I have two theory’s. One is that Rowley was really excited for Halloween even if it wasn’t October so he wrote this book in preparation or that rowley watched a scary movie with Greg and got the idea to write his own spooky story

the end of story 2 is actually pretty dark. the townspeople say that it was just a joke, and that HE'S not dead, EVERYONE is, and that a meteor hit the town the night before. then the main character goes up to try to fly, jumping of the light house, only realizing that NOBODY was dead in the first place, meaning he couldn't fly, and that he would soon fall to his demise on the light house
