Absolutely fantastic video. Hi Tom, the music for the 12th Doctor titles, was only finished a week or so before TX. Everyone was working to the original Eccleston theme. I often get asked about the audio sync issues, but I had no involvement in the build for the sequence, sadly. Just the concept. Members of the BBC Wales graphics team work for Realtime now btw!

Damn did not expect this comment in the slightest, absolutely love your work(and sync issues/my personal opinions on the music aside I do love the Capaldi titles, great work on that)! Wild how tight to release the deadlines on these major bits of branding are. I know the 1st Smith titles were only done in the 3 or so weeks before broadcast or something like that. With the temping of the Eccleston theme I’m reminded of the leaked copy of Rose using the Baker theme. Interesting to know they’re still temping into the more modern eras.

It's so weird how they just can't get it right. The problem was even present in the first RTD title sequence. The sound effect when the TARDIS gets close to the camera is mistimed in every episode after Rose until they just removed it after Series 3.
@Bread_LM3 ай бұрын
To be fair, there are a lot of things that factor into it. It's all because of the intro stinger - if the intro of an episode has an audio stinger, the intro itself has to be split into audio and video to account for the audio overlapping with the live action footage. The editors are only given maybe 2-3 variations of the intro theme that has audio stings of different length, and the director has to choose where the best spot to start the stinger is and which length to go with, and then hope the footage aligns correctly. It's a weird system, I totally get why it happens, but I wish they'd figure out a way for it to stop being unsynced.

My favourite thing about Jodie's era was her title sequence. Although, I feel like her titles would have been better suited with the darker tone of the Capaldi era.
@dratheart13 күн бұрын
My favorite part of Jodie's era was when The Master (having stopped by the BBC Merch shop & e-bay to get all the Doctor's clothes he could) SHOT HER D-D-DEAD! I was excited, before I saw her in the role, that she was to play the lead; I really liked the idea of a female Doctor. Imagine how much better Jo Martin could have done it? Normally I'd say I wonder if she had auditioned but as I understand it, the BBC wanted Chibnall and he would only do it if Jodie was The Doctor and she would only stay as long as he was show-runner. It hurts all the more that the fan response to Jo Martin was so largely positive. I feel so bad for her as an actress to be IN THE SCRIPT for Jodie's final episode, and thus get to read before anybody that The Doctor would regenerate back into Tennant. Why? Because if an old regeneration could show up it means there was another chance to consider her and they again slapped her across the face and said "NO!" I really hope Disney doesn't renew for Season 3 and the show either dies or is revived by the BBC with RTD *GONE*. And I hope it happens before the "Joy Ate The World" Christmas Special.

Another thing that annoys me is that the Gatwa era now has this awkwardly extended ending to the theme music to accomodate for the fact that the logo is shown where the episode title used to be pre-Space Babies. It just feels wrong, since it just feels like they jammed 2 bars from a random point in the theme in there to bridge the gap between the ending of the main melody and the dramatic ending of the sequence

Whatever people may think about the 13th doctor era, the time vortex was probably one of the best as it felt organic yet cosmic, as if the very fabric of time itself is alive which makes sense since it turns out that time is a living thing(we learn this in the vanquishers). Also, as you somewhat mentioned near the end, it’d be cool if the whoniverse bit was combined with the intro. They could have the camera looking at the whoniverse thing like it usually does then we see the tardis appear then quickly move across the screen into the time vortex bit we see at the start of the intro with the camera quickly following the tardis

I'm wondering if that missing shot is also part of the reason for the PNG logo. The missing shot would mean the logo came in too early, and the regeneration effects wouldn't be long enough to cover the remainder of the sequence, so while they fixed the timing on that, they used the PNG logo with a PowerPoint animation as a placeholder that ended up being in the final product.

i feel like the shot of Doctor and companion hanging out of the Tardis would have gone between the nebula shot and the logo appearance- the string and wind flourishes accompany the Tardis movement across the cast names so perfectly during bars 5-8 I can't imagine it interrupting that- I think the new nebula shot with all the planets is slightly extended to allow for the lack of the Tardis team shot
@ComedicRick6 ай бұрын

That "Whoniverse" logo is not a thing in the Disney+ versions. We get a normal BBC logo animation upfront as part of the video stream, and the BBC letter over the Doctor Who logo as you described. No Disney+ logo upfront either, but an animated Disney logo (not Disney+) after the end credits.

Beautiful video! I'm baffled by the clash between a bright blue logo and the purple/orange vortex - especially when we've seen a blue vortex in EoD. They even gave the png a slight pink tint so it wouldn't look too out of place. I presumed the 'final' logo would emerge from the abstract blue shape behind the names with all the lines leading in. So many bizarre decisions.
@SuperCrazyfin6 ай бұрын
Man this video was made for me. You addressed pretty much all my issues with the intro. One thing I will mention that's kind of a nitpicky thing is that the way the text moves feels weird for Ncuti's sequences. During the 14th Doctor specials Tennant's text moves smoothly towards the screen but Ncuti's seems like it suddenly jerks forward halfway through. Similarly the letters in Mille's text moves a lot more than Catherine's did to accomodate the Tardis and that isnt necessarily a worse decision I think it makes it look more awkward. Edit: You say that if people didn't notice the Twelth Doctor's titles being out of sync it might be because the music makes it hard to know where the textual elements should land musically but I honestly think the opposite, i think it's easier to notice than previous instances of the Doctor Who intro being out of sync because there are so many instances of textual elements lining up with the music compared to the other intros, at least twice as many as the 2005-2010 intro. It could entirely be me being super focused on that stuff though but the fact that there are so many visual reference points for the music makes it hurt even more when the intro was out of sync. Edit 2(Apologies): Also I'm surprised you didnt at least give at least a passing mention to the extension they made to the end of the intro music for the Season 1 titles.

Thank you for taking the time to tell me things about the logo I hadn't known I needed to realise! I am very much a viewer who jumps into the stream and enjoys being hurled downriver, to enjoy the white water ride, without thinking critically about graphics and plot holes, possibly because I am a graphic artist and subconsciously tune out, as my brain's 'not at work' then. Which is why your analytically dispassionate dissection of the title sequence was a revelation. As you say, it would take so little to pick up the quality, so let's hope they have a further go at tweaking it for the Christmas special and season two.

Also, earlier coincidently, just for fun and being a bit silly, I did the same experiment, pairing up a McCoy/Smith remix of the combined theme tunes to one of classic Sailor Moon's title Sequences, which also worked as well, which was so epic and it was so funny, as the music really matched with it.

Thank you so much for making this video. Hopefully things like this get noticed more often. I agree, the new version is definitely a major improvement, but there’s still work to be done. While I do much prefer the shot they have now in place of the snap zoom (sorry, I was one of those people😬), I think they really fumbled it as it comes off looking like two different artists or groups of artists worked on the different shots without notes from the others. The fact that it cuts from the closeup cloudbursting shot to the wide shot with planets is already awkward enough in my opinion-I feel like a much better way would have been to eliminate the cut altogether, making it one shot, starting with the closeup of the cloudburst, then a slow zoom out to reveal the planets, then pick back up with the slow zoom in as the TARDIS enters the vortex-but what makes it much worse is that it looks like two COMPLETELY different shots. By the time the cloudbursting shot is over, it looks like most of the clouds have dissipated, but then we cut to the new shot, and there are still plenty of clouds trailing the TARDIS. Just kinda awkward. However, I think my least favorite aspect of the intro now is the very beginning. The spin of the TARDIS looks very awkward in my opinion. I’m not quite sure how to explain it properly, but the movement looks way too quick and unnatural. It spins, then lingers in the exact same spot, and the vortex also looks weird as the perspective lingers way too far to the right of the screen. My eyes don’t feel like we’re moving *through* the vortex, so much as it feels like the clouds of the vortex are *emanating* from that spot on the screen. Not sure how else to explain it. Just looks strange. I think the animators could’ve benefitted greatly from studying the TARDIS movement in the series 5-6 intro. I don’t know who or what team worked on that intro, but they should be applauded, because the movement of the TARDIS has never looked more natural than it did there IMO. Anyways, sorry for the ramble. Just some of my further thoughts. Thank you so much for the video! Really helped me understand a lot of what seemed off or awkward about this intro.

I mostly liked the title sequence. For the 60th anniversery specials, the logo also would have worked better, when it used more references to the classic openings, like zooming the logo to give the background the shape of it. Or by using with the "WHO-Zoom" the same effect as the 80s titles. For the "fixed" titles it just annoyes me the ending with another "ooweeooo" for it sounds so weird, it would have worked with using an echo effect like in 70s. And also there had been so many opportunities to give the background the shape of the doctor.

I think the one thing this logo did a bit too much was cutting between shots. Most Title Sequences for Doctor Who Had Flow with Either the camera turning along side objects like the logo, meteorites, Etc. Or was The Nice CG and visual abstract shapes that Faded between Each other like in the Original 1-3 Era's OR 13's Era It stayed at one cut that flowed between shots. This Sequence: Starts with the TARDIS Looping around CUT Now the TARDIS Scrapping alongside the Vortex CUT Now The TARIDS on the Right side of the screen to Left Side just like The TARDIS took a 90° Turn Now does a 180° and goes From the Left to the Right in the same spot NOW THE TARDIS IS ON ITS SIDE going forward like it looped around CUT Now The Tardis is back Upright but Bursting out of a nebula into another vortex CUT (The anniversary series) Finishes with TITLE and Episode 3 cuts with no flow between them. The most Technical Cuts were in the 1-3 era's but what they did was Fade them together. NEW WHO never did that EVEN 11's SECOND TITLE SEQUENCE. There was never a cut between shots there was always a transition or a flow into the next! EDIT: What I mean is the Camera either panned along side Objects, or the transition either cut with a face of the Doctor (Example being the 4th), Used effects to cut between scenes like spark Effects (11's Second One). Or Like the NEW WHO ERA The Camera Follows the TARDIS between shots.

Looking at many of these comments it is clear that the people who don't seem to appreciate the new sequence very much are those people who have a technical understanding and appreciation for how these things are created. I do not. I just know the newest one gives me goosebumps and makes me excited for what is to come. You can't make everyone happy, a good change for one is a huge mistake for another.

This was so fascinating start to finish! I do hope we see an in sync change for next season. Weirdly the budget must have increased compared to Chibnall’s era yet Jodie’s titles look more elegant and high in quality.

Also I know this isn’t so related and it’s only 20 seconds but I wonder what your opinions are on the Sarah Jane Adventures theme in relation to DW and it’s music syncing with the logo/names. I think during the SJA run it’s almost exactly the same for series 1-2 (except Invasion of the Bane/Revenge of the Slitheen being variants) and series 3-5 being the same.

It's seems they've attempted to do some syncing in some of the more recent episodes?

Another strange music editing decision was looping the melody at the end of the title sequence and ending it with a nasty cross fade into the final crescendo. This is the music editor’s fault, not Murray Gold’s!

9:22 watch the intro for twin peaks the return. It's Russell opting to put more emphasis on his name than the name of the programme. A bit vain but hey he did have to come back after all.

The snap shot in the first version drove me mad, glad they at least replaced that

I definitely agree with your point about Murray's soundtrack releases (or lack thereof). I really hope that a full, extended mix of the new theme will exist outside of fan stitching, but I get the distinct feeling that won't happen. I just love the bits in the classic era sig-tunes where it does melody 1 and then hangs on the bassline for 2 (or more) bars before resolving into melody 2. I don't think any of the modern themes have had that feature outside of fan remixes. I should also point out that I do really like the diamond logo (heck, I pinched it for my channel logo as soon as the reveal of it dropped xD), but I totally agree about it not feeling at home in the title sequence. I must admit, I hadn't even really noticed the Powerpoint-esque transition during the specials until someone pointed them out to me, though I suppose that's part of the problem. The logo's prominence was so understated that I barely even noticed it!

I thought it sounded like a cool idea but then you showed the concept. That does look bad and I can definitely imagine Moffat saying _cut that._ When I first heard about it I thought it would have been the doors facing the camera.

it is impressive you managed to make a 27 minute video on a 40 second title sequence

About music releases: I‘m still waiting for original synth Series 1 and 2 soundtrack even if it is unlikely. One could hope...

Don't lose hope. I've found from experience that waiting for things patiently does eventually pay off. I talked on and off for years to the composer Dave Cooke, who produced the music for ChuckleVision amongst other shows, about his plans to release the soundtrack to the show digitally. Finally, about 8 years ago he released the first album of music on Spotify and another half a dozen albums followed, something I never thought would happen. Same with Roger Bolton, another TV composer most famous for the BBC 999 theme tune. I happened to get talking to him last year when he was in the process of going through his archive as the show's 30th anniversary was approaching. So, it's definitely possible. Perhaps not from Murray Gold himself; I do recollect from a podcast interview in which he admits his archiving habits aren't exactly the greatest and much of his music is languishing on old computers and hard drives somewhere. However, the best bet is probably the BBC themselves who probably have a complete, isolated soundtrack for each episode in their archives somewhere. The greatest hope is that they'll do something similar with the classic series DVDs where they release an isolated score to listen to when they eventually get on to releasing the new series in the Collection Blu-ray boxsets. Hopefully it's something they consider and maybe someone could put the suggestion forwards. You never know, they might use it.

Notice how every era so far has had consistent timing with the other episodes IN ITS ERA. This is a new era of doctor who so I can imagine this timing will stay for a while.

I appreciate that Moffat has enough pull to influence things like the title sequence, because not only do I no longer trust RTD, but because it means there's still someone in the production team who can and will stand up to him; what _that_ means is that there's still hope for Doctor Who, even if it's incredibly minor, and "Boom" proved that Moffat still has what it takes to write episodes that are leagues above RTD's.

23:44 - ok, as much as I appreciate that there are those that are bothered by all this and I am I no way dismissing it. RTD himself has said that the whole idea of this partner ship with disney is get younger audiences interested in doctor who... and if some like me, a 21 y/o, doesn't care about title sequence timing, I doubt a kid will. but hey, at the end of the day that's just how i see it.
