I am 43 years old since June. Me and brothers first console a little known 8 bit system called Sega Master System. As a 6 year old , I was play Rambo, Rambo 3 , hang on, Altered Beast, Shinobi ( ninja game). All my friends had a NES. We exchanged systems sometimes because there many exclusive games on each system. By 1991, 1992 , I was the envy with my " 16 Bit " Sega Genesis. 😆😆😆😆. Memories.

I'm a sucker for Atari games and I'm only 29 years old. The reason I'm so fond of these games is because my mother kept her Atari 2600 and shared it with me when I was 3 years old in 1997. It was hooked up to a television set in my sister's room (whom was only an infant at the time), so I feel privileged to have such fondness for a primitive console despite my younger age!

Wow, that's awesome. I tried that with my daughter. Trying to introduce her with old school gaming consoles at a young age, but she wouldn't get into them. I'm 36 and have a lot of nostalgia for the Atari 2600 because my father had one and it was the first console I played video games on. My daughter is 11 and loved our old Atari when she was little (3 or 4). We only ever had 32 in 1 and the Mario Bros cartridge, that's why I only discovered ADVENTURE when the Atari 50 collection was released on Nintendo Switch last year and I loved it without any nostalgia for this specific game. Backwards compatibility was a big thing with the 7800. The internals even have 2600 hardware within it. I'm not sure on the shape of the 5200 cartridges, but the 2600 and 7800 cartridges are near identical in appearance to each other, to the point that a 2600 cartridge can be inserted into a 7800 and *it will boot up.* This thing is basically a 7800 in a 2600 shell! That being said, that Atari 50 collection does have a small handful of 5200 games, with one of them being a port of a 400 game.

The 5200 was a consolised Atari 400 computer with a different controller and cartridge port. The Atari XEGS was a fully compatible consolised Atari 65xe (64k Atari 400) and usually came with an external keyboard. Atari 5200 cartridges don’t fit the same slot. The 7800 was made with backwards compatibility in mind.
@michaelbotting806
@michaelbotting806 Жыл бұрын
A couple of reasons for it not having option for 5200 carts - the 5200 cartridges were larger cartridges - so that would potentially change the appearance of the system - 7800 cartridges are exactly the same size as 2600 carts as the Atari 7800 was backwards compatible with the 2600. The 5200 wasn’t. Also the 5200 had a very weird controller with keyboard layout and card overlays. Which really wouldn’t work with a 2600 controller. Whereas most 7800 games can be played with a 2600 controller
@themidcentrist
@themidcentrist Жыл бұрын
I'm also thinking that the 5200 is much less common than either the 2600 or 7800 and it's not worth it for them to support it. It also has a small library that includes a lot of slightly improved versions of 2600 arcade ports. Plus like you said, the controller would be a problem and it would require it's own cartridge port. I own a 5200 and given the challenges and financials I honestly don't blame them for ignoring it.

I can think of two direct issues with 5200 compatibility. First, the cartridge form factor is different from the 2600 and 7800. But the main issue, I think, is the controller itself. Those non-centering joysticks almost always never work without some extensive repairs. I have six controllers, and all of them are in various states of "working," none of which are 100%, so unless Atari is willing to reissue those controllers, that would be a non-starter (but that said, if they did reissue those, I'd be all over buying a bunch of those). It's still an interesting console, and 7800 compatibility is huge for the fact there's HDMI there. The question I need answers to is if homebrew is generally compatible with this. I have a lot of 2600 and 7800 homebrew games, and I'd want to make sure those work before dropping the cash on this thing, one of which is the amazing "Rikki & Vikki" for the 7800. Given that cartridge's extra hardware, I'm doubting that game would work at all on this thing, but if it does, I'm ready to buy today!

To think that NES has the double-nostalgia effect here for me. I think this is a brilliant idea, and the price point isn't bad. But like you mentioned, the inherent problem is that Atari 2600 games have extremely limited appeal. Only those old enough to remember it and nerds like me who love video game history would have any appreciation for these games whatsoever. Maybe you could convince your average joe to play like 5% of the 2600's lineup, but the overwhelming majority of the games are BARELY games by today's standards. Still this seems like a really smartly executed concept. If Nintendo did this with the NES people would be falling over themselves to get one.

As someone who grew up with the 2600 and then 7800. It’s definitely making me nostalgic. Not sure I would buy. Have a $50 version with 200 games built in. The cartridges aren’t a draw. Still love seeing the console

Yeah I think it's a buy for me! And yes Nintendo needs to make something similar. I grew up more in the 2600 era, but I would also get a Nes re-created

I might be interested in this simply to play the first ever video games I played... I'm 38 too, but my older brothers had an Atari... Pitfall and Pole Position were the first games I played. I'd like to find a couple of those cartridges for this system...

As a person in my early 40s now I remember my uncle having an Atari 2600 and playing Pac-Man again my dad when they were super young. I did play again them and of course got my a** handed to me. I have much love for Atari and it's nice to see them still hanging in there. I would love to see more love for their other consoles also. I own just about all of them including a Jag cd and it's sucks that they won't build and actually gaming console in this day in age. That would be amazing!

I really really liked this look at vid. Immediately I saw your fairness, on a system out of your care about realm. You are one of the few that didn't outright pick on the play list. Even got a chuckle. What got me with this was a hope. Apon it's introduction, it has stronger memory 7800 guts That console was under developed and never used as it had the potential. I think the untested were not done for time restraints. Getting this thing out for 2023 holidays. The draw is more potential. The alluded future of using homebrews peaked my interest immensely. If they don't market that avenue, I truly believe it will sink the fragmented remains of half century blah. You did a wonderful open minded, and very thoughtful assessment. Great job!

exactly, maybe if this was $80, or $90 more people might bite, but as is, it can't even run all 2600, and 7800 games because it's using poor emulation.

You don't have to be 40+ to know the 2600 or have even owned one, I'm 5 years younger than you and I had one growing up; Air raid, dragster, pole position and frogger were my top games for it.

Im 55.. i grew up with the 2600 in the 70s and 80s... and yes, Atari is targeting ME. TAKE MY MONEY! As to the 5200... No, it is NOT a weird omission at all if you know what the 5200 is/was. 1) the 5200 uses a completely different size of cartridges, not same as 2600 or 7800. 2) the 5200 uses a completely different joystick than the 2600 3) the port requirements for the 5200 joystick is completely different than the 2600. If you INCLUDED 5200 support on the 2600+, it would require significant hardware changes, including two cartridge inputs, four different joystick inputs, require at least one or more extra joysticks included and would jack the price to double or more what it currently sells for. So to say "its a weird omission"... no itsnit, not if you understand the differences which are significant.

For people who love Atari, this is a win. It's nice when a company puts out a product for that market even if it's not the biggest market. Older games should have options too. People say, Nintendo just goes and does their thing and it's fine and cool. When an other company does it, it's stupid and weird and "who is this for?" kind of thing. Happy to see RGT85 not poo poo on this even if it's not really geared towards him. A NES version of this would be cool as well, but I can't see Nintendo doing that any time soon.

I'm playing video games since the 80s. You can't get that unique old-school atmosphere/vibe when you play classic games on HD TVs. You HAVE to play it on a classic Sony Trinitron CRT with the original hardware. Only those who experienced the old prime time of video games know what I'm talking about. Forget HD and all these new toys, get a real old video game console with some cool games, sit down in front of a good CRT TV, sit in the armchair and you will have the best and ultimate video game experience. What many people don't know either: Today's resolutions are much sharper than the actual reality, that's not good for the eyes and that's also the reason why everyone needs glasses today. Look at Twitch, all the streamers who started out not wearing glasses need glasses after 2-3 years.
