What a joke it was/is. There are very few punk bands that are more "right wing" for lack of a better term. Out of the 30k+ songs in my iTunes library, I'd say only some Oi and the Anti-Heros could be considered conservative or trad. I think 4 Chan kind of demonstrates this perfectly. Because the main culture keeps banning all who disagree, the real counterculture (the ones against the popular culture) were forced to go to the one website that doesn't ban you for your ideologies. They've been pumping out memes ever since that simply offend the the majority of people and have been enjoying said memes entirely because people are offended by them. The real countercultures will always be the ones everyone gets offended by, and right now, that's the right. edit: wow, that is one flame war bellow

There are a variety of reasons, likely, but probably it's primarily two. 1) We have more and more people coming of age who never grew up with communism. Not as in, never grew up under communist regimes, but as in, never grew up in fear of communism. It was an accepted fact during the Cold War that the world was politically bipolar; there was no guarantee that democracy would win, and so more of the uppity, hedonistic types in the west understood that if communism won, it would be worse for them. Not all of them understood this, but more of them did. They might still have been left of center but they understood the need to keep what Leftism meant in the west different from what it meant elsewhere. After communism failed, the ideology of the First World took over most of the world. So when there are not really any communist governments left that are on the offensive against freedom outside their borders (or at least, weren't until recently), rebellious people feel suspicious only of the US government, culture, business, etc, because those are the only power-mongers left who can really affect global political culture anymore. Meanwhile, many have come to sympathize with communism for the same reason that people sympathize with the Native Americans and Confederate States; when they build up a resentment of the USA then they can't help but wonder if the some of the things the USA defeated and essentially destroyed had merit. 2) Punk may not be innately left-wing, but it's hard to deny that it wants, on some level, to change things. Part of the reason that recently one man's punk can be called another man's (or maybe, woman's) fascist is that historically fascists DID want to change things for what they saw as the better. They rallied against the prior governments in the countries they took over, out of the notion that those governments were failing their people. Of course, the exact same is true of communism, and that gives you the answer to why many punks like communism. Above all else, punks want to make an impact; they want their brashness to affect things. If people can just ignore them, there's no point to being punks. They desire to feel like they're doing something valuable as opposed to just wasting time and disturbing the peace. Thus it's possible that from a pure punk standpoint, no change is bad change. What makes a figure like Che Guevara a hero to many punks and the like is that he's that fantasy made real. He's an example of a man driven by seething anger from a young age, who made drastic changes to the countries whose governments he overthrew. Measurably bad ones, even by exclusively leftist standards, but to anyone who's a punk first and a Marxist second, if at all really, arguably all that matters is he made a change. He fought people who stood for what had been, and he beat them. Often lethally. Incidentally, right-wing punks are also not new. Hell's Angels can be cited as an American example, while in Britain, the skinhead movement actually began as a fairly unfocused punk scene before it attracted so many white nationalists that the two became inseparable afterwards; especially to speakers outside of Britain. More recently, Neo-Nazis in Germany have also been retooling their image from a punk one to a hipster one, earning themselves the portmanteau label, nipsters. Something I also think should be said here is that, right-wing or left-wing, conservative or progressive, what people would label punks are more driven by youthful emotion than by patient nuance and philosophy; more driven by ire at what is than by any concrete vision of what ought to be. I've read that one of the problems with the label "conservative" is that it arguably has no objective meaning of its own and instead can only inherit meaning from a country's current status quo, which doesn't allow for calling the likes of Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher conservatives, as both took power in countries that had been run by further left governments, and changed them drastically. In fact, they changed the WORLD drastically. But be this as it may, few would ever call Reagan and Thatcher punks, because despite causing massive changes, they were overwhelmingly POLITICIANS. They affected changes by putting on business suits, going to debates, learning to speak across the aisle and convincing the unconvinced. Reagan's platform was overwhelmingly built on his opposition to communism, but he was still friendly with the Soviet leader. Meanwhile, with punks, I think a big consistency is their opposition to the sort of polite, stylish behavior that characterizes politics. It looks to them like a phony ritual when people representing a whole slew of ideologies and countries start dressing and talking in the same way, it makes it harder for many people who aren't part of that culture to see themselves in politicians, with or without a common ideology, and they see that ritual as too intolerably inefficient to affect whatever changes they want. And incidentally, that's still more or less true of these old punks who now go up to bat for the majority of US government policies. They see Biden as their ally, but they don't likely see Biden as one of them. He's a suit, and they're not. Even if the punk look has been appropriated by major fashion labels, it's still not the formal look.

Spot on! Loved punk when I was younger, mostly because of the focus on individualism, rebellion against establishment and anti-authoritharian vibe. Sadly 99% of the bands I used to like have now become avatars of corporate shills. Most younger people I see now that "love" punk have absolutely no idea of what it is, and what used to be an expression of individualism(hair, clothes, not conforming) is now as common place as the "stepford wives" look was in the 50's. So in the words of one of the few actual punk rockers left: “People don’t understand, because everything’s so cancel-culture, woke bullshit nowadays, but you could never have the punk explosion nowadays, because of cancel culture and woke bullshit,” he added. “You could never have it. It would never have happened. We’re lucky it happened when it did, because it’ll never happen again. You won’t have any of those kinds of bands ever again. Everyone’s so uptight and P.C., it’s just like, ‘OK, whatever.'” Glenn Danzig, Misfits
