One fascinating book I found was Bradshaw's guide to the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. It was last published in the early 1900s but has been reprinted. It gives a good description of each waterway back then, the types of cargo, and details some of the less salubrious waterways. I've always wanted someone to give the Bradshaw's description of a waterway and say, "let's see if it's changed any in 120 years". Lol.

@@neversaydi I'd have to look it up, but there were a few canals that were abandoned even that early. Quite a few canals are listed as owned by railway companies. I assume they were running them down to reduce competition.

I love that you are not part of the norm, even though I know it causes angst in that bankers and the like don't know what to do with you. As someone who has lived consistently outside the norm, if you are able, stick to what you want and wish to do. Life is so often geared to the 'norm' in this life, and those of us that live outside of it have to try to show it is possible to wander another path. PS. There is nothing run-of-the-mill about you. Best wishes
