I pretty much agree with you. Imo, without the safety patrol stuff and everything, it just feels underwhelming. Also, I think the animation looks a bit cheaper than it should. You can put outlines on CG characters now lol. I think that would look better. It doesn’t look too bad but it does remind me of the CGI Arthur movie. Fregley has always looked weird in CGI. They used CGI for the animated bits in the original films and you can see that Fregley looks off, even there.

Honestly this movie should have just been a tv show. The pacing makes it feel like just one really long episode of a cartoon. If they had split up the events of the first book in to maybe like 6 20 minute episodes, it would solve a lot of problems. Also the book = 1 season formula could work really well

I personally thought the movie itself was really good, but I wish it picked up where the live actions left off instead of starting from the beginning for the millionth time. It wasn't even an hour, they could've fit a few books in there and make it longer But overall, I did enjoy it and is something I can easily have on in the background while working on comics

Excellent review. “So, you wanna come over after school and play?” alone can’t carry the movie. There needs to be a buildup of events in the plot that makes the climax worth it, as well as a character who has clear motivations and aspirations. In the original movie, Greg wanted to be popular and did anything, including treating his best friend like crap, to make that happen. Its ending perfectly illustrates Greg learning the lesson that popularity really doesn't mean anything and that having good friends + accepting them for who they are is really what counts. Unfortunately, in this movie, Greg had nothing to learn and nor were any of the characters given traits that made its final scene as impactful as it should have been. As you said, they shouldn't even have broken up as friends to begin with. I also found the manner in which Rowley read "Zoo-Wee Mama" to be horrendous.

The Movie was OK for someone who knows the wimpy kid story. But, it is really missing out a lot if you see it from general audiences. The character of Greg was good, I'd say. I like how they tried NOT to make Greg a Sociopath for once. Rowley felt good, I liked Fregley and Manny. The Plot points were basically that- Rowley is not mature enough for middle school, They have Halloween, Rowley and Greg hate each other cause like Greg gave rowley a comic idea and got his hand fractured and Rowley got Famous, Then the teens from halloween come back to get *revenge* then they are friends. It lacks a lot, The Safety Patrol would add a good reason for them to not be friends, for Greg and Rowley to be more explored, and it overall should have 10-20 minutes more.

I actually found myself enjoying the movie. It’s not meant to be a reboot of the original movie, far from it. It’s made to be more true to the real story of the book. And while there are some inconsistencies, it does a very good job at that. And that’s also the reason why it’s only 50 minutes long.
