My parents immigrated from Sweden in 1957 Pippi Longstocking is a Swedish tale and they’d always read to us Pippi stories.

The reason you barely remember this movie might be because it was made in 1988 and you watched it in the 70's , my guess is you watched the original from Sweden.

I was beyond obsessed with this movie when it released; My older sister had shown me the original Swedish film and by the time _The New Adventures_ was released in 1988, I’d watched each of the four Swedish movies so many times I could recite the dialogue and Pippi Longstocking had become the bane of my parents' existence. Though I grew up to make it a paying career years before _RuPaul's Drag Race,_ my mother would find me on more than one occasion with a coat hanger bent over my head, an orange towel twisted over _that,_ and hanging from the garage rafters, a boy of nine years old with a fertile imagination. Ha! I need to confess I actually wrote most of this before I finished much of your video. I have an encyclopedic knowledge of useless information in my mind and I jump at any occasion I can get to put it all to use. Thus, I’d like to apologize in advance that this might be lengthy. Upon watching the remainder of the video, I had to laugh at how closely my narrative here actually followed yours in the video. A few pieces of trivia (and I welcome anybody that wants to correct me): The Captain's House (the actual name of the house used for Villa Villekulla) was actually _not_ dilapidated when it was selected by the film's location scouts. For some strange reason, the producers of the film made the decision to make it look like it hadn't been lived in for years (which was never a detail in the books nor the previous films), but I believe there _was_ a tenant living in it that approved both the painting and weathering of the home before the production restored it to its original condition. Though the yard was much less overgrown as it is now and because the script called for more than a few sequences to be shot in the yard, they also agreed to a complete re-landscaping that removed several large trees, bushes, etc. and erected the picket fence and the gate in the film. Regarding the tree the kids climb in the movie, I’ve heard conflicting accounts regarding whether it was an actual tree or one created specifically for the production. In either case, it’s sadly no longer there. As you mentioned, there is only one door on the side porch. I’ve previously heard that this was the one structural change and that the production requested it at the last minute to add a second entrance for the scenes with Mr. Blackheart entering the home and in which two con-men chase Pippi atop the roof. Unlike the iconic Villa in the Swedish films, the house on Fernandina Beach was only used for exteriors. Perhaps the most memorable scene that justified the amount of landscaping was the "Auto-Gyro" sequence, for which the production also erected a small barn/shed. The most elusive information I've never been able to find is just how exactly this scene was filmed because if you look closely after the wheels leave the ground, it _was_ actually a full-scale model with stunt doubles pedaling for the Settigren children and the figure of Pippi spinning rapidly on a turntable. Most people would assume it was done with a crane, but if you watch carefully, the entire contraption leaves the ground at a rapid speed, and actually dips a few times as it flies over the gathered vehicles and police _in the same shot._ I don’t know that I've ever seen a crane that could accomplish that. If anyone knows otherwise, I'd love to hear any details! Regarding the "Bossy Girl" from the orphanage, that role was written specifically for the actress that plays her. The movie was originally announced as early as 1984 and they spent a considerable length of time searching for the actress that would play the title role. In the end, after auditioning more than 6000 hopeful Pippi's, the casting came down to Tami Erin Klicman and Fay Masterson. Two young girls and they knew one was going to have their heart broken. In the end, Tami was cast in the role, but Ken Annakin really liked Masterson and created the role for her as something of a consolation. Thanks for sharing your travels with those of us that might never have the opportunity. I really enjoyed the video, the walk down memory lane, and the opportunity to share some details, too! Oh - I nearly forgot! MISS MESSERSCHMIDT! What a nightmarish woman! "Pippilotta, if that IS your ridiculous name!"
