I am onboard with you on the thought I will never have one of these, but you don't get it? That Citizen is celebrating their 100th anniversary and have made a celebratory piece and is only making 100 of them? The price they are charging is irrelevant. Do you think the vast majority of the 100 made are even leaving Japan? We won't see these on Amazon (LOL) or any watch-specific web site. These are for the higher ups at Citizen and their close friends (other top Japanese business leaders) and family. These aren't made for *us* - the collectors, the fans, etc. This is just a vanity project and a cool nod to their heritage and history. Plus it serves as a marketing point to get us all interested in their brand. You know that sooner or later someone else will make a homage version of this and we all will get to have our new bright and shiny pocket watch at a (hopefully) reasonable price. Until then, we can always watch their video and hope the president can learn to more convincingly walk in place while pretending to move. LOL 😉

This reminds me of Hamilton's recent re-issue of a limited-edition pocket watch, but the problem is that it didn't quite have the same aesthetic appeal as its older pocket watches. And the price point was also insane, given that it was a standard ETA movement (I believe). I'm with you Patrick - for that price point, I'd rather by 10-15 antique collectible ones!
@PocketWatchTime8 ай бұрын
I found one of those Hamilton‘s you mentioned going for dirt cheap… I put in a low bid in the high 300s and was barely beat at just $400. It went from $1200-$1500 (I don’t really remember what the full price was) to $400. What a markdown.

Not a money grab. The noise about the foolishness of cost is bringing them attention. The fact that we're discussing whether we should buy this or a Patek means they've achieved the goal. It was never about the money, it was about the hype. Otherwise, I agree, its a very nice few hundred dollar watch.

As long as an ordinary timepiece, from a now fashionable brand, starts from 10,000 $ straight off the shelf, how can you say that a totally special model, in limited edition and specially designed, is expensive at the same cost ? Just because it says Citizen on the dial, instead of something else? But, "The grapes are sour" when you can't reach them!
@PocketWatchTime9 ай бұрын
Watch my previous video on expensive watches. No hypocrisy here. I call out all the big brands for being way too expensive as well. I understand limited additions too. That’s mostly what I collect. I own the platinum first edition Credor Spring Drive (only 100 made)… It cost far less than $10k. This pocket watch’s price is just not in the stratosphere of normal pricing for a pocket watch.
@r100curtaincall9 ай бұрын
Other than taking into account how highly regarded citizen is in Japan, especially when comparing the watch to other watches the pricing indeed seems insane. But I do think from a production standpoint the fact that they’re making so few of them heavily leans into the cost. It’s very expensive to develop a new movement and when you’re going to be producing only 100 of them, economies of scale doesn't really help much. The other problem with a watch like this that’s limited to only 100 pieces, is that servicing becomes a nightmare. If you ever need parts, you’re pretty much up the creek. This sounds like a money grab that’s aimed at a very exclusive small number of people, to which money is no object. I would definitely want one, but there’s no way I’m paying $9000 for one. It just makes no sense.
@PocketWatchTime9 ай бұрын

100% agree with you that the watch is awesome but the limited availability (100 pieces who is that for citizen executives only club?) plus the price makes this stupid. I have no problem with limited edition but make it 500-1000 and price it decently for gods sake.

Yeah one of my pet peeves is with limited edition watch releases. This causes some people to rush out buy it, then flip it on eBay. I was assuming the watch would be around $1500-$2500. But didn’t know they were going to make only 100 pocket watches. Like you say, there are older pocket watches at much cheaper price. I’m a fan of Trains and pocket watches, can buy a Ball pocket watch around $600. At $9000 I would get a luxury watch for my wrist… after I win the lottery. 😊

Hi! I learned your channel through sanjays channel. I don't know much about pocket watches, but your example of minute repeater pocket watches was shocking! I've been a fan of citizen and when they introduced the 0200 with free sprung balance and attention to accuracy, unlike the GS free sprung high beet, I was actually feeling they umderpriced the watch. The 0210 with date increased the price to 8,000 usd, and I still felt the price was far lower than fair. I did see all youtubers criticizing the price for a citizen, but learning about the alloys used for the mainspring, and alsothe balance spring, and just how precisely each watch is made, it to me is well worth it. The bracelet by the way is so well made, it kinda gives you all that you would have hoped what high end watches lacked, elegance with solidity. With all that said, I did turn down this pocket watch for the price. Not because I thought it was ovepriced, but in hope that they release this movement in a wrist watch. By the way, La-joux Perret only made the base plates for the 0200 and 0210. All the gears and such were made by citizen.
@PocketWatchTime4 ай бұрын
Hi there. I remember the days of Sanjay’s stream. I was unpopular… They booted me out. 🤣 As for pricing… I think all luxury watches are way overpriced. So, I’m not knocking Citizen for pushing up market and pricing their watches in that stratosphere. I’m just knocking the relative cost of this pocket watch toward far more luxurious pocket watches. Pocket watches really are a niche category where you can buy so much watch for considerably less money than a wristwatch. I’ve got my eye on a seriously cool Citizen with the 0200 movement. Maybe I’ll find it for the price I like and I’ll snatch it up. I do love the Citizen brand.

So funny you mentioned it… I just bid on one of those Hamilton watch recreations in a Japan auction. I put in a low bid and the winner was actually just one bit above mine - Sold for $420. I guess the resale market for these types of watches isn’t very high.

@@PocketWatchTime A $500-600 msrp is fair for that watch when it was new. That’s what a Tissot sold for then. Now the base Lepine model is $800. Thanks to this wonderful inflation we are enjoying. The Swiss Hamilton should have done better than what they offered. Same with Ball. Especially with what they do with the wrist watches. Citizen could and should do better as well. The watches are a show piece of the precision, and capability of the machines Citizen makes. I guess it doesn’t really matter too much to me. All I collect is the American made watches. I wear the new watches to death. Like I said before looking the Apple pocket watch it is what I think I’ll be going with from now on, even though I guess some of the new tech is lost with the pocket watch case.
