a million-dollar Patek Philippe - say a Sky Moon 988 at the minimum. Mercedes and BMW are all just "meh" - overpriced mediocrity with gimmicky cheap piano plastic - it's all "fake rich" where people have to take out Leases or balloon loans on them. The guys dropping $2 million on a watch here in Hong Kong pay cash - they're not posers. The maid drives a Mercedes.
