This is great. As a mom of 8, I've watched this exact system play out in my children acquiring their first language over and over again. My current 2-year-old is playing conversation games all day!

Another amazing thing about melody is that a lot of information gets communticated. It's super common for our ears to not hear a word, but in our native language the melody often fills in the right word. Comedians use this all the time when they say a sentence with the melody that creates an expectation of ending on a certain word, but then switch to a different word. It's funny because everyone knew what the word "should have been" based only on the melody.

How does vocabulary grow in auditory methods like this one? I noticed that the biggest vocabulary gains happen when a learner reads a lot. Is there any practice that can be as effective when a learner delays reading?

I'm no expert, but my first thought is high quality audiobooks.

My understanding is that this process essentially makes it so that listening and reading are more equitable processes from the learner perspective. By that I mean, it's "easier" to pick up vocabulary when reading because a learner has the mental and cognitive tools to parse through written language more clearly, but there is very little attention paid to the auditory components of language, which means those mental and cognitive tools are lacking. This process seeks to provide those tools so that you can actually pick up vocabulary not simply by reading a word in different contexts, but by hearing it in different contexts, as well. Ultimately, though, I think it is also going to be a learner-focused thing. If a learner feels more comfortable learning new words in their own language through reading, that likely will not be different in another language. In many situations, though, many types of context can only be shared through audiovisual interactions, such as tone, body language, etc. (I haven't taken a full mimic method course, but I've studied different approaches to language learning and use many of them in my own company, so what he is referring to sounds familiar enough to me to feel like I understand the gist of the approach, though I may be off in some areas.)

@@devinoverman7497 if it is indeed the case, it's like a superpower. I can listen for 5-6 hours of podcasts a day, but get tired of reading. Increasing the ability of picking up vocab from listening would've been awesome
