It's so weird that Disney is avoiding live action things and Nick is obsessed with making everything live action- they even made the Loud house live action for some reason and it ruined the whole comic book aesthetic it had. Nick's new actors look way older though, there's no more 8 year olds or anything.

I feel like Disney Channel changed after sitcoms like Walk the Prank, Best Friends Whenever, Stuck in the Middle, Andi Mack and Raven's Home came out and since then, there haven't been as much sitcoms that came out. I haven’t watched Disney channel in probably a decade now, so it’s interesting to hear that they don’t really air live action shows and instead it’s almost all cartoons. Back in my hey-day it was almost the opposite. You had younger kids programming in the morning (Playhouse Disney), then live action shows during the afternoon and evening. A newer or seasonally relevant movie (usually DCOM). Then later at night you would get an older DCOM and all of the cartoons until it was morning again and the younger kids programming started again.

I watched a youtube documentary about the history of Disney channel, it pretty much boiled down to this: Disney channel is going to change to fit what the audience is going to watch. My guess is that almost exclusively animated shows are less expensive to produce plus streaming has drawn away the target demographic from the 2000's and 2010's. I doubt it has much of anything to do with any ethical consideration to the young stars.
@astroblast2325
@astroblast2325 Жыл бұрын
For sure. It's also likely older kids/young adults who live action shows are geared towards can go online and stream these sitcoms, meanwhile young children who are most likely to be drawn toward animated work would have access to TV and less likely to utilize streaming without parental help

If you think Disney Channel was better when you were younger, you should've seen it when it was known as THE Disney Channel. Welcome to Pooh Corner, Dumbo's Circus, the new Mickey Mouse Club, Kids Incorporated, The Wonderful World of Disney, Wuzzles, Gummi Bears, various theatrical shorts... Good times. These days most of the shows aren't geared towards me (an old), but I tune in weekly for Miraculous and now Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, and formerly The Owl House and Amphibia. its odd since disney channel does have a lot of live action shows that are currently running, but they choose to play animated shows like big city greens and miraculous over and over again. i would think that their audience would prefer the live action shows, so I am surprised why they don't choose to play current live-action shows like villains of valley view and secrets of sulphur springs that their audience would probably like. i know they choose to add seasons to the animated shows and not the live action ones so it just might be the production value that disney channel is able to afford now.

The difference of program phasing is really interesting! You mentioned how you remember mostly sitcoms and were surprised by how much cartoons they played. I grew up in the 90's and for me it was the opposite. We had Ducktales, Winnie the Pooh, Chip and Dale, Timon and Pumba, House of Mouse, etc. Then in the early 00's it introduced its first big sitcoms like Lizzie McGuire, Even Stevens, and That's so Raven, but was mostly still cartoons, like Kim Possible, and Recess. There were also distinct time difference between Disney Junior and Disney, because it was just one channel at the time. Even the live action shows meant for young kids, didn't really follow the sitcom formula, like Out Of The Box, Bear In The Big Blue House, or The Wiggles. By the time Zack and Cody and Hannah Montana came out, I felt a bit too old to be watching. I was college age when Jessie and Austin and Ally were made, but I had some friends and younger family members who watched, otherwise I don't have much of an idea about That era of Disney.

I don't think the shows are bad, but the channel itself is bad. The schedule does change, but the weekend slot is slightly better than the weekday. They've played older shows at night since forever. About a decade ago, they'd make a special about it too calling it "Throwback Thursday" but only between 1AM and 5AM. The Disney Channel has just become far less structured and far less fun between commercial breaks. They also don't promote new things well. Just today I found out the air date for the finale of The Owl House. I'm still waiting to know when season 2 of The Villains of Valley View will premiere.

What’s funny (and kinda sad) is that cable’s really only dead for our generation and younger. Cuz I still watch cable with my parents. It’s nice having our shows to watch once a week. But with streaming services and…parents probably wanting to distract their children when they’re being crazy….cable isn’t convenient. Which explains Disney Channel, since kids would have to be watching it for them to put the effort into it.

So I had a look at the Disney Channel US channel guide to see if the schedule was any different during the weekdays, and yeah, it's mostly the same as you described here: majority of the timeslots during the day are taken up by the same 3-4 animated shows, and the live-action stuff is relegated to the evening and early hours of the morning. The only notable differences are that the early morning has preschool shows playing, and the live-action shows are aired much earlier in the evening. My take on this is that since most of their audience is streaming stuff on Disney+ now, Disney Channel doesn't really put as much care into their programming schedules as they used to, because they know there probably aren't many people tuning in anyway. So they can get away with doing more reruns and marathons. It's very unfortunate for those who can't get Disney+ for whatever reason (can't afford it, bad internet, etc) as they don't get much variety in content to watch, and if they're most interested in the live-action stuff like you are... yeah, it's tough. I'm surprised you guys even still have Disney Channel at all; I live in Australia and our feed was shut down a few years ago because it lost so much of its audience to streaming. I'm not sure how long the US version will keep going for, so... enjoy it while it lasts I guess? Even if it's not as good as it used to be?

As someone who grew up watching the Disney channel before live action shows took off, it was really weird hearing someone who grew up with them talk about Disney's "descent in to animated shows". Modern Disney Channel does have a few live-action shows, but hardly any of them are sitcoms. The only really notable new one is Secrets of Sulphur Springs, which is like a paranormal mystery show, but that only plays once a week. Disney Channel only makes a few new live action shows (and only airs them once a week), but they also don’t show enough reruns.

Well with animated shows it does provide lot of jobs to artist or upcoming artists like me. I do like watching animated shows like gravity falls, amphibia and owl house. There was not lot of animated shows with a good plot line, so happy that Disney actually showing shows like that. Also happy with new representation going into owl house. I think mix of both is good animated and acting.

Basically yeah, Disney was forced to stop production for Live Action show for a while, also at the time XD was getting basically nuked so starting from 2019 on they moved all cartoons to Disney Channel almost exclusively. Not to mention that one of the new live action shows is made by the same people behind Lab Rats so….yeah. Top that with the dying of TV and the Disney Channel/Disney+ collab, not to mention Disney Jr. Taking up a slot but not really called that anymore and a similar thing happing with them and you’ve a new era of Disney Channel.

For the weekday schedule, if what TV Passport says is true the ratio of animation to Live Action is worse 6am-2pm Disney Junior (basically just like 1-3 half hours of Bluey with other shows sprinkled in until 11am where it's 3 straight hours of Bluey) Afterwards it's an hour of Big City Greens, an hour of Miraculous, an hour of Big City, then an episode of Kiff (a cartoon they debuted a few weeks ago I watched one episode last week and it was fine enough) After this we get a random airing of Phineas and Ferb, and an episode of Hamster and Gretal right after, we then get another episode of Kiff, an hour of Big City, and the only hour of live action programming of the entire day an hour of Jesse. After this it's just 2 hours of cartoons (one episode of Hamster, Big City, Moon Girl (another new cartoon they started airing), and Miraculous), then 2 hours of Bluey at 11 pm, an hour of Miraculous, 2 of Big City, 1 last hour of Miraculous, and then Sofia The First, and ending at 5:30am another half hour of Bluey.

I honestly agree with you because animation stuff in Disney junior and Disney channel are kinda boring to me some good and enjoyable but boring because it doesn’t have live action shows and shows like bluey and big city greens which there good but it’s a problem using it a lot like either span of 2 or 3 hours I was like I’m bored and use different shows instead watching this every day constantly so for people to watch content not watching the same show every day for 3 hours like I really want this to be fixed for Disney channel it’s 40th anniversary/ Birthday and so far it’s been shit this year

I’m enjoying ravens home, Saturdays, and villains of valley view, but I think Secrets of sulphur springs is the best out of the recent live action Disney Channel shows. Disney channel has changed a lot since its inception in the 80s. Back when it started it was really a family channel. It showed shows for all different ages/demographics, from kids shows and cartoons, to dramas geared towards adults, etc. This actually continued on throughout the 90s as well, but with a lot more original cartoons and even some tween show experimentations here and there. It wasn't really until the early 2000s where the channel really transformed into a full on kids/tween channel and started becoming more like Nickelodeon. The Disney Channel now though seems to be reverting back to more like what it was in the 90s, minus the adult shows, where it was mostly cartoons.

The last time I had cable was in 2020, when the owl house started and Amphibia was ongoing. I've stopped watching the sitcoms and almost exclusively watch animated shows now (except for one of my partners favorite shows, brooklyn nine-nine). It sounds like you were definitely watching the weekend animation block, but it makes me pretty sad that I didn't hear about any of the shows I loved playing. The Owl House, Amphibia, SVTFOE despite its bad ending, Gravity Falls, Phineas and Ferb, Austin and Ally, Liv and Maddie, Stuck in The Middle, etc. I also remember shows like Sydney to The Max, Gabby Duran and the Unsittables, and Coop and Cami Ask The World, but I never cared for them. I have seen The Ghost and Molly Mcgee on disney+, and it can be pretty fun, but it doesn't make me feel as many things as other animated shows I've watched. I forgot disney channel always aired a lot of reruns of the same episodes ober and over. I can't say much for Miraculous because I haven't seen seasons 4 or 5 because they won't show up on netflix.

Personally I really love Disney Channel right now! I’ve been keeping up with quite a few of the cartoons on there in the past few years and I’m really happy they have a big focus on animation now! I grew up with a lot of live action shows on there as well such as Suite Life (both the original series and On Deck), Wizards of Waverly Place, Hannah Montana, and Sonny With a Chance, but I can definitely understand why there would be a lack of those types of shows now judging by the reasons that were mentioned. I think my favorite era of Disney Channel is in the late 2000’s (AKA The Ribbon Era), and I grew up with it in the early 2010’s as well! The two big Disney Channel cartoons I grew up with are Phineas and Ferb and Gravity Falls, those shows mean so so much to me!!!

People used to complain about how live action was treated better than animation and now they've kind of turned the problem on its head. It's great they push animation further but the live action output has suffered as far as numbers. There is an attempt at more variety in what the live action shows are beyond sitcoms which is good but some get screwed over and there isn't quite enough for live action stuff compared to animation. I'm pretty plugged into what is going on so it's fun when I see people who aren't aware. Outside of what is covered in this video, they came out with Saturdays which is a sitcom, but a single camera one. They have Secrets of Sulpur Springs which is a mystery show that only airs when there's a new season it seems. I feel like Bunk';d is pushed too much, as well as Raven's Home, much like Nick does with SpongeBob. Streaming is the big thing now so Disney puts everything there, with some crossover attempts to get new subs. It's a shame but that's the reality of it. Most kids watching Villains likely watch it on Disney+ I bet lol.

I know this is a month late, but as an avid watcher of Disney channel on cable, there are some good shows. Secret of Sulphur Springs is great but not on that often. Also Saturdays, and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, and newly added Kiff, are good as well. And I liked Big City Greens, but it’s on all the time and I’ve seen most of the episodes by now and I don’t like it as much. It just kept getting weirder and weirder every season. But I still like watching Disney Channel even if what’s on now isn’t as good as 5-10 years ago.

The pros and cons of this NEW Disney Channel are, for the pros, they’re giving animation the spotlight, and green lighting a lot of fun animated shows such as Big City Greens, The Ghost and Molly McGee, Hamster & Gretel, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Kiff, and the newest animated show Hailey’s On It, which premieres on June 8 at 8pm/7pm on Disney Channel. Another pro is that at least with all these animated shows, there’s some variety, obviously they air more reruns of Big City Greens, just because it’s the longest running animated show right now with 3 seasons and 80 total episodes. However, one of the cons is that with not a lot of live action sitcoms, there’s not a lot of variety. The schedule now is mostly Big City Greens, and Miraculous, with touches of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, The Ghost and Molly McGee, Kiff, and Hamster & Gretel. However, I remember the old schedule was always a live action sitcom, and I remember Thursday nights, they had a thing called Disney Replay where they would air shows like That’s So Raven, Wizards of Waverly Place, Hannah Montana, Cory in the House, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, The Suite Life on Deck, etc. Now, it’s just animation. Another con is that with the few live action sitcoms that still air on Disney Channel, they air them few and far between. We don’t even see as many reruns of The Villains of Valley View, and both Bunk’d and Raven’s Home have 6 seasons, Bunk’d is about to have a season 7, and yet, we don’t see any reruns from previous seasons. So yes, this Disney Channel is weird, but at the same time, it’s actually pretty good. At least it’s not Cartoon Network just airing Teen Titans Go!, or like Nickelodeon just airing SpongeBob SquarePants.

Cartoon Network has the same issue as Disney, not talking about live action series. They do the "netflix" move which makes you "overdose" on your favourite shows. 3-4 or even more episodes of the same show kill the channel at least for me. If I look at the TV guide they have 4-5 shows that continue to be broadcasted all day. "Back in my days" if you wanted another episode of Xiaolin Showdown or Teen Titans or Witch or Power Rangers you had to wait until next day to see it.

I don't think that the switch over from live action to animated shows was an ethical decision honestly. Disney is absolutely still making new live action shows staring young actors. Villains of Valley View is one example, but there is also Doogie Kamealoha, It's All Right, etc. Also, they're still making plenty of live action original movies (Chang can Dunk, Prom Pact, Disenchanted). These are all fairly recent releases on Disney Plus and there are many more, so it definitely doesn't seem that Disney has decided to steer away from child stars. My best theory for why these live action shows and movies are widely available on Disney Plus but hardly played on the Disney channel is that the live action stuff is geared more towards slightly older kids who are more likely to use a streaming platform than cable. In fact, some of Disney's more recent live action releases are kind of mature for Disney, to the extent that you might not even realize that they're Disney. The Prom Pact, for instance, deals with some themes that are odd for a younger audience, like applying to college. The same movie also includes scenes of underage drinking and partying. The animated shows that do play on the channel during the day now seem to be very "safe" options to have turned on in the background, especially for parents with younger children.

I enjoyed your video, Amanda! I just stumbled into you while surfing through my home selections. You have a point. But, to be fair, you should probably check out the schedule on a weekday. Of course, the season for most on-air shows is about over as it usually runs September through February, more or less. Disney had several live-action shows running just a couple of years ago like "Gabby Duran and The Unsittables" which only lasted two seasons. Then there was "Sydney to The Max" which went three seasons as I recall. Both of these were gone at the end of the 2020-2021 season (I think). Of course the reason there are now mostly animated shows on Disney Channel -- the cable version -- is cost. It's expensive to run a live-action production and the pandemic didn't do them any favors either. Now, with the domination of streaming services, you can dial up just about any show you want, any time you want to see it. I'm currently starting to binge season 4 of "Kim Possible". By the way, Christy Carlson Romano has an amazing channel on KZbin, you should check her out. Great job, Amanda! I'm subscribing to see what you come up with next.
